Which port is the intake. the case is not marked and the instructions do not show the port orientation relative to the case

I opted to use the port closest to middle of unit for input and port near back unit for output. The chiller has been working perfectly in this configuration for me for over month now.

It looks like you can put a filter in line. Is this correct? If so is the pump still required if the filter is impeller deiven?

You can connect an additional filter yourself, no need to use the water pump provided.
