Really impressed with this book
Such a useful book for anyone whoโs into strength training. Got this book in order to choose excercises to incorporate into my workout routine - the muscles worked are clearly illustrated for each excercise. Also the effect of different positioning of elbows, wide/narrow grip is explained, so are potential injuries etc. Itโs the fourth edition of this book and it shows. There is just the right anount of information - not too much, not too little. Also the illustrations are great. For the money this was a steal.

Knowledge is Power!
They say that "Knowledge is Power" and with "Sports Training Anatomy" that's exactly what the author gives you.I came back to strength training in April after being away for almost 25 years and while I still remembered many of the exercises I used to do in my twenties I couldn't remember exactly which group of exercises were for what.At this point I have to say I am extremely grateful for all the advice given to me by Michelle, the senior trainer at Bridges Gym, as well as a few of the regular members, who have all contributed in some way to my muscle building/weight loss program, but I'm sure I would still be confused as to the vagaries and actual workings of what and how had I not bought this book. In many ways it has become "my bible for a new body",a reference book I refer to continually, either for reassurance that I'm doing an exercise correctly to hit the right muscle or muscle groups or before I alter my training program in any way to make sure that any new exercises are still hitting the same muscles, only from a different angle. The authors superb, anatomically correct drawings, which strip away the skin to show every muscle, ligament and tendon, to show in clear detail exactly what muscle your working and how, primary and secondary, during specific exercises and there are dozens to choose from whether you prefer machine work, free weights or both.By careful study you can avoid wasted energy and effort by doing different exercises that actual work the same muscle groups. This can also prevent over-training and injury. Each section of the book is clearly labelled and includes stretching and injury prevention work.Several members at my gym have already seen and bought this book and I'm sure that more will follow. All in all an excellent book that's good for beginners and experts alike.

Studying this book helps you to visualuse exactly what is happening with your muscles, connective tissues and bones when you lift which for me helped a lot with mind muscle connection which is often difficult to master. Totally recommend this amazing book.

A must have fitness guide for average gym rat
This book has quickly become an essential part of my workouts. It is well-structured, making it easy to navigate whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refine your training techniques. One of its strongest points is the clear, detailed illustrations showing exactly which muscles are being worked in each exercise. This visual approach not only makes it easy to understand but also helps with proper form, reducing the risk of injury. I appreciate the chapters dedicated to common injuries and the variations in technique based on different body types. The language is easy to understand, making it a great resource for those looking to build a solid foundation in fitness. I come back to it every time I want to create my new workout routine or when I have a small injury. Overall, this is a fantastic guide for anyone looking to start or refine their fitness journey. A must have for any gym enthusiast, highly recommended!

EXCELLENT reference book
I am a relatively experienced gym-goer - been training regularly for about 15 years and I consider myself knowledgeable on issues relating with weight-training. I still found this book very useful in giving me a better, more professional, insight into how different muscle groups respond during the execution of different variations of exercises. It even helped me realise that some of the routines that I switch to now and then did not really maximise the effectiveness of my workout as they did not exactly target the fibres I thought they did. All in all, a MUST for anyone who starts or is thinking to start weights training - it will save you developing an awful lot of bad habits (be it poor posture, poor execution or suboptimal use of your workout time). Also, the book gives very useful instructions on stretching routines - which again is a good idea to follow and get used to them from early on as they WILL save you injuries later on. For more experienced lifters, well my opinion is that it is still a useful reference book. You will of course probably find out that you know most of the exercises cited in there - but again the focus is not as much on teaching you new routines, but explaining in full detail what happens "inside the box" when you execute these routines. Unless you have physio training, you are unlikely to have seen this information before at this level of detail - I hadn't. All in all, a good investment.

Very informative book with helpful and detailed illustrations
This book is relatively easy to read and understand. The instructions for each exercise go straight to the point. The illustrations help give the reader a better idea on the proper form for each exercise and which muscles are used. I also found these additional features both interesting and informative: 1) The book discusses potential injuries and how to avoid them. 2) The book also explains how genetic features such as arm length and thickness of the rib cage can affect how an individual does specific exercises, such as the bench press.

Great way to learn muscle anatomy and exercise form at the same time
I owned the first edition of Strength Training Anatomy (blue cover) for nearly 15 years and I've been recommending this book to my clients for that long as well. I decided to pick up the new 3rd edition (red cover) to update my library and also to write this review. This book's concept and contents have been imitated many times, but Delavier's is the original and the best. In a nutshell, Strength Training Anatomy is a book of expertly drawn illustrations of the human body (over 600) performing weight training exercises. The primary muscles being worked are colored in red and clearly labeled. The bones, muscle fibers and muscular attachments are also beautifully illustrated. The book is divided into seven sections: Arms, Shoulders, Chest, Back, Legs, Buttocks and Abdomen. No space is wasted with introductions - the book jumps right into arms in the opening pages. A page is devoted to each exercise, and a small amount of text accompanies each illustration, explaining proper form and giving additional tips or precautions. Sidebars show exercise variations, start and finish positions and additional details (such as deep muscle anatomy with the exact muscle tendon insertions on the bone). The length is 192 pages, so it's not overwhelming - it's very digestible, yet it's also very thorough in terms of the number of exercises covered. All the major and important barbell and dumbbell exercises are included. In addition, you'll learn a variety of cable exercises and a handful of common and useful machine exercises. I don't think there's any reader from any demographic or experience level that won't benefit from owning this book. It will be appreciated by all ages and by men and women, especially since both male and female models are used in the illustrations. For beginners, this could be a training instruction "bible" for learning how to do the exercises properly and understanding exactly what muscles are working. Some people might suggest this book is only suited for the beginner, but I think advanced trainees and even fitness professionals will find this book valuable as a reference guide and may even want to keep it on their shelf within arms reach. This material is not just for bodybuilders, but as a bodybuilder myself, I think there is another potential benefit of this book that I haven't seen anyone else mention. Bodybuilders need to develop the ability to visualize muscle actions and learn how to enhance their mind to muscle connection. Studying the drawings and looking at the muscles engaged, the direction of the fibers and where they insert and attach could be a great tool to help with these mental skills. As for the 3rd edition, there is new material in this update, including much more content (it's longer, with more exercises). There are also new sections on stretching and avoiding common injuries. The publisher, Human Kinetics consistently puts out some great titles, and this is among the best of them. The book quality is excellent, including the cover, binding, paper, and again, the illustrations on every page are fantastic. The author is clearly a skilled artist who also has a medical-level understanding of the human body. Potential readers should know before buying, that this book does not contain workout programs - it focuses solely on individual exercise instruction and exercise anatomy. That doesn't detract from the value in my opinion, it actually helps keeps this volume concise and focused on one thing: strength training exercises and anatomy. On that note, again, this is not a text-heavy book and while you do get an explanation and illustration of each exercise, you don't get in-depth written details on biomechanics and muscle actions. You're mainly getting exercise instruction and muscle anatomy lessons. Also, this IS an anatomy book, so if looking at body parts and human anatomy bothers you, then you might want to take a pass. (All body parts are depicted, in places). In summary, this book deserves its 5-star ratings, and its sales and longevity in the fitness book market are not surprising.

Useful, well-conceived resource
Excellent book with informative content which has enabled me to improve and diversify my workout safely. While I'm no expert in the content area, nothing struck me as "bro science". I'm already looking at the author's other offerings.
