La Sirena Sardines in Tomato Sauce Oval Can, 15 oz

So glad to see this brand available on Amazon. Previously, I could get this brand only at a certain Mexican Food market in my area. These are the real deal ! They are large, plump, not oily or fishy nor iodine-y. They come packed in a generous, mild tomato sauce and are easily split to remove the bones. I make open faced sandwiches using toasted San Luis Sour Dough Cracked Wheat Bread, spreading the slice generously with the tomato sauce and sardines. Any extra sardines make a nice treat for my cats alongside some regular cat food. They love these tasty fishes as much as I do. Hope this brand will continue to be available on Amazon.

I have to admit I have struggled with sardines my whole life. Than being said I greatly enjoyed these! I found the texture of the fish very good and the taste was not over powering. There are some bones, but it is to be expected. The portions inside the can are healthy, not the sleek little minnows of a sardine that some have come to expect, still it is a perfect lunch sized portion with a little rice or even on a corn tortilla. I broke up the portions and ate the tin over a few sittings, the tomato sauce was fairly mild, so I added a good dousing of hot sauce. It can take the heat if you like to spice things up. I give it four starts, subtracting one for the bones and lack of zest in the sauce, but belive me when I tell you these little fishes restored my faith in sardines.

These sardines are Ok but do not get high marks. There are really only two large chunks of fish in each can, approximate size is 1.5" thick, 2.5" wide, and 3.5" long. To give another perspective, the spinal column in each piece is about the diameter of a pencil and I did encounter some good sized rib bones. So these were pretty large fish. That being said, the fish itself does taste good and the flesh was firm and flaky, and tomato sauce is pretty much just plain tomato sauce. I rate it as only Ok because I prefer sardines that are considerably smaller and the bones are inconsequential.

They need to make a can that is easier to open. The tomato sauce and sardines are very good!

I've been eating the product in tomato sauce for years but the last 6 months I have to admit the cans are getting impossible to open yesterday I started out with four can openers and it only opened about 40% of the can I have one more can to open and if I have the same problem then I will go to a different brand it's not worth the hassle.
