This guide includes all 39 species of North American hawks and other diurnal raptors, including eagles, falcons, and vultures. Color paintings and photographs show each species in various color morphs and plumages, which are aso described in detail. Review: Buteos are tough - I live in South Texas on the Mexican Border and see a great many hawks and falcons including Buteos. For whatever reason, some of these buteos are difficult for me to identify. I'm sure this is because of the plethora of morphs and juveniles but I'm also sure that my thick-headedness is also a factor. Anyway, I've been looking around for a good reference to help me out and find that, of all my birding books, this book has helped me the most. For me, at least, excellent drawings are more helpful than photographs although good photos are also helpful. Clark and Wheeler's 'Hawks of North America' has both. In addition the organization and logic of this book is quite good. I can recommend it. Ron Braithwaite, author of novels--'Skull Rack' and 'Hummingbird God'--on the Spsnish Conquest of Mexico Review: An Excellent Guide to the Raptors - This is an outstanding book. The plates are excellent, and the species accounts and range maps really round out the book nicely. What I think should be said is even though the photographs are fine, this book should be purchased with "A Photographic Guide to North American Raptors" by Wheeler and Clark. In my opinion, this book adds to the field guide by supplementing its photographs with the ones from Wheeler and Clark. They are larger, and show more detail, and when combined with the field guide plates, you have a combination that can't be beat. If you like raptors, this is definitely the way to go.

Best raptor field guide out there.
I realy like the semi hard back design of this book. It is almost like a hard back book. I especialy like the fact that instead of paintings like most other books this one uses actual photos of the birds. I have been using this book for some time now but had to replace it due to the old one getting submerged in water. This guide along with several others are always in my vehicle for use when I spot a rare hawk that I need help identifying. If you like hawk watching this is a must have book.

Very useful
This is a surprisingly simple and elegant tool for use in identifying various birds of prey, and learning a bit about them as you go. I have found it to be quite helpful and have enjoyed using it.

A HUGE asset for any birder or nature aficionado
“Hawks of North America” (Second Edition) Peterson Field Guides Compiled by William S. Clark and Brian K. Wheeler The diurnal raptors – Hawks and their kindred species present unique identification challenges to birders. Success requires a tailored and studied approach. This field guide is “just what the doctor ordered”. The introduction is actually a well-developed “primer” that prepares the birder very well to tackle the task of identifying the raptors in a relatively easy and efficient manner. The plate pages and species accounts are extremely well-presented thus enabling the hawk aficionado to make rapid progress. I will add a simple observation. In any given area of North America the number of species likely to be found on a resident basis, is relatively few. Thus if a birder will thoroughly familiarize themselves with the raptors just in their home area - perhaps even choosing the most common to study in depth and use as a “reference species”, they will soon have developed a mental framework that is of great help in identifying raptors in other areas and/or migrants passing through their “home skies”.

Color pics would be better
Good info, and drawn plates are in color, but all the actual pics are black and white and tiny, blurry.

Hawks guide is good
lots of color pictures perched and in flight, underside and top of Bird, most are drawlings but detailed full bird draws, and in with the description some real life pictures does do eating habits but does not go into detail, no nesting,or nests or eggs, or number young, or mating seasons VERY good at telling between adults and juviniles everything is layed out all together, you dont have to keep flipping pages for information Used book, was in great condition and would NOT hesitate to buy used again.. would prefer it

Excellent guide for beginning raptor birders...
I have a passion for hawks and falcons and I wanted more information on raptors than what was available in the general field guides (Sibley, National Geographic, Kaufman, etc). Peterson's - "A Field Guide to Hawks of North America," features bird profiles - using both paintings and photographs, including field marks and maps and provides an good foundation for the beginning raptor birder. If your interest continues to grow, I would recommend adding Brian Wheeler's "Photographic Guide to Raptors" and Ligouri's "Hawks at a Distance" to help you develop more confidence in identifying raptors in your area. If the raptor jones hits you hard - the only relief I have to suggest is to get a copy of Brian Wheeler's Raptors of North America series (available in Western and Eastern versions).

An excellent guide to Hawks
This is an excellent guide to North American hawks. The hundreds of colour illustrations and photos and detailed descriptions give much more information than the basic Field Guide to Birds. A great addition to my reference library.

Texto descriptivo: Descripción, Especies similares, Comportamiento, Medidas...
