The reviews are legit... this is awesome!
My 7mo puppy is 40lbs of pure energy. I was looking for something that would hold her attention & keep her from being bored without just gnawing on a bone. This is the perfect stimulation for her! I also like that I don't have to worry about sharp edges anywhere on this toy. I purchased the XL last night & put it together out of her sight. This entailed simply opening the outer package, then pulling a netted bag out of the center of the log; this bag contained six squirrels that I cut out of the bag. There are four offsetting holes in the body of the log, with five if you count the larger hole at the top. I put all of the squirrels back in the log & introduced her to it so that it was more intriguing than just seeing squirrels piled up next to the trunk. She immediately went for it, grabbing one squirrel after another. She first played with them by the head or tail, so she got extra excited when I showed her that the bodies squeaked. They get strewn everywhere as she roots them out, then she sticks her nose in the log & tosses it around, prancing over to me to show that she found all the squirrels. The individual squirrels are also exciting to my puppy, & it's funny to see her play with one then realize there's another in the corner to play with, then the log, then another squirrel she hasn't played with in 2mins, & then another, & so on, ad infinitum. Sometimes, she takes a squirrel & brings it to me, stuffing it in my hand or on my lap so I can toss it to her. After a while, I put them back in the log, & the cycle starts again. I like to leave one or two stuffed in the middle & not poking out of a hole so that she has to work a bit harder to get them out, & she loves it. That means that I love it, since I can get work done & don't have to worry about my fur baby being bored & destructive. Speaking of destruction, my only complaint is that the squirrels aren't exactly durable. Within the first 3mins one of the squirrels lost a tail & its hair on top. Today another one kept its tail, but is also now bald. Given how much my puppy loves this toy, it's not enough for me to deduct a star. I don't know how long the trunk & the rest of the squirrels will hold up, but so far, I'm incredibly pleased. My puppy is too, as it was the first thing she went looking for after our morning routine/to start her playtime. I rarely write reviews, but this is one item that surprised me with how well it works; I readily recommend it to anyone with a fur baby! UPDATE JUNE 2025: More than a year later & these are still going strong! Sure, I've sewn a neck together & searched for a tail to sew back on, but I still have all the squirrels & the log is holding up. These days I'll hide a treat or two in it so the fun lasts longer & she has to root out the squirrels & figure out how to remove it, but she still plays with it on her own frequently!

One of the best
My golden retriever and cocker spaniel are loving the chipmunks. Those little guys are built tough to survive the tug-of-wars. Their tails are super strong. I'm impressed. When I stuff the chipmunks back into the log, the cocker has figured out how to get them out, though her head can get stuck and the log roams around standing on her shoulders. One of the best toys I've gotten for each/both.

Squirrels are EVERYWHERE!!!
But I don't even MIND that I find the six squirrels that stuff the ginormous version of this toy ALL over the house--or outside. I bought this a few weeks ago for our almost four month old German Shorthaired Pointer puppy. She LOVES it--and in a house FULL of dog toys (I mean--it really IS ridiculous) she goes back to this one over and over. She really likes when I play with her with the toy--squeaking the squirrels and then throwing them so she can fetch them. Sometimes she brings them back--even mastering carrying two at a time, which I thought impressive--or sometimes she wants to play keep away. It's great that you can stuff the plush tree trunk over and over and over--and put other toys or a treat or two in there besides. I haven't had to wash it yet, but I think it will hold up well. I like that you can get replacement squirrels too--the first couple of days two of the six squirrels went missing--but they resurfaced. I bought the Ginormous size because more is---well, more. I liked that it came with six squirrels (so it wouldn't matter so much if she tore up or lost a couple of them)and the larger one was only a few dollars more than the next size down and had twice as many squirrels. It was less than $18 at this writing and qualified for Amazon PRIME shipping (almost immediate gratification.) Normally I buy plush toys for the dog at yard sales for a buck or two--but I'd purchase this toy again without hesitation. If I had to pinpoint one concern it might be that the squirrels are not very big. It's fine right now, but when she's a bigger dog--they look like she could swallow one. But I am trusting that the dog toy design people have considered this potential hazard. Also, one of the squirrels now makes a slightly weak squeak compared to the others, but almost NO squeaky toy can stand up to vigorous chewing forever. And if they all quit working I can just buy more squirrels! I shot a short video of my puppy playing with this toy. The footage doesn't do the toy justice. It's 97 degrees outside right now and neither the dog nor I feel like running around in THAT heat. But I'm going to try to include the footage because she does the typical animal shake with it. And she's beautiful. Get this toy. I highly recommend it. update: 03/28/2013--Dog is a year old now. We still have this toy and the squirrels--largely intact. A month ago she did rip a tear between two of the holes in the plush tree trunk. However, a needle and thread fixed it. I've looked back at some of the negative reviews about how this toy didn't last 10 minutes with certain dogs. My dog is a bird dog and is, of course, supposed to bring you game that is in unmarked condition so you can eat it. She DOES occasionally tear up toys (most often, the toys she destroys are specifically "Dog toys" that were supposedly designed FOR Dogs. The squirrel toy is still going strong (after I fixed the tear--mainly so that it didn't invite her to make it bigger.) Let's face it--SOME dogs tear ANYTHING up--and I feel for you if your dog is one of those. We had a playdate with a friend's German Shepherd this morning, and not only did that dog take my dog's new tennis ball (oh, yeah, one of those designed FOR dogs--with cute little paw prints on it) and then just SIT on it so no one could throw it/chase it any longer--she also then proceeded to chew it in half. Again--the DOG-specific tennis ball did NOT hold up like a regular tennis ball. No biggie--we have hundreds of tennis balls. But that dog had some amazing jaws. Know your dog and make your purchases accordingly. I think the interest factor of this toy (toys within toy) keeps her coming back. I'll put it for a few weeks and then get it back out and she loves it all over again.

