what size is the drain .

Strainer is 1 3/4" and the drain pipe is the standard 1 1/2". My wife uses it in the prep area and it's very pleased with it.

Is the flange perfectly flat on the bottom or is it ever so slightly "funnel" shaped? My sink is made with a very slight funnel in the bottom.

It is flat, I used butyl puty and it has worked fine

Can the drain be closed so water does not pass through it?

Yes, on the bottom of the lug, there is a rubber seal that when inserted and given a slight twist, seals the drain. We use this on our trailer and boat, it works just finr.

My drain is 1 3/4 inch. Description says 2 to 2 1/2 in. The diagram is 1 3/4 in. Am i missing something?

If the hole size in your sink is 1 3/4" this drain should work. The drain is 1 3/4" in dia. and it takes a 1 1/2" drain pipe. This will not work in a standard kitchen sink, only a bar sink or in an RV.
