Can the button be removed so I can put a clear cover over it?

Hello,you'd better don't remove the button,it’s very difficult to recovery after remove .

What diameter is the button?

about 1-5/8" or 4 cm. This is a very nice stop unit. If you do purchase this box, consider drilling a hole near the bottom-side of the box to accommodate the cable. This will better allow the cable to clear the switch.

If I use this for a lamp will pushing it once turn on the light then pushing it again turn it off?

You push it in and it turns your device off. Knob will stay in You turn/twist knob 90 degrees clockwise and knob pops out and turns your device on
