An immersive journey through Indiaโs most enduring garment, told through its weaves, regions, and people, and an authoritative portrait of the sari as Indiaโs most expressive and evolving textile form.? The sari is the most representative apparel of India that has intrigued men and tempted women all over the world. Worn in a variety of ways, the sari is a fabric-length of varying densities in its body, borders and end pieces often woven by combining a range of cottons and silks in colors and patterns that are constantly evolving. This book is an exhaustive overview of this fascinating unstitched garment and a cutting-edge documentation of design and all that supports it socially, culturally and economically. Travelling district by district, village by village, Saris of India explores an entire spectrum of traditional weaver and printer settlements in fifteen sari-producing states of India. Review: Dictionary of Sarees! - Wowww... I honestly don't have words to describe this dictionary of sarees. Hats off to the author, photographer, editor, publisher. People who likes to grab knowledge on Indian tradition and sarees, this is a must buy. There are 270+ pages (its a big book). This book has information about types of handloom sarees by state, weaving techniques, saree draping style images with instructions and lot more.. Even if you don't want to read entire book, that's fine. It's gonna be a great addition on coffee table. I would highly recommend to buy this book! Review: Large book - This is not your standard sized book, but rather a coffee table display sized book. Absolutely beautiful. I hesitated to remove the plastic, as it arrived in such pristine condition. I'd been waiting for the price to come down, and this was well-worth the wait. Kudos to Rta Kapur Chishti for a comprehensive view of the spectacular saris of India.

Beautiful and informative
Rta Kapur Chishti's "Saris of India: Tradition and Beyond" is a gorgeous coffee table book that describes sarees and variations from the regions of India that traditionally wear draped clothing. Chishti gives background information on the styles of sarees produced in the region at the various weaving centers, and includes photos of many of these textiles types. The author also gives tying instructions for many of the traditional drapes of the various regions, including those of working women (fishers, farm laborers, flower sellers), dancers, and Brahmins. A heavy and large book, "Saris of India" may be difficult to store on edge in many bookshelves. But that is a minor quibble, as the book itself is beautiful enough to leave out on a table. Recommended for those interested in traditional sarees, textiles in general, and information on the weaving centers of India.

very detailed research, illustrations could have been bigger and more visually pleasing
a very well researched book but disappointing for a non-sari wearing person, who wanted more emphasis on illustrations
