Spyder Sharpener (Colors May Vary)

I love these! I have three or four that I keep in various, convenient places for when I just need to quickly touch up an edge. Even with the relatively low grit, this and the inside of a leather belt as a strop can get a hair-popping edge back on a knife. It's really light and doesn't take up much room, so it's great for backpacking, and the rubber grips on the end make it easy to keep your fingers out of the way.

Excellent for on the go sharpening. I got this for putting in my camping bag and it's a great thing to have around even when not camping. I also have the longer lansky rod that's about 8-10 inch long and that works great for touching up blades around the house but this is excellent for putting in camping gear bag and I'm ordering another one to go in my tackle box for when I go fishing, the fishing hook sharpening grove is really handy as well. Seeing as it's an alumina ceramic type sharpener it does get clogged up pretty quick so i just rub some water on it with a rag and it's good to keep sharpening with. Oil would be better to use but seeing as I keep it with other things that oil should not get on I stick to using only water on the rag and that's fine. I'm able to get a nice clean sharp edge, this is probably equivalent to right around 700, maybe 800 grit.

Why can't the Amazon Title and Description just say "MEDIUM GRIT" like it does on the sharpener's packaging? I was looking for a FINE Grit, like most of the reviewers suggested the Lansky Spyer Sharpener was built with. I can't see trying to "fix" a dulled blade's edge with a dinky 3" sharpening surface (that requires a medium or coarse grit), but I do believe I would like to have a nice pocket-sized fine grit 3" sharpener to touch up a reasonably sharp blade to keep it nice and sharp and prevent it from becoming totally dull. Not sure yet if I'm going to keep this sharpener.

I'm actually quite happy with this. Has several different angles for different serrations and flat surfaces for plain edges. Works quite well. I have two of the cold steel ones but I like this one a bit better because it has more surface area. I actually got good results sharpening Ka-Bar serrations with it. They don't come sharp enough from the factory but this tool did the trick

It's usable surface area is about 3 inches and it's pretty good for it's portability. At it's price is great as I paid $1.25 more a few days ago..lol(why is it that everything I buy on Amazon goes down after I buy it! :)..If you're blade is dull, you'll need a sharpening stone and a strop.

Der Spyder Sharpener eignet sich nicht nur für die Serrations an Messern des US-amerikanischen Herstellers Spyderco. Sondern auch für andere Messer mit Glatt- oder Wellenschliff. Da der Stein verschiedene Profile bietet, ist er im Grunde ein kleiner Multiformstein (slipstone), mit dem sich auch (Holz-)Bearbeitungswerkzeuge schärfen lassen. Zumindest die kleinen Beitel für Zierschnitzereien. Auch kleine Sägen, wie sie an Multifunktionswerkzeugen wie Schweizer Messern zu finden sind, lassen sich mit dem Stein nachschärfen. Ebenso eignet sich die flache Seite des Steins für Klingen von Taschenmessern mit Glattschliff. Zwar die die Auflagefläche nicht besonders breit, das Schärfen dadurch nicht gerade komfortabel. Wichtig ist für mich: Es geht. Das ist gerade unterwegs eine gute Sache, da der Schärfer - auch wenn man Abstriche machen muss - viele Optionen bietet, die ein Taschenstein nicht bietet. Die Endkappen schützen den Schärfer, der sehr leicht zerbricht (gesinterte Keramik eben, verhält sich im Prinzip nicht anders als ein Keramikteller o.ä.). Ich nutze den kleinen Stein lieber ohne die Kappen, da sich so die Nutzfläche vergrößert. Somit stehen ohne die Kappen ~10cm (4 Zoll) zur Verfügung. Wie man es z.B. vom DC4 oder CC4 des schwedischen Herstellers Fällkniven kennt. Ich mag diese Länge bei meinen Schärfern sehr. Alles in allem bin ich mit dem Spyder Sharpener sehr zufrieden. Da die Körnung schon ziemlich fein ist (vergleichbar wie die Steine bzw. Stäbe in der Körnung "Medium" von Spyderco), taugt er nicht besonders gut, um stumpfe Klingen zu schärfen. Das geht zwar, dazu braucht es dann eine Menge Geduld. Schade, dass Lansky nur den Dog Bone (also den runden Stab) in den Körnungen mittel und fein anbietet, die anderen Schärfstäbe (Spyder, Multi, CS) nur in der mittleren Körnung. Und nicht noch einen groben Diamantstab im Sortiment hat. Für mich wäre der Schärfer perfekt, wenn es noch andere Körnungen gäbe.
