Bought this in preparation for a trip to colorado, luckily we never needed to deploy it. It's easy to assemble with the chest strap or the belt clip. Very lightweight and comfortable I watched a lot of videos on how to use and seemed very easy if I needed to use it in an actual bear encounter

Received: February 2022 Best By: January 2025 Product of: USA While I do wish this came with a practice canister, there is much to like about this SABRE Frontiersman Bear Spray: a slimmer snug holster, no elastic strap, shoulder harness, and 3-year shelf life. I’ve carried Counter Assault Bear Spray for a long time and counted on it to keep me and my dogs safe when walking. (To be fair, Counter Assault doesn’t come with a practice canister by default.) I started “carrying” after multiple friends and their dogs were attacked by unrestrained dogs while walking in our city and others. I’m glad SABRE started making bear spray and I trust their products, as I’ve carried SABRE personal protection pepper spray products for decades. One of the huge plusses for me is that I have to buy Counter Assault every year. When I receive it, I mark the next time to purchase it on my calendar. And while this SABRE Frontiersman bear spray has a similar price, it has a 3-year shelf life, which makes my life easier and ends up being less expensive. I also like the slim holster with no elastic to clear out of the way. I guess I’ll judge it again after I’ve carried it a few months, but so far so good. I haven’t tried the shoulder harness, and I’m not sure if I will, as I tend to carry these on my belt, but the harness looks as if it would be even easier to “draw” from. Bear spray is weaker, but shoots farther than self-defense spray. Bears are more sensitive to pepper spray than humans are, but the spray needs to travel farther, thus people need a different type and delivery of pepper spray to ward off bears (and other wildlife). So the basic idea is to spray a small plume (2 seconds) of bear spray when a bear is approaching from about 30 feet away or closer. If it comes closer, another couple seconds of spray. Eventually the bear will come into contact and will most likely turn away. Other wildlife SHOULD have a similar response, but when it comes to an animal that is sick or has rabies, or is bread for self-defense, you can throw out all the rules. I would still rather be with, than without bear spray. As far as this product, I have not had occasion to first use it and then second, to conduct an interview with the animal it is used on. The only way we can know it works is to trust the manufacturer and to follow the instructions (do NOT let it sit in a hot car or very cold car, it could explode). You can also VERY CAREFULLY test the spray to make sure it fires, but make sure there is no wind (duh!) and ensure you do not spray for longer than a second or two (there are only about 5-7 seconds of spray per can). I have no reason to deduct any stars. I saw one reviewer was annoyed at how this can was slightly smaller than one he purchased by the same manufacturer for same price. That's OK by me. Once you use the spray in a real life situation, you will likely need to replace the can anyway. And smaller, can be slightly more portable and easier to carry in more places, where it can be quickly withdrawn as needed. Lastly, remember, if you want something for self defense, find a pepper spray for human use. It is tempting to think if it will deter a bear that it will deter a human. But that is obviously flawed reasoning. Be safe out there!

Sabre has been a well recognized brand for bear and other self defense spray products so for items like this that you can't really try it out to make sure it works, it helps to go with a respected manufacturer. The bottle is smaller which makes it much less cumbersome to carry with you but some may say that its less product available to scare off bears. I don't know the right answer to that but I do know that if I have to carry this for long periods whether on my body or attached to a pack, I like the smaller packaging. I really like the holster that is built well and holds the canister securely yet keeps it easily and quickly deployable. There is also a very sturdy metal belt clip that is sewn into the holster that provides it with many different carry and attachment options. With this kit it also came with a chest harness option which I was excited for but when I tried it, felt very uncomfortable. I had to let it out almost all the way on the tri-glides just to fit me and I'm not that big (5'10, 44"chest) so if youre a bigger person, this chest harness might not fit you at all. I had been thinking about getting some bear spray but always put it off because we always stayed in designated campsites that never saw roaming bears...up until a recent trip to South Lake Tahoe where we were camping close to the interstate and a pretty populated area and in a campsite that is pretty dense and even has campers and RV's. I didn't think bears would roam into this type of areas, but guess what they did. After that, I was adamant about getting and keeping bear spray with me in whenever I'm in bear country.

I really like this brand of bear spray. I live in the mountains in grizzly country and no one in their right mind goes out without bear spray. This is a very well used brand around here. I especially like the holder it comes with. Normally they come with a belt and a cloth case for the spray. This one also comes with a shoulder strap attached to the belt. This is a great design because the best place you can have your spray is right in front of you. Some people tape their cases to back pack straps. In a front position on your chest you don't even have to take it out of the sheath and you can just start spraying. When you wear it on your waist you have to take it out of your sheath first. Remember the higher it is the better because the bear is taller than you even in a running position so spraying high toward their eyes is what you want. This is a well thought out layout by a company experienced in bear deterrent products.

Camping is something i like to do with it being an ever increasing activity i am enjoying more as i age. In Ohio there are not that many dangerous animals wandering around that can do serious harm to people though occasionally scenarios occur. I always am hearing about sightings of bears or bobcats so they are out there just not in the same sense as like Australia. Where i live and venture out into i am more likely to have harm inflicted on me by a criminal from nearby Akron or Cleveland. Regardless when i head out into Southern Ohio lands i like to be equipped with self defense tools. I am not big into traditional weapons like a rifle or crossbow so a cannister of maces is more in line with my personality. I never want to kill any animals even if they are wild and after me because i know they know now better. With this professional bear mace cannister and accompanying holster from the Sabre brand i have found the perfect self defense tool that promotes non violence. As indicated on the bottom of the cannister this is good for three years which is plenty of time for me to cover several seasons in Ohio. I love how the holster is not cheap but made to be able to be used in several ways other than just a waist thing. The holster is also neat because the bottom part is made of an elastic bad material which allows the can to sink down and therefore house itself comfortably. There are plenty of safety instructions as well as precautions on the cannister itself which i recommend reading thoroughly before handling. This comes with a strong zip tie fastener that also has an additional plastic contraption on there as well to prevent unnecessary discharge of the mace. I want to point out that the man in the included video is qualified to use as well as talk about this kind of device. This person travel on yearly trips to regions where bears are a serious thing not the occasional stray Ohio bear. Writing a review about a self defense device is hard because the idea is to never use it and hence placing trust in the manufacturer. A trick to figuring out if this will do the job is to look at the ingredients on the can. I did not know most of the main things but did catch capsaicin. I am a person who has occasionally entered into super hot chocolate bar contests so i know what that is. Regardless of what the other chemicals or spices in the can do, i know that if any living thing is sprayed in the eyes with a heavily concentrated spray that contains capsaicin there is a good chance it will be in trouble for at least a temporary time frame. In conclusion i am very happy with this bear mace and recommend it for any one serious about non violence promoting self defense tools.
