Best of the best
Initially bought another brand which was a little cheaper and let me tell you...the difference is huge. I'm talking about the build quality and beefiness of the Hubbell is on another level. Just the plug size itself feels superb compared to the cheaper version. I bought both and gave it to my electrician to get an opinion and he chose the Hubbell. Wiring is nice and thick and the outlet doesn't get hot at all! So far, the unit functions as expected with not having to worry if something could go wrong if I went to save a few bucks for an outlet that was less superior. Hubbell packaging looks cheap, just a yellow unmarked box. The other brand had fancy letting and graphic to make it seem expensive. But it's what's inside that counts. If you're thinking about adding a high quality, great value NEMA 14-50 outlet to your home, this one would be it!

The Right Receptacle for EV Charging – Don’t Skimp on Quality
If you need a receptacle for EV charging, this is the one to get. Avoid the cheap knock-offs—there’s a real difference in quality, and this option is worth it. I installed it for Level 2 charging, and it’s been working flawlessly. This is a critical component, so don’t go cheap on something this important.

Rock Solid
This 14-50R receptacle is as well built as all of the YouTubers who produce electrical and solar how-To videos say. I was able to mount the standard dual gang square box housing it between a dual stud post (see picture) I found in my garage wall, so there is no flex when plugging in a cable. I ran 3/4-inch metal flex conduit to my panel and used 6 AWG THHN for the three conductors and 10 AWG for the ground. Currently using a Tesla mobile connector with this receptacle for a Tesla model Y limited to 32 amp charging on a 40-amp breaker. As expected, no issues at this level. The conductors in the conduit and the receptacle only get slightly warm during a four-hour top-off charging session. The Tesla cable that is part of their mobile connector does get quite warm during charging at 32 amps. This receptacle feels very smooth and solid as I plug and unplug the 14-50 adapter that comes with the Tesla mobile connector. I HAVE NOT DONE THIS, BUT I would expect to have no issues going to 40 amp charging on a 50-amp breaker as long as the Tesla cable didn't get too warm. AGAIN, I HAVE NOT DONE THIS YET, SO THIS IS ONLY AN EDUCATED GUESS.

The best for EV plugs
I asked the builder to put in an EV charging outlet during the build. The electrician put in a dryer plug outlet (nema 14-50). Technically it works, but it’s not a safe option, as I noticed by how hot my charging cable was getting during use. I did some reading and found that this was a much better, safer outlet to use than the cheaper dryer outlets. This is the receptacle you want if you’re going to charge an EV at home from a 240V outlet. It is made differently than a dryer plug version (nema 14-50 standard), because unlike those, an EV plug might be removed and replaced frequently. Nobody unplugs their dryer on a regular basis and plugs it back in. Dryer plug versions also aren’t designed for seven straight hours of high voltage draw, so they can melt. They can catch fire for the same reason. This one is designed for that higher sustained load needed to charge the car battery. It has better wire attachment design. It has the little green EV logo to tell you that it is for that use. I’m sure it is overkill for a regular dryer plug, but for an EV charging plug, it has all the features you want.

Receptable for Level 2 Charger plug.
Straightforward install. Seems to be high quality for sustained high amperage use. I'm using it with a Grizzl-E charger.

No issues with this
Charges my EV on 50 amp breaker running 40 amps through the outlet. Solid.

Most recommended for EV charging
I asked my electrician about the error code my car was displaying. It turns out, I needed to replace my existing 14-50 outlet with a sturdier one that is rated for EV. They tend to wear out due to the daily charging. This one is the one! Made in the USA and well recommended by electricians. The Tesla forums definitely recommended the Hubbell branded outlets. This one retails for a bit more but is worth it for the piece of mind. My electrician even installed it for me.
