Calling Space Ghost. Space Ghost Here!!
Bought this product on a whim as I've always liked Superhero cartoons since I was a small boy. This series came and went before I was born, but I was very familiar with Space Ghost. When I was a boy, they repackaged and syndicated the Space Ghost shorts in other programs on Saturday Mornings and Weekdays. In the 80's they created a show called Space Stars which featured all new adventures of Space Ghost along with other heroes. Finally, in the 90's there was Space Ghost Coast to Coast from Cartoon Network where the hero was turned into a rather doltish talk-show host who interviewed live-action celebrities of the time. Basically, Space Ghost has been around my whole life. For those of you who don't know, Space Ghost was a superhero living in some far distant future. He had a space ship, The Phantom Cruiser, and was teamed up with a pair of teenage siblings known as Jan & Jayce and a pet monkey named Blip. His powers included flight, the ability to survive and talk in space, "Inviso-Power" which enabled him to turn invisible by touching a button on his belt and his "Power Bands" which were gauntlets worn on his wrists which could fire various rays such as heat-beams, freeze-beams, force beams and the like. Jan, Jayce and Blip also had Inviso-Power belts and flew around on jet-packs or in their little "Space Coupe". Together, they encountered many space villains and monsters which are just too numerous to list here. The show also features segments of Dino-Boy. This was a modern day kid who parachuted out of a crashing plane and landed in some Lost World where dinosaurs and primitive tribes of cave-men still existed. He befriended a Neanderthal named Ugh, a small Shetland Pony-sized Brontosaurus named "Bronty" and together they faced the strange monsters and dinosaurs that populated this land. Why are there dinosaurs and cave-men living together? Every kid just knew that there had to be a Lost World or Lost Continent somewhere on Earth where these creatures and people still lived. It was just accepted. Don't question the Science. Each episode of the series is divided into three segments about 7 minutes long. They begin with a Space Ghost segment, followed by a Dino-Boy segment and complete with a final Space Ghost segment. There are 20 episodes in all. These shows are just pure entertainment and adventure. They get right into the action and wrap up in 7 minutes, then it's on to the next segment. They don't provide back-stories or origin stories, and frankly, kids back then just didn't care. We didn't ask how Space Ghost got his powers, how he was teamed up with two kids and a monkey or who he was under his cowl. We didn't question why some kid who landed in a world full of dinosaurs decided to rename himself "Dino-Boy" (we never know his actual name) or why he just accepted life in a jungle with a caveman and a brontosaurus. All we cared about was the action, the creatures and the pure spectacle. The action was great, the aliens and monsters were amazing, and the worlds were extremely colorful and just great to look at. The Blu-Ray package is really good. Like all of the Warner Archive releases, the packages are fairly bare-bones releases. They mainly just feature the episodes, English Subtitle options and that's about it. No booklet with the package, but every episode name is listed on the two discs. There is one special feature on the second disc and it's a 78 minute biographic documentary on the late Alex Toth. He was the artist and cartoonist who designed Space Ghost among many other creations. I've only watched the first few minutes of this documentary as of this writing, but it looks interesting. Overall, the cartoons look great. Bright, full-color restorations with no hint of speck or scratch. Very glad I bought this package and I highly recommend it. It's good that Warner is releasing these old series because they need to be preserved. Cartoons and children's entertainment in general is going by the wayside in terms of quality and messaging, so it's good to keep these series alive so that we can remember what good old-fashioned entertainment used to be. I would also recommend getting these shows if you have children today. There is nothing objectionable whatsoever and I'm sure that kids of any age will find these shows entertaining. Plus, the more of these series we buy, the more we are sending a message to Warner that we like these shows and that we want them to release more from the vaults.

Rereleased with single sided DVDs
Great to see a rerelease of this on single sided disks after the 2007 double sided DVDs stopped working due to poor design and packaging back then. This set has all 20 episodes of Hanna-Barbera's first serious super hero show, including the 6 part crossover at the end, which was designed to introduce the stars of other shows: Herculoids, Shazzan, Moby Dick and Mightor. Alex Toth's fabulous art work and Hoyt Curtin's great score make for real entertainment.

Space Ghost and Dino Boy...the 3 disc version...
I first heard of Space Ghost in the 1980s during it's run on USA Network's "Cartoon Express". At that time the episodes appeared at random and were often mixed in with the early '80s adventures but this DVD is a re-release of the classic episodes from the mid '60s including the original secondary segment, Dino Boy. I missed the first release about 10 years ago or more...that release is still being offered on-line and for outrageous prices...and that release has all episodes crammed onto 2 double sided discs. This re-release features 3 single sided discs but the episodes appear in the same non-chronological order as the first release. Obviously this is a pain for purists but I'm a bit more tolerant. Strangely enough I don't remember seeing Dino Boy on the USA Network "Cartoon Express"...but maybe it aired and I can't remember!? Anyway, as an adult I'm much more focused on the vocalists rather than the things that grab your attention as a child. Gary Owens stars as Space Ghost and Don Messick can be heard in an assortment of roles in both the Space Ghost and the Dino Boy segments. Mike Road is the voice of caveman, Ugh. He's the same voice actor for Zandor in The Herculoids and Race Bannon on Jonny Quest in case you're wondering. One of those Don Messick voices is Bronty which can be explained as Scooby Doo in panic mode (Bronty doesn't speak...he mumbles, groans, and cries in a Scooby-like vocal). Don can also be heard as Zorak and the sound effect of Blip. The voice of Todd (Dino Boy) is an actor named Johnny Carson...of course it's not the legendary late night talk show host...but nevertheless people often ask prior to their seeing an episode if it's the same Johnny Carson from late night fame. This led the actor to begin billing himself as John Carson in the hopes of avoiding those inevitable questions. My 5 star rating is due to the re-release being single sided discs and I love hearing those vocalists.