HIDE A SQUIRREL LOG DOG TOY FOR THE WIN - BUY THIS NOW!
We started off purchasing one of these logs with the squirrels for a new puppy. And we also did purchase a couple of refill squirrels packs (3 extra squirrels each), but have never had to use the refill squirrels. We have since purchased two more log sets with the squirrels for different locations, including our living room, bedroom, and we have a third one for when we travel away from the house with the dogs. To say our puppy loves his log would be a gross understatement. When he is not aggressively, pulling the squirrels out of the log and throwing them around him on the floor, he is often just resting on his bed with the log in his mouth making “ happy paws” like when a cat makes “biscuits” with his paws (see attached pic). Very often, he will just fall asleep with the log in his mouth, almost like using it like a pillow. He will sometimes try to take his log out with him when he goes outside, which then leads us to a bit of a standoff where we have to convince him to leave the log inside so we can go outside. It is his absolute favorite toy, and we could not be happier with this purchase. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Not super durable for a good chewer
My 11 week lab Charlie is obsessed with this toy! He loves the little squirrels and he mostly loves the log it comes in. As far as durability, Charlie has definitely been able to chew some pieces off of it but all in all it’s his favorite toy and it’s OK for the price.

Best toy ever, for them and for you
My old neghbor comes to visit with her little dog, and he LOVES THIS TOY so much! I bought this so he'd have something to play with when he's over. The dog comes in and specifically looks for this toy, and loves pulling out the little chipmunks. He is squeeker obsessed, and the chipmunks all squeek! Its fun to throw them in different dirrections, and have him attempt to collect them all which he places in a little pile. We had a bigger version for our dog, when he was still alive, and he also loved it.

Interesting Toy, Tree is not Durable
My 7 month old puppy, who is small at 18 lbs, loves the squirrels and plays with them a lot. However, she chewed a hole into the tree shortly after she started playing with this toy. Since this toy is so interesting to the pup, I wish the tree was more durable. The squirrels are holding up much better. Fingers crossed!

Ótimo para cães pequenos
Meu cachorro amou. O brinquedo é muito fofo e bem acabado. As tortilhas que vêm dentro são pequenas, se o cachorro for grande é bom supervisionar para não correr o risco de engolir.

Awesome Play Value - Great Interactive Dog Toy
We first saw this Squirrel Tree at one of our friends homes and or dog loved it so much we had to order one for her. This dog toy is best for smaller dog breeds. Our cockapoo is 12 pounds and it's perfect for her. The squirrels are fairly small and have a squeaker inside them. I would be worried that large dogs might swallow the squirrels. The tree/log holds all the squirrels and has holes on the top and sides to allow you to fill the tree trunk up with squirrels and play hide n seek or tug of war with your dog. Our dog even likes playing with the tree trunk just by itself. In addition to the squirrel that come with the toy you can insert other plush animals and even hide treats inside the trunk. This squirrel log toy keeps our dog interested and intrigued while playing. You can see her trying to figure out how to get the squirrels out and find our where we hid her treats. Overall we like this dog toy a lot and would recommend it to most dog owners. For $38 the price is reasonable considering the play value and number of pieces. I would say we were a little disappoint in the first one we received. The base was not sewn properly and the cardboard inside was crumpled. Our dog chews through the base in a matter of a couple days. We received a replacement toy from Amazon and the second one was sewn properly. It's been a couple weeks now and our puppy hasn't been able to chew through the bottom and still likes playing with her squirrels every day. Great toy for pert owners and would make a great gift. Highly Recommend!
