Does is scan the new real id cards?

Yes. It scans all State IDs, Driver's Licenses, Real IDs, Military IDs and Canadian IDs + Health Cards.

Can this scanner check for fakes? Or does it just scan ids?

Short Answer: It will catch "some" fakes but not all fakes. This is true of all ID Scanner which just read the barcode and/or magnetic stripe. Long Answer: The Primary purpose of an ID Scanner is to warn when an underage ID is scanned which turns out to be the number ONE cause for citations. In a busy retail environment, a clerk/server is motivated to rapidly complete the sales process. In this environment, it is easy for a new or tired clerk/server skipping important steps or making calculation errors. The Secondary purpose of an ID Scanner is to document the ID checking process by recording the ID data, ID status (OK, under21, etc.) with a date/time stamp provides an affirmative defense. Several states have affirmative defense legislation which helps defend an organization's liquor license. Fake or Altered IDs All ID Scanners which only read the barcode or magnetic stripe will help detect some fake or altered IDs. Just having one will cause some people to think twice about presenting such an ID. The ID scanner will help detect if the printed date of birth or expiration date has been altered using ink (e.g. changing a 3 to an 8). In most instances, the ID scanner will read the unaltered date encoded on the data stripe and display an underage/expired warning. Another possibility is the encoded data stripe doesn't match the printed data on the front of the license (e.g. John Smith is printed on the front, but Mary Jones is encoded on the stripe). In this case, the ID scanner will NOT produce a warning but an operator who is cross-checking the displayed versus printed data should notice the discrepancy. However, fake IDs are like counterfeit money in that if the person creating them has sufficient skill and resources, it is extremely difficult to detect without proper investigation resources. Merchants serving age sensitive products are expected to make a reasonable effort when checking IDs and using an ID scanner is a significant indicator of such effort. That is why many states have affirmative defense legislation for merchants who use an ID scanner. Do you make a camera to be added to the unit when the id is scanned

I do not know of any camera to be added to the unit. However, the unit is very effective in scanning identification cards from multiple US states. It even states if the person is underage or if the ID is expired.

Does the scanner need to be plugged in at all times or can it be used without being plugged into the wall?

I first received a device without software.. After calling customer support (not Amazon) they fixed me right up!! 5 stars on customer tech support!! Will be upgrading to the top model soon... with tech support like that I'll keep buying their stuff!! Device wotlrks 100% and exceeded my expectations.

Customer service was great

Edited due to Tokenworks reaching out. They did a fantastic job at putting us at ease about the issues we had with this model. I will say this is the barebones model if you are looking for extra feature amazon might not be the place to buy this from. The new "IDVisor Smart V2 ID Scanner" that we got instead has been great and I truly recommend this model.

Great product

The scanner came in 2 days and was very easy to set up. I cant believe we didn't own one before. It makes checking ids virtually fool proof and is very user friendly.

Amazing ID checker

The first week we saw four people tag our place of business and actually saw them come in our door. We scanned the culprits but the times did not match. We were on local news displaying how well it worked, but still cannot match times. Love that it gives you a list of patrons and tags those who are not allowed back.

Using in liquor store. Had it for a week now, no issues. Quickly scans cards and keeps info on screen for about a minute of so. Still figuring out all the options it has and how to use them. It offers two age verifications for alcohol and tobacco purchases. Bottom line is that even a monkey can use it which is important should you hire a monkey or similar.
