can these be paired with alexa alone for notifications? do you NEED the alarm or can it just be through alexa?

Hi, no you need the alarm - these sensors only work with the ring alarm system. You can pair the entire alarm system with Alexa, but none of the additional sensors (door, motion etc) will work without the alarm system.

I dont have white windows, it would be nice if the contact sensors came in brown as I would the buy then.

They don’t do brown that I am aware off however they do black sensors which are designed to be outside but would work. Alternative is to spray them the colour you want

Does this does the sensor work on a letterboxwork on a letterbox

Yes it should work on a letterbox provided you have surfaces wide enough to stick the sensors to two flat surfaces and keep close together to engange the signal .Once the contact is broken by opening the letterbox the alarm will sound on the control panel if not in disarmed mode.
