can light be cut to make it smaller?

The light is a sealed unit. If cut it would have exposed wiring possibly leading to a short. Mine fit nicely under the hood adjacent to the prop rod holder.

How much heat can the led strip withstand underneath the hood with a large engine that generates quite a bit of heat?

Good question!I can only speak from my experiance with this. I've had mine installed for about 9 months so far and it still lights up everything as it did on day one in my '21 4Runner 6 cyl. Not yellowing from heat and the light doesn't appear to be degrading, as far I my uncalibrated eyes can tell.
