How do the springs work?

There are slots in your existing recessed housing. The tabs on the springs go into the slots and the spring tension holds this cover in place.

Does this trim fit a square opening 8 x 8" ?

No. It fits an opening of 9.5 x 9.

Will this fit a 73/4" opening?

The part of the fixture that must fit into the box measures 7 3/4". So it may just fit your opening. It did not fit my ceiling box which measured 7 1/4". I did not return it because it cost as much to mail it back as the fixture cost. Hope this helps.
