Leviton Motion Sensor Light Switch, Motion Activated, Auto-On/Auto-Off or Manual-On, 5A, No Neutral Wire Required, Single Pole or 3-Way, DOS05-1LZ, White/Ivory/Light Almond

It is a good idea to understand three way switches before starting. That being said, very easy to install, very easy to program and works terrific. I have it in my garage so now I have more light than just the puny light in the door opener that comes on automatically.

This worked perfectly with my 3-way setup. I have one mechanical switch on one side and the Leviton on the other, and it works great in my garage. Previously, the light switch was behind the door, so I had to walk down the steps into a dark garage just to reach it. That’s no longer an issue—the light turns on as soon as I enter the garage. The manual switch still works as expected and will also time out, since the sensor functions with manual operation as well. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that the auto-off feature cannot be disabled once installed. However, you can set the timer to up to 20 minutes if needed or simply wave your hand to reset it, so it’s not a big drawback. Very happy with this solution—thank you. Make sure you follow the directions as it must be placed where traveler wires go to the light. The mechanical switch must be placed where power enters from panel per directions you can not change this. Must work with a mechanical switch also.

It's tough to accommodate every electrical scenario but this unit will not work in my house because the box with the LOAD (where the sensor MUST be installed) is at the wrong end of the stairs. The sensor labeling itself is confusing (they use a "line" wire for a traveler) BUT the paper directions are very clear. Their call-in tech support was OUTSTANDING, speaking at the right technical level and not spending time on entry-level stuff.

First: If you are a novice at doing electrical work. Hire someone to install this. Also the programming procedure is a little confusion. There is a number of issues when installing into a normal size electrical switch/outlet box. This us a multi-function switch in that it can be used for single pole (normal) switch or as one of the switches in a 3 way circuit. The instructions assume the person doing the install has experience doing electrical work. Right out of the box you notice there are a lot of wires attached to the switch. Depending how you want to use it you man not need to connect all the wires. However the size of the switch is large compared to a normal single pole switch. The size of the switch plus the wires attached to the switch, when added to the wires coming from the service panel and the wires going to the light fixture PLUS the addition of at least 2 wire nuts, made it very difficult to fit everything back into the electrical box.

Don't buy if you're looking for a true 3-way switch. I fully installed it and couldn't figure out how to "toggle twice" to make it work as a 3-way switch. And even if I figured it out, I wouldn't expect everyone using it as they walk through the room to know how to "toggle twice" to make it turn off or on correctly... Yes - it works without the neutral, which is why I bought it. But it doesn't work as a 3-way.

Replaced manual switch in an interior room that sees high traffic. Now, we don't have to look for a switch and can just walk in.

Worked great but leviton doesn't provide worrying instructions to hook two of these up to a 3 way switch even though they are designed for a 3 way switch.

I have 3-way wiring for the light. I wired the switch according to the (when neutral is not present, 3-way) directions, but it only worked when the other switch was in the down position. As an experiment, I switched the two "traveler" connections where they were connected to the DOS05-1LZ. Now it only works when the other switch is in the up position. This clearly indicates the problem is inside the DOS05-1LZ. In other words, I can't use the remote 3-way switch. Contacted customer support on 12/28/2025, no response almost 2 weeks later, will update if they ever respond.

Fonctionne parfaitement mais j'ai donné un 4 parce que les instructions de programmation sont difficiles à comprendre. Une fois parfaitement installée, je suis ravie que les lumières s'allument instantanément des que l'on ouvre la porte et s'éteignent après notre départ. Fini l'oublie de fermer les lumières. Je recommande cet interupteur mais il faut un peu d'habilité et de patience pour son installation.

This sensor switch is very versatile and can be used in various ways. I used it in vacancy mode to turn the lights off if left on and no motion detected. My wiring was 3 way and a little different than their diagrams but with a little thought the connections were easily determined. Important to remember that the other switch must be toggled twice to turn off. This is especially important to remember when first testing after installation or you will fool yourself into thinking you haven't installed it properly. Recommend for quality, flexibility and value.
