Product Description . desertcart.co.uk Review Even though one can view each segment of Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colours trilogy on its own, it seems absurd to do so; why buy the trousers instead of the entire suit? Created by Kieslowski and his writing partner Krzysztof Piesiewicz for France's bicentennial, the titles--and the themes of the films--come from the three colours of the French flag representing liberty, equality and fraternity. Blue examines liberation through the eyes of a woman (Juliette Binoche) who loses her husband and son in an auto accident, and solemnly starts anew. White is an ironic comedy about a befuddled Polish husband (Zbigniew Zamachowski) who takes an odd path of revenge against his ex-wife (Julie Delpy). A Swiss model (Irène Jacob) strikes up a friendship with a retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who eavesdrops on his neighbours in Red. The trilogy is a snapshot of European life at a time of reconstruction after the Cold War, reflected through Kieslowski's moralist view of human nature and illumined by each title's palate colour. On the DVD: The DVD set has numerous extras spread throughout the three discs; the end result is a superior collection. Each disc has a short retrospective, culled together from new interviews with Kieslowski's crew, plus film critic Geoff Andrew, biographer Annette Insdorf (who also does the commentaries), and fellow Polish director Ageniska Holland. Producer Marin Karmitz also reminisces about the experience. There's an exceptional effort to show the magic of Kieslowski (who died two years after the trilogy) through a discussion of his various career phases, interviews with the three lead actresses, four student films, and archival materials including simple--and wonderful--glimpses of the director at work. Excellent insight is also provided by Dominique Rabourdin's filmed "cinema lessons" with Kieslowski. Without viewing any of his other films, this set illustrates the uniqueness of Kieslowski. --Doug Thomas P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); Review "One of the very greatest cinematic achievements of the last few decades" -- Geoff Andrew, Time Out See more Review: Amazing trilogy - I've been trying to change my movie habits from watching the usual stuff Holywood churns out to trying to watch more highly acclaimed foreign films. I was recently recommend The Three Colours Trilogy. Wow! What an amazing trilogy. The whole trilogy is a masterclass in storytelling by the writer/director. Although it does seem like it first, all three connect with each other, which makes the whole story even more watchable. The first film Three Colours Blue is a hard watch, but I advise you stick with it because the acting and writing is superb. The second film Three Colours White is probably my favourite out of three, it probably more lighter in tone and at first you sympathise with the main character, but as the story goes on, my feelings for him changed, eventually finding him a bit a cruel. The third - Three Colours Red - ties all three films together in such a way it causes you to look at your own life. If you are looking for something different to watch, and don't mind subtitles, then I cannot recommend this trilogy highly enough. Review: One of the Best Arthouse Offerings Ever! - This is a truly amazing set of DVD's. It collects the famous Kieslovski trilogy "Three Colours Blue, White and Red" in one set (finally). "Three Colours" is a truly amazing journey. These colours come from the the French flag and embody the revolutionary vision of Freedom, Equality and Brotherhood. This symbolism is brought forward as themes in the movies. Also, the actual colours feature quite strongly in the films: in "Blue" the character played by Julliette Binoche visits the pool regularly for the purpose of weeping underwater; in "White" you are constantly confronted with the sound of flying pigeons (evoking white), and red features constantly in the third film also. These DVD's have been available separately for ages now. But the individual DVD's don't have the list of goodies featured in this special edition. I have been drooling over the Region 1 offering at desertcart.com for ages now. Also, the pricing on the individual DVD's seem to be much higher than you would have to pay for this set. The depth of the stories, characters and emotion in these movies are almost unequalled in anything else I have ever seen. It comes highly recommended, and in this special collection format it is an absolute must.

Three colour trilogy
An absolutely great series of stories that all come together eventually.

Not optimised for widescreen
These are some of my favourite movies of all time, so I was very disappointed to find that the DVD is mastered for 4:3 TV (not anamorphic), and with a strange half-way zoom which means you can't even use the linear zoom to fill the entire width of the screen without losing detail or the subtitles. Why they have cut off material on the sides when the original film is shot in 1:1.85 is beyond me! You may want to wait for a Blu-ray release.

Good cinema at its best
This is cinema! Three precious pieces of cinematic art. The three of them are exceptional movies, but my favs are first and third. If you enjoy American action movies, probably you will not like these ones, but you can try with something different which, maybe, will make you think beyond easy violent films full of special effects, empty dialogues and stupid repetitive clichés. Kieslowski is a genius, one of the best directors ever and he knows how to show human nature as it really is, in a few words, in long silences, in poetic and touching images decoding the three colours of the French flag for liberty, equality, and fraternity. The beautiful score plays a prominent part as in all his movies. A piece of advice: watch them in order - blue-white-red -for they are interconnected and the last scene in Red is essential to understand the whole. This is cinema at its best!

best box set in English so far
Still apparently no sign of a upgraded HD remaster of these amazing films so this box set is as good as we can hope for in English. Sound and picture quality are OK but not HD, maybe 720 at best. Comes in an unexpectedly lovely attractive triple cardboard box and artwork. I know Polish but not so good with French so i need plenty of subtitles because these films are in French and Polish. I just hope someone remasters these wonderful masterpieces in HD soon.

Subtitle fault on Red
There is currently an English subtitle fault on the RED disc of the 4 disc set. The subtitles only come up if you go to Chapters and play from that. We returned three sets before working this out. The 4th disc has a subtitle option and is no trouble. The 3 films are magnificent, worth the nuisance.

I've watched it several times, and will keep coming back to that brilliant trilogy. Kieslowski is the Master. A must have for those who love insightful European cinema.
