This Amscope microscope arrived safely and was well packed. While this has two eyepieces it is not a stereo microscope but a binocular microscope. Having two eyepieces allows for a much more comfortable veiwing experience. A binocular microscope also has a larger field of view so you can examine a lot more of your specimen at once. These types of compound microscopes can achieve higher resolution images and they're much easier to focus since you are using both of your eyes instead of just one. The double-layer mechanical stage helps to keep slides securely in place. This compound microscope has multiple lenses: the objective lens (4x, 10x, 40x, or 100x) is compounded (multiplied) by the eyepiece lens (typically 10x) to obtain a high magnification of 40x, 100x, 400x, and 1000x. It also comes with a 25x eyepiece lens taking the magnification all the way up to 2500x. At the higher powers, the light isn't really bright enough so I tend to use it up to 1000x which is plenty powerful. The lowest power for one of my specimens (amber with an insect in it) was actually too powerful but being a good quality device you can remove and add other objectives. I bought a 2x lens and with the 10x eyepiece, I got a magnification of 20x which was perfect. The corded 5MP CMOS camera upgrade is great (the standard camera is 3MP I think). Linked to your computer via USB 2, the images are good and sharp. The camera sits in one of the two eyepieces leaving the other free for direct viewing. The datasheet only mentions Windows so if using a Mac, go to the Amscope website to check for drivers. The Amscope software is excellent allowing both still and video capture. Other adjustments can be made, such as exposure controls including auto exposure, colour adjustment, white balance etc. There is also a measure option to measure your specimens which seems to be accurate. One of the best controls in the software allows for image stacking, drastically improving depth of focus and sharpness of your specimen. The microscope comes with a quality plastic cover for when it's not in use, essential to minimise dust on the objectives. A great microscope at a great price. Recommended.

I am very amazed of the build quality of this microscope. A standard hemocytometer fits perfectly on it. I have been using it for manually counting cells using a hemocytometer with the purpose of differentiating between healthy and dead cells with trypan blue dye. It is very good for this purpose. This microscope also comes with a small and protective dust cover. It is quite small but works well for my intended use. Cells are easily observable at 10X magnification. I have it on my lab counter top which measures 40 inches from the floor to the working space and you can still use it without any problem. This is in case you want to place it on a high bench working space. The LED light source will eventually wear out but I am planning on giving it maintenance with our department's yearly microscope inspectors. Overall, very well made and it rivals other competitive brands such as Olympus for its use in cell counting.

I have only had this product for a couple of days, and I am absolutely over the moon about it. It was very easy to set up, and the picture quality is great for the price! I was actually very pleasantly surprised with the camera quality. I had trouble setting the program up at first, as I kept downloading the wrong software (Oops, my computer is windows, not linux). I also had an issue where the camera preview was just black, despite the software recognizing the camera. I took it out, waved it around, and it came to life, so it very well might have been the angle I had it placed at. These were silly mistakes I made, so I thought I'd share here incase someone else made the same silly mistakes. It was definitely worth the purchase, and I encourage any beginner, college student, or even post-college student to get it!

Outdated components and low quality software and resolution on images. Does a decent job if you use pitnyour eyes to the optics, but not if you are using the software to view the slides on the computer. That reduction in quality reduces the effectiveness as a teaching tool.
