Old-school shine, manly smell
This stuff is terrific. A great alternative to Brylcreem for those seeking a truly authentic, old-school pomade. While Brylcreem is an oil (main ingredient is mineral oil, albeit in a "cream" format), Yardley brilliantine is primarily petroleum and paraffin. The result is that, in the jar, this pomade is a little sticky compared to Brylcreem. But the good news is that it's not sticky to the touch once it is worked into your hair and it's not hard to wash out. Technique is simple but important. Take a fairly small amount-- not too little, you do want to get the shine, the hold and the smell-- and rub it between your two palms, actually rubbing the pomade into your hands a little. Then rub your hands through your damp hair (take a few seconds to really massage it in well, especially if your hair is thick). Comb into place and you've got yourself a head of hair that is shiny and smelly (in a good way) and easily managed. Nice, high shine and pleasant, masculine smell-- this is probably what Cary Grant' or the young Prince Phillip's hair smelled like. Not smell-it-across-the-room strong but strong enough so that someone standing a couple of feet away will probably catch a good whiff of your hair. And strong enough that you can skip a day of shampooing without getting that stinky men's-hair smell. If you have a partner, she/he will love this stuff, will have a field day touching and smelling your pomaded hair. Do it for her/him.

Classic and refined
I thought to leave a review and give credit where it's due. This has a classic scent that is pleasant and not over-powering. I normally have rough hair and have often opted for pomade to provide a smooth appearance and better hold. Yardley Brilliantine is a step above anything I've tried thus far. I've tried many pomade styles including original pomade formulas from the 30's and have largely avoided the newer goopy mess. Yardley provides a decent hold and isn't some mess for "bed-head" modern styles. As mentioned, the scent is great but the selling point is how it smooths my hair into a refined appearance with a nice finish. With a fine-tooth comb my hair comes out looking well-groomed with a low gloss appearance visible only at a close distance, it's not the high gloss/shiny nonsense that makes most other pomades shimmer. This is in-between with a low-gloss making your hair appear well conditioned.

I love it
This is the best hair product ever. You only need a little bit. I have very frizzy hair and itโs the only thing that works

It tames my wild and smells good
It tames my wild hair and smells great! Yeah it a little heavier than some but it keeps the hair I'm place.

pleasant product that works
I love how this Brilliantine tames my unruly hair - some of which is wavy, some straight as an arrow, some tightly curled. Talk about a bush! I use a good dab - enough to spread over the insides of my fingers - to distribute through all the layers of my thick hair, then finish by smoothing the top layer with what's left on my fingers. This works better than Alberto VO5 - it isn't as heavy. But it does as good a job of taming the mane, but without weighing it down completely like the Alberto does. And goodness knows, it is more pleasant a scent that the other!

Forget the Hairspray - - Use THIS!
My barber introduced me to Yardley's Lavender Brilliantine when I said after a haircut that I don't want spray anymore; I never use it at home; and don't like it. So, he produced a jar of this, and want an incredible experience it was having Yardley Lavender instead of spray. Brilliantine is like pomade (which can give a matte finish), it's a gel that you warm in the palms of your hands, then very lightly apply to the top surface of your hair once the hair is in place the way you want it. It gives a light hold and a touch of shine that is very natural and not greasy in the slightest (as long as you don't over apply). The uneducated could call this "goop" which it could be, but the secret is in rubbing your palms together for a couple of seconds and then just applying it to the surfact of your hair all over with the warmed Brilliantine in your palms. You could work it through the hair also if you like separation. AND WHAT A SMELL! The fragrance of lavendar is fantastic. Lavendar is not sweet at all. This and the Yardley Gentleman's Brilliantine, which I have at home, (which has a somewhat different scent) are my hair control products of choice. It is a classic product that will last for a long time. Worth the money? Absolutely. Part of the pleasure of getting ready in the morning is putting this on. I look forward to it. I really wish other men would try it. They are missing out.
