DVD/CD Receiver

Right tool for the right job.
Ok, this is NOT a high end receiver. However, it is an excellent compact receiver that is perfectly suitable for bookshelf speakers (i.e. on a desk). I have 2 of these-- one paired to a set of Bose 301s (my office) and a pair of 201's (Wife's desk). Sound quality is great, even at maximum. Works with iPod/iPad/iPhone & USB media. Only complaint would be you MUST have the remote to perform some functions (i.e. Equalizer... so don't lose or misplace it), and FM Tuner tuning is VERY painful (read the section on programming the 10 presets and use them-- or go crazy). Otherwise, is a very nice tuner.

Works well though not full-featured
I’m not sure if this particular model was ever sold in the U.S. Searches for reviews a short while back came up with buyers in Canada and further abroad. I took a chance on it anyway and it seems promising for my purposes but I have only done some quick testing at this point. It does not come with matched speakers but still seems to be worth several times what the price is now. The unit arrived well protected in original packaging inside a larger Amazon box. I ordered from Secondipity and they very kindly provided a credit when the price dropped a significant amount just the day after I received mine.I am eventually looking to replace a full size system in my living room with something of approximate functionality but much smaller size. You can get slimline AV receivers and micro components from several manufacturers but you pay a premium for less height and they are still the same width or for less width but still tall. I wanted skinny in height and width like this unit. This seems to be unsold stock of an older and likely discontinued model. It has no Bluetooth, no WiFi, no subwoofer connection, cheaper speaker connection terminals, and doesn’t play Bluray discs. It is also light on power though worked well enough with my Energy bookshelf speakers. It seems like it would get loud enough for a smaller room or at low-medium volume listening. The DVD player worked quietly in my testing. I do listen to a lot of music off a USB and this Pioneer has that option on the front. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a shuffle function that works with mp3 files on USB. That was a little disappointing. It seems as if it might shuffle mp3 files on a CD if anyone is still using those. My plan is to use this as an amp to power a newer Bluray player that will handle DVD and Bluray discs and give me Internet apps for radio and streaming movies. As a test I connected this through a ViewHD HDMI Audio Extractor. I was able to send the video from the Bluray player on to my TV and the audio through this receiver's R/L line in to my speakers.Having confirmed it can do what I will eventually want it to do I didn’t really test it out much further so I can’t comment on extended use. The unit, even along with all the packaging, is very light. You can decide if that is good or bad. A couple of other notes – this came with Spanish as the default language for the OSD. It took just a few minutes looking through a searchable PDF version of the manual to figure out how to change it to English. You pretty much have to have this connected to a TV all the time if you want to be able to navigate the different settings because they don’t display fully on the unit itself. At the price it is now ($50) this is a really good deal if it fits your needs but be aware of its limitations. I have attached a photo to show the top view with venting.

Excellent unit for the price
Excellent unit for the price! However, tuning to a radio station is excruciatingly slow. There is no fast tuning to the station you want. The tuner will lock on to the next station even though you have the up/down button pressed. So you have to constantly keep pressing the button. So imagine if you want to listen to FM106.70 and you're at 92.3. You could get around this by saving stations in the memory. No dice. Tried everything possible, nothing worked. I have to admit, the tuner is extremely sensitive, FM stations were clear and pristine and with a pair of BIC DV 32 speakers, music was rich with lively mids and more than adequate bottom end. I really don't want to return it but after 2 days of utter frustration, i was ready to toss it out the window.

Good things come in small packages.
I bought this to replace my recently deceased Sony Discman. I've been pleasantly surprised at the quality of sound this unit puts out. I use it mostly to listen to Jazz on CD while I'm pedaling away on my exercise bike. I listen through Sennheiser HD-202 headphones. This unit works very well for that purpose. Another reviewer reported he was unable to set up the FM presets. Didn't work for me either, but since I bought this little beauty for the built in CD player, that's no problem. The unit has a built in bass boost which is the default condition. I found it to be too much boost for my ears. Fortunately the bass boost can be disabled by pressing the P.Bass button on the remote, but this must be done every time the unit is turned on. The X-HM21V-K suits my purposes perfectly -- and the price can't be beat.

From Pioneer Mexico
Very happy with the unit. It was made for the Mexican market, thus it comes ready to play zone 4 DVDS (Latin America and Caribbean). Good range of outputs. Buy decent speakers and it will suprise you.
