Can I use this in my dishwasher to replace the plastic silverware holder?

That's what I was looking for when I bought it. I measured a space on the inside of my small dishwasher's rack, then searched amazon for some kind of stainless steel basket with side hooks that would fit that space and hang into the inside of the rack. I was frankly surprised to find one that works so well. Tip: Run the basket through a cycle to wash away any manufacturing residue before your first use. I've had mine for a couple of years, no wear, no rust.

is the hook big/wide enough to hang on the sink divider?

The hook is not large enough for a sink divider, it will fit over the rim of a sink dish rack. I hope this helps!

very small holes on the bottom.Holes on the side are actually larger. Actually the unit is small but it doesn't rust.
