Ubiquiti Networks Unifi Security Gateway, USG-PRO-4

I upgraded my network at home to a fiber optic network. I have a ubiquiti system. My existing gateway would not work with fiber. I reasearched it and found that it was an existing problem. Also, my research said this was the product that was the fix. So I finally ordered it and installed it last night. Installation was simple. Initially the system would not adopt it, but I reset it and the adoption process was easy. I had been using my existing ubiquiti system with the third party router for the fiber. Once I got this piece of equipment, I was able to start using my cloud key again. The system immediately updated all the devices and then the system was ready to go. The speeds for my network were noticably faster with the addition of this piece of equipment. Satisfied customer.

I moved my law firm to a new building and wanted to upgrade the network security appliance (a Fortinet 60E). I liked my old Fortinet for what it was, but I disliked the annual threat management fees and having to handle the nitty gritty of routing and monitoring the logs. Enter this Ubiquity USG-Pro-4 which provides reasonable Unified Threat Management features and an extremely robust software/hardware controller system that makes remote monitoring and configuration much easier. For small to medium size businesses, this is an excellent choice. For home users that want to ditch their minimally secure combo routers/wifi units (i.e. NetGear stuff you get at BestBuy), this is a solid choice. Don't expect it to be as user friendly (with step-by-step wizards) as a consumer grade router/switch. However, you can expect it to be much more secure if it is configured properly.

First, the good. This is significantly better than the entry level USG. I had to upgrade as I got a faster internet connection. The smaller model would max out around 200Mbps with most of the features turned off and hardware offload enabled. This model still requires most features disabled, but I'm able to hit 500mbps to 600mbps on it. Turning on the threat management significantly slows the device. Ubiquiti has a higher end model (XG) that was pulled from the market due to problems for a bit. I'm hoping they get that product back out and also add something in between this PRO model and the XG or bump the specs. A gigabit connection couldn't run on this model and it's obvious that the PRO isn't powerful enough for heavy workloads even at 500Mbps. I really like the management features on unifi gear and it's the big selling point. It was pretty easy to upgrade from the smaller USG to the pro model also. I do hope they get a slightly faster model out and consider upgrading to 2.5Gbps nbase-T connectivity so one doesn't have to jump to fiber connections for moderate performance. If you were using a connection up to say 300Mbps, most of the features would work and you'd be pretty happy with this. I just don't think it's ready for 500Mbps to gigabit speeds. Finally, the IPv6 support on this device is mediocre. Part of the problem is the upstream router from my cable provider, but the IPv6 supports feels like an afterthought and is a little irritating to try to setup. Documentation is lacking in this area. I can get an IP address on the WAN interface, but have never been able to get it to assign an IP to the inside network. If you need IPv6 functionality, it might be better to go with another product.

Love unifi/ubiquity products - best WiFi experience possible is what is provided without the wasted money on Netgear or Linksys junk. A little more involved for the novice home network consumer but easy to learn if you are willing.

These have been increasing in price. The UDMP just isn't up to the job that some of our deployments need. The USG Pro handles dualWAN load balance and guest wifi. Until the UXG Pro is readily available, these will be on the shelf.

I was sent a defective product that didn’t work. When I promptly returned it, I was charged a $149.99 “Refund distribution processing” fee and was only refunded $10 on my $160 payment for a defective product. If this is a new Amazon policy, I will order merchandise elsewhere

Works nearly automatically, out of the box. The UI is clean and easy to use; no complex CLI required; spent enough years doing that with Cisco products, I'm over it. ;-) Love all the features and flexibility it offers. Great for an SMB office with its own Internet connection.

Works as described. Good product.

