Boot Perfection!!
I ordered these boots in the tan color. I normally wear a size 7 in western boots with more of a pointed toe as well as many other shoes depending on the manufacturer. I can also wear a 6 1/2 in some. For me, length as well as the arch placement are most important in a shoe or boot. I've had 6 1/2 shoes where the length was perfect, but the arch was in the wrong place for my foot. I have a pair of Frye Carmen X Stitch ankle boots in a 6 1/2. The length is fine, but the arch placement is a little off. However, those are a completely different style of boot with a taller heel. My foot is a normal width and my heel is a little on the narrow side. I was so uncertain what size to order based on all the other reviews. So I ordered a 6 1/2 and a 7. The 7 was a bit too long and loose around my foot. The 6 1/2 was perfection!! The arch support is great and in the right place. The heel slipped a bit as expected with new boots. The foot fits nicely without pinching or my foot wabbling around. I've been wearing them everyday to work for a week with the typical medium weight socks I always wear. I also ordered a can of the Frye Leather Conditioning Cream that arrived a couple days after the boots. The cream did a great job of softening the leather. It also darkened the boots somewhat, but that was fine with me. I expected it would take a few weeks to break them in considering they are made from thick leather that is meant to last. I was prepared to use my tried and true "blow dryer in the boot" method to work on any snug or stiff areas, but I never had to. In less than a week the heel has stopped slipping and the boots are really forming to my feet -- no sore spots, tight toes, or blisters. The sole material is awesome as well even on frosty and slippery surfaces and helps cushion the bottom of your feet so you don't feel rocks through the boots. I realize a lot of people may shy away from spending so much money on a pair of boots, but these are worth the investment: they are comfortable when you get the correct size, they are constructed extremely well, they will obviously last many many years, and they're smart looking boots. I get complements on them every day!

Best bargain ever!
Couldn't believe the price on these Frye boots, chocolate color. I've had my eye on them for a year now, and checked Amazon site just to see if they were available. Bought them thinking if there was a problem I could return, thanks to awesome Amazon customer service. These boots are perfect! I wonder if people are turned off by the color on the picture here. They are not as distressed looking in person. The picture has them looking kind of "cracked or flaky" but that is not at all the case. The leather is beautiful, supple and a darker more rich chocolate brown color. Yes they are not evenly colored so that part is true, but they don't look beat as the picture here. I have another pair of Frye boots (12R harness) size 9M and ordered these the same size. Perfect fit. The mid foot did seem a bit tight at first but after wearing a few hours that dissipated. I have a high arch so the tightness may have been due to my foot specifically. I wear a 9 in regular shoes so I do not recommend downsizing for these. They are true to size, in my case. I wear orthotics and had no problem fitting them in the boots. Also the toe is square so if you like a bit more toe room this is the boot for you. Typical super high quality Frye boots with fabulous Amazon pricing and customer service. Perfect combination! Highly recommend.

