How does this attach to the hole I will cut into my aluminum soffit?

There are screw holes in the flange of the inner (black) piece. You will screw the black piece into the material surrounding the hole. The white louvered cover will conceal the screws when installed. FYI, I found that the perforations on the white cover were so small that not enough air could get through, so I cut that out leaving only the louvers in place. Now the fan can do its job because the air can flow through.

how to install this through the 1" thick drywall ceiling?

Use a circle cutter for sheetrock (Home Depot, Lowes, Ace etc.) and screws through the flange of the inner black section. May need to use cavity fasteners.

What is the flow direction, into the grill or out of the grill?

The grill is used with vent duct to exit outside the structure so flow is from inside out. The grill is to prevent critters and birds from getting into your house.

can anyone tell me exact inside and outside diameter?

inside diameter is 2.83 inch. outside diameter is 4.53 inch

Performs as should

Inner screen snapped in half first attempt at installing..replaced it with a piece of leftover screen i had from a window repair some time ago. Fixture fit perfectly in the hole as it should after making said hole with a 6” hole saw..one bump with the heel of my hand and it was installed and running like a swiss watch.