Update (20/10/2021) Well 4 years after initial purchase and the UGPro is still my router of choice. It now appears unifi have left it to wither and hasn't had a firmware update since April 2021. But my virgin is now 500 down/36 up and with IPS on it seems the hard wall is at around 385Mbps. I'm now actively looking to replace it, but what with? The UDM Pro still seems to have issues if posts on the unifi forum are correct, unifi also had a fairly major security breach (Google it) but then again so did QNAP. So if you're considering buying new just be aware its likely to become end of line very shortly. Its been a cracking router and its a shame unifi didn't just update the CPU and release a V2 at a reasonable price. But hey ho. Update (28/11/2020) Well after 3 years since my original review, here's the latest. Its still performing well, it still scopes with the fastest Virgin service in my area with DPI and IPS switched on (around 380Mbps down and 38 up). It never locks up or freezes, the software updates from Ubuiqiti have largely ended now, I'm on 4.4.51 and as I said, it's rock solid. The IPS identifies lots of different scans of my network and attempts by the usual suspects to access or use exploits against my QNAP NAS, which IPS blocks. I would still recommend the USG Pro, don't get me wrong I also keep looking at it's replacement the UDM Pro, but the Unifi Forums are still full of complaints that its still really a "beta" product for now and until it gets to the same level of stability, or 1Gb internet is available, the USG P will be there doing its job. Updated Review. Well the USG-P is still doing sterling service, with Deep Packet Inspection and Intrusion Protection System ON, I am getting 380 Mbps Down and 38 Mbps Up. Which is the speed of our Virgin Cable connection. The device itself is extremely stable and has got better with every software/firmware upgrade. The whole Unifi ecosystem is excellent and I am very happy to recommend it. I also discovered that the RAM is upgradeable, and as I had a spare 4GB DIMM of the required specs just sitting on a shelf, I popped it in. This was bought to upgrade the Unifi Security Gateway, which is an outstanding device btw, but I wanted to use DPI and IPS at the same time and on the Unifi, it restricted throughput to around 85Mbps on a 200/20 Virgin cable connection. Adding it to your system Adoption wise if upgrading from the USG, remove the cables to the USG , plug in the cables to the USG Pro, and reboot your cable modem (if you don't you will not be able to access Internet), then remove the USG from the Controller software, adopt the USG-Pro and it's done. The Noise issue: Not as loud as you may have read, OK you will read people say that this device is loud, its not, the fans just have a slight high pitch (like a mosquito), that can get annoying, its easily fixed with a pair of Nocturna fans that take like 2 minutes to install (undo a total of 7 screws and undo two keyed connectors and plug in the new ones and you're done, theres a Youtube video if you search). Anyway if the fans annoy you, replace the fans (they are available on Amazon) and the problems solved. Temperature wise on the original fans PHY 79c CPU 79c Board CPU and PHY 48 c With the new fans PHY 74c CPU 75c Board CPU and PHY 48c Performance I am currently running v4.4.16 dev and its fast with Deep Packet Inspection and Intrusion Protection System both working, and am still getting 222Mbps down and 21Mbps up on Virgin cable. Overall? This is a beast of a Router, the normal USG is fantastic, but the USG provides a 250% increase and you can upgrade the RAM from 2GB supplied, to 4GB. If you have already invested in the Unifi system this is a definitely a worthwhile purchase, the fan upgrade is a worthwhile addition as the router will run cooler and the noise will be less annoying.

Présentation du produit : Le routeur est tout en métal, parfait pour dissipation thermique de l'équipement. On a aussi un ventilateur qui fait son travail. Les personnes qui cherche le silence passe votre chemin. je vois plutôt ce genre d'équipement dans une salle serveur pas dans une chambre ou bureau. Le produit est rackable avec la fourniture des vis. La configuration s'effectue depuis le logiciel unifi qui faut télécharger depuis le site du constructeur. il faut un ordinateur allumé en permanence si on veut avoir les statistiques des connexions. astuce : le logiciel unifi peut être installer un serveur synology avec docker. (très bon point) La grosse force de la gamme d'ubiquiti unifi est vraiment le logiciel unifi. on peut administrer le routeur, les switch et les points d'accès wifi depuis un même panneau de contrôle.

Ich habe schon sehr viele Router ausprobiert, von ganz billig bis hin zu teuren Profigeräten. Aktuell benutze ich den Ubiquiti USG-PRO-4 Unifi und ich bin total zufrieden. Bemerkenswert ist hierbei, dass der Router nicht nur für Profis oder kleine Unternehmen interessant ist, sondern auch für den Privatanwender, der gerne ein Profigerät besitzen möchte, jedoch nicht so erfahren ist, um ein Gerät per Terminal zu programmieren. Der Unifi-Router lässt sich, dank der kostenlosen Controller-Software, kinderleicht einrichten und mit weiteren Unifi-Geräten kombinieren, um ein komplettes Profi-Netzwerk zu errichten. Jedoch sollte der Privatanwender darauf achten, dass das Gerät an einem Ort verbaut ist, wo Geräusche nicht so eine große Rolle spielen :-) Er ist aktiv gekühlt und das hört man nun mal. Er ist nicht wirklich laut, aber im Büro dennoch ungeeignet !!! Wie ich den Router nutze: WAN 1: Telekom Glasfasermodem (200MBit Download / 100 Mbit Upload) WAN 2: Unbenutzt LAN 1: Office/Privat LAN 2: Video (CCTV) An LAN 1 und LAN 2 hängt ein Ubiquiti US-24-250W Switch und ein Unifi Access Point Der Unifi-Controller ist auf einem Synology NAS über DOCKER installiert und läuft absolut stabil ! VPN: VPN nutze ich sehr intensiv für Windows 10, macOS und IOS (iPhone). Jedoch gibt es hier eine Einschränkung für den "Privatanwender": Wer sich nicht mit dem Terminal auskennt, der kann nur PPTP oder L2TP nutzen. Alle anderen VPN-Arten sind nur über das Terminal zu programmieren. Laut Ubiquiti wird dies aber noch geändert bzw. ergänzt. Fazit: Der Ubiquiti USG-PRO-4 ist nicht nur unschlagbar günstig sondern glänzt auch mit einer umfangreichen Ausstattung und Benutzerfreundlichkeit. Ich kann das Gerät bedenkenlos empfehlen !

Ottimo prodotto della Ubiquiti, facile da installare e configurare. Fatto il reso dopo poco per upgrade a UDM Pro che gestisce anche il sistema Protect.