Quality boots! Nice looking and rugged in a few ways...
I purchased these short boots in the Russet color. This was my first pair of Frye boots. There are no stores that carry Frye near me, and, looking at them online, the price was never something that I could justify. I wanted to see if they lived up to the fame surrounding the name, so, when I saw these on sale for a reasonable price, I went for it, even though I was uncertain of the color (they seemed a bit orange online). Well, so far, they are great! The color is actually rich and beautiful- it reminds me of a beautiful honey wood stain color. Even my husband (who never approves of me getting a new pair boots) commented that the color was eye-catching. It looks great with all my jean colors and washes (blue, grey, black, even green). The height is exactly what I was looking for... covers my ankle completely, keeps jeans tucked well, but ends below the calf. The leather on the upper is great quality (wonderful smell), and the sole inside the boot is covered in leather, too, which feels very nice. The harness style makes them look a bit rugged, but the smooth shine of the leather is classy at the same time. There is a substantial arch in the boot, which is great for me, as I have high arches that often require inserts for support. These boots will not need that! I was concerned that the upper being unlined would cause discomfort. The top of the shaft did rub the back of my leg a bit (even through my jeans) for the first few hours of wear, but it softened and causes no discomfort now. However, I do wish the inside of the boot shaft itself were lined, just because I prefer lined boots. I did have a hard time knowing what to order for size, and I had to read a lot of reviews to get an idea. Most of my other boots and shoes are 7.5, but I can range between 7 and 8 depending on cuts. After reading reviews (half said to order your normal size and half said to order ยฝ size down), I went with my most normal size of 7.5 to play it safe. Initially, I was concerned these were too large, as they did have heel slippage. I knew they were supposed to have some, but I didnโt know how much is too much. After trying them and discovering this, I wanted to order a 7 to try out (LOVE Amazonโs return policy on shoes), but they were not available in the same color, and the other colors were way out of my price range. I actually was looking at a pair of 12Rโs, too, so I ordered them in a 7. They were too small for my feet, especially in the width. There was no way could I wear them comfortably, and I doubt the leather would break in enough to make them pain-free. So, I kept these in the 7.5 in the 8R (returned the 7's), and I am glad I did! I do wear them with regular socks (not especially think or thick), and after wearing three times, they feel almost perfect. As they get broken in over time, I may have to get a thin insert or wear a slightly thicker sock, but I am sure they will be fine, and they are so comfortable even after being on my feet all day. However, it is worth reiterating what other reviewers have said: these are not delicate boots. These are heavy and clunky. They make noise when you walk, and you can feel the weight of them. That is fine with me, as I need them to hold up to my not-so-delicate treatment, and I know these will last. If you are looking for something dainty or โlady-likeโ, this is not it. Also, they do have quite a wide opening at the top of the shaft. It is very easy to tuck jeans into these, which is what I usually do, but I think they look silly on me with skirts, as my skinny ankles make it look like I am wearing shoes that are too big. They work under boot-leg jeans, but there might be a visible ridge under the jeans where the shaft opening is, depending on the jean. Overall, I am quite happy with these, and I plan to wear them a lot. I have already gotten a number of compliments. I also am very happy with how easy and worry-free it is to order boots and shoes from Amazon. I love that they seem to appreciate how important it is to try shoes on by offering free returns.

I will rock these for years!
Most important info: These run slightly large. I normally wear a size 8.5. I ordered these in size 8.5, and they were too big so I exchanged them. The size 8 fits perfectly. If you've never worn Fryes or other similar boots before (which I hadn't), these will feel very weird when you first get them. They will feel stiff and heavy on your feet. I was at first very disappointed after wanting these for so long and finally treating myself, because they felt so strange on my feet. But eventually I got used to it, they broke in nicely, and now they feel great. These boots are what sold me on Fryes and got me hooked; I've since bought 3 more pairs. The quality and durability is unsurpassed. They're starting to get a little scratched up from being worn so much, and unlike other boots that may look junky when they get worn, these are just starting to look better with their age! These boots have become an indispensable part of my wardrobe. They lend a certain "edge" and toughness to any outfit you pair them with. I especially love them with leggings and tunics, or to toughen up a feminine dress. I even wear them to the office sometimes; they're like a little bit of "tough girl chic" peeking out from underneath trouser pants. :) I put "Superfeet DELUX Dress-fit 3/4 insoles" in these to get a little arch support and make the boots more comfortable. The insoles fit very nicely in the boot, and they really make a difference in terms of comfort. I work downtown and routinely walk 2+ miles a day in these boots, getting to and from the office and places where I walk to run errands. The leather is so thick and durable, the sole has good grip, and the heel is high enough to be fashionable, but not so high that you feel any strain from wearing them. They're just a great all-purpose boot.

