We did not want a lethal weapon for protection, so purchased this option. Practiced with it today shooting against a thick cardboard box from probably 25 feet away. Whoa Momma!! We used the training projectiles and I can tell you I would not want to get hit by one of these. Most of the shots penetrated the thick cardboard and into a second box behind the first one! Anyone breaking into our house would certainly feel the pain! We got the black model as someone looking at this weapon from 20+ feet would think it was a 45 caliber handgun. We certainly hope we never have to use it, but it is good to have some defense in this day and age. If you are looking for a non-lethal option to protect your home, this option would be highly recommended. Just remember even this non-lethal option is not a toy and it should be secured if children are in the house.

The Byrna SD is a compact CO2-powered less-lethal launcher that’s easy to use, has low recoil, and feels well made. It can be a reasonable option for someone who wants a less-lethal home or vehicle defense tool without stepping up to a firearm, especially if they value simple operation and are willing to practice with it. Its biggest downsides are cost, limited capacity, and the fact that it’s not a guaranteed stopper. You also have to account for ongoing CO2 and ammo costs, which of course is ongoing, but not very expensive at all and its real-world effectiveness depends a lot on accuracy, ammo choice, and training. Overall, it’s a solid niche option, but not the best fit if you want maximum concealability, the lowest cost, or firearm-level effectiveness. But there is a lot of stopping power and again it is called a non-lethal weapon so the power is just enough, and just right to get the job done. I love mine! And I will continue to buy from this company for life. They are constantly creating and innovating. I believe they are ahead of their time. That’s my opinion… Feel free to make it yours!

I love that it’s non lethal, but will definitely do the job of defense and give you plenty of time to get away from what could be the scariest day of your life. I’ve looked at cheaper options, and let me tell you… GET A BYRNA! Your life and safety is worth every penny. Just buy this!!! You won’t regret it!

Easy to use and understand.

This Byrna launcher SD exceeded expectations as far as quality. So much so I am debating on getting a 2nd one to leave in the bed room for the Mrs. While I’m at work for my 2 week hitch. I like the fact that you can replace the upper slide with one that has fiber optic sights. It was packaged very well. And I received what I expected to. If you are looking for a less leather option to carry this IS the one! The CO2 cartridge is punctured on the first trigger pull. My wife bought a different brand and you have to puncher the cartridge manually before you shoot. Time is precious in those moments. And if you puncture the CO2 before hand, what happens if it loses all or some of the pressure when you really need it no good! I sound like a sales person for this company I know, but I swear I’m not I work in oil and gas so it’s important to me that my wife has something to protect herself with while I’m gone for two weeks. They are a little bit pricier than some of the competitors but once you hold it, you’ll know why you cannot go wrong.

Too bulky for a personal carry weapon. OK to keep in the car or on the night stand for any situation that may arise. Tested the accuracy with the non kinetic ammo. At 40 ft. can hit a body size target every time. Can't speak to the "stopping capabilities" of the kinetic ammo, but I feel sure the impact of the hit will leave an ouchy bruise that would make an attacker think better of further advance.
