Fred Herzog: Modern Color

Wonderfull! A beautiful book in excellent shape though the bookseller said it was “good.” Not quite. It is in excellent condition and one more fine book for my photography collection. Herzog’s color work is well represented here. I also ordered the Herzog Black and White volume from the same bookseller. It is equal in all ways to the Herzog color edition.

Yeah, if you're into photography get this book by a master of street photography. High quality printing, nice size, a definite photo book you display.

A gorgeous book, with many fine prints. I ordered it despite it saying "German Edition" in the Amazon description, because I love Herzog's work. Luckily, it is entirely in English.

With Prime delivery the book arrived overnight in perfect condition. It’s put together well and at this price it was a great bargain compared to what other photography books of this quality cost. The photos were wonderful and they can easily stand along side any modern day digital photos. There was no photoshop or Lightroom in Herzog’s day and to see how well he cropped and composed these photos is something to recognize. This is on my coffee table along with other photography and art books and I’m sure I’ll go through the pages again and again. Really, I can’t speak high enough on how good this book is, the cost, the quality, the photos. It’s all been a treat!

The very best color street photography of a city before development. This book made me rethink color photography.

I feel so bad. I saw this book offered in my recommendations for some time now, but never pulled the trigger. Then a couple of weeks ago, Fred Herzog died, which let to a long thread on a photo site that I read, where many fans of the author were singing his praises. Several of the participants gave this book high Marks, so I ordered it. Why did I not have this book sooner? It is terrific! In the modern day world, (technically) perfect color photography can be achieved at will. Looking at the photos in this book will remind those of us that started shooting on color film how "perfection" is only one part of the picture (pun intended). These images would never be accepted by the pixel peepers and post processing experts, yet they are great. The short comings of the medium ('50s, '60s,...film stock) do not reduce the value of these images. The compositions, the juxtapositions, the timing make this a street shooting text book. The use of color, from a time when B&W rules is like looking at a time capsule. Most images are annotated with a date which puts everything in context... the cloths, styles, buildings. If you like street photography, get the book.

Excellent book

Describir el trabajo de Herzog no es muy sencillo. Se le suele describir como "pionero" de la fotografía en color, yo lo veo como un fotoperiodista en color. No es Ernst Haas que ha llevado el color al límite, la fotografía de Herzog es mas cercana al trabajo de Vivian mayer. Fotos espontáneas, evocadoras y ejecutadas con maestría. El libro está muy bien encuadernado, las reproducciones son impecables y en general es una gran compra por lo que ofrece. El precio no hace justicia a lo que se recibe. La única objeción es que el libro tiene algunas fotos que simplemente no están a la altura del resto, simplemente distraen la genialidad de las demás. Altamente recomendable a un precio ínfimo.

Un livre absolument magnifique, tant par la grandeur de l'artiste, Fred Herzog, la beauté époustouflante de ses photographies, que par la qualité incroyable de l'édition, la présentation des oeuvres, et pour un prix tout à fait raisonnable pour une telle qualité. Editeurs français prenez en de la graine ! Absolument incontournable pour les amoureux de la photographie, de l'art, de la Beauté.

Wonderful overview of Herzogs work.

This superb book celebrates the quiet genius of photographer Fred Herzog. Over a number of decades, Herzog, a German-born migrant to Canada, captured the changing nature of life in Vancouver. Modern Color captures a comprehensive range of his work, and at the same time shows the changes the city experienced during that time. His clever use of colour becomes apparent in a careful study of the images, and notably the colour red features a lot, making it hard to look through these pictures without sometimes thinking of Nicholas Roeg's film "Don't Look Now". Accompanied with some thought-provoking essays on the nature of colour photography, Herzog's importance and the changing nature of the Vancouver landscape, this really is a book you can get lost on. The images from the 1950s through to more recent times show the beauty in everyday settings and situations and at the same time capture a world that has gone for ever. Mesmerising.