Awesome! But watch the size!
I was looking for some boots to wear out on the motorcycle and it kind of turned into an ordeal. I read a lot of reviews about less expensive (made in China) boots and wasn't really thrilled with what I saw out there. I stumbled on these while looking at the FRYE Engineer boot (which is also made in China, apparently) and liked the fact that FRYE is an established company and that these particular boots were made in the good, ole USA. Unlike the Engineer boot, these have a square (not a rounded) toe. They do not have any kind of zipper, but the tabs on the top make it easy to get in and out of them. I normally wear a size 6.5 to 7 depending on the shoe. I ordered these in a 7 and when I first tried them on, they seemed to fit well, but when I went to wear them a day or two later, I discovered they were actually too big. I exchanged them for the 6.5 which was also a bit big. I was going to size down to the 6, but when I traded out my thin work socks for a thicker pair of socks (that I will actually wear with the boot), they fit perfectly. My advice... size down. At least 1/2 a size, maybe a whole size depending on what kind of socks you plan to wear with these. Otherwise, they are comfortable and haven't needed much of a break in period... and they look real good. ;)

They are loose fitting and narrow fitting, but well-made shoes
These are amazing boots. They look great they were made well however, if you have wide feet theyโre very narrow fitting however i am a size 11 so I bought an 11they were not only loose fitting but narrow - i have wide feet so if I did go down a size, I probably would squeeze my foot . I did contact the company that makes these shoes and they said theyโre sizing is such that theyโre not made for wide feet and many people always size down. unfortunately I had to return them.

Exceeded my expectations!
I think I may have a problem with Frye boots. Well, an addiction really. Full disclosure, this is my 5th pair of Fryes. They join the Harness 12R, the Melissa Logo, the Veronica combat, and the Jane Strappy. Just before getting these Harness 8R in TAN, I had ordered the Heath Heel Bootie. They were a real disappointment. Bad construction, ratty leather, and a much higher price tag. I did some research and learned that there are a small selection of Fryes still made in the USA. It is this group of Fryes that have some of the better manufacturing techniques, such as Goodyear Welting. This type of welting contributes alot of staying power to the boot and allows it to be re-soled. Just wanted to include some of this info in my review in case it helps others make a decision. In the future, I will stick with the core lines of Frye: harness, engineer, campus styles. I was looking for another shorter boot to take me into warmer months. I am planning on wearing with skirts, shorts, dresses in spring and summer. I wanted a brown and agonized for a while over which one: blazer brown, dark brown, crazy horse. I made the right choice in the strangely labeled TAN. The boot color is exactly as pictured on the Amazon product page. It is a rich, cool (not orangey) "bomber jacket" brown. The boots are only very lightly distressed looking - I prefer to do my own distressing. I have ordered all of my Fryes in 8.5. This is 1/2 to 1 full size UP FROM MY NORMAL 7.5 shoe size. I do not agree with the other posters that Fryes must be sized down. The boots (esp. the Harness) are narrow in the toe box. When you size down, it makes the toe area too tight and boot hard to get on and off. I have not found the boots to stretch and I don't want to own a $200+ boot that is too tight. Some heel slippage is both normal and desirable in a boot. It lessens as you break the boot in. These fit exactly the same as my Harness 12Rs in black. The leather has the same matte, oily feel as the black 12Rs. The brown has a softer look and I am thrilled. They are surprisingly heavy for shorter boots, but not a problem for me. I still feel a little guilty about indulging my boot fetish, but the quality and workmanship of the 8Rs helps alot! I have to add that I sincerely hope that Frye does NOT continue in its trend of manufacturing more styles in Mexico and even worse, China. I was mistakenly shipped a pair of Fryes made and China and they had nothing in common with the Harness, except the ridiculous price tag. I fear that my hope is in vain though. Amazon did their usual great job in getting me my boots!!!

Gorgeous, cheaper then the bay (wait for a sale) ...
Gorgeous, cheaper then the bay (wait for a sale), and very well made. The do fit big. I'm normally a 10 and ordered a 9.5. I might have been able to fit into a 9 length wise but they would probably be too narrow for my wider feet. I got regular width.
