This easily navigable resource provides 125 swatches of the most recognized and widely used varieties of fabric to encourage consideration of not just their aesthetic appeal but also their structure, feel and weight. Natural fabrics such as cottons, silks, wools and linens are included, as are artificial and synthetic fabrics like nylons, polyesters, microfibres, metallics and soya fabrics, and fabrics made from alternative plant fibres like bamboo and hemp. With information on fibres, basic construction of fabrics, weights, construction, and weave comparison, the book will help student fashion designers to make informed textile choices based upon an understanding of raw materials together with the processes that make up a fabric. The book will be useful for anyone who works with fabrics and is the ideal companion to Fabric for Fashion: The Complete Guide. Review: Pricey but worthy - I really liked the swatch on this book and now that I have it I wondered how I was going to do before. The alternative would have been to visit the local (but far away) fabric shop and inquire within about different types of fabric, possibly extending the visits to many many times. This book does. It go into the deepest details of fabric making, however is quite comprehensive and the possibility to touch and feel different fabric does make the difference. Quite pricey but worth investing the money if you are interested in expanding your knowledge about fabric. Review: A must have book for anyone studying or with keen interest in fashion or style - A must have for being able to name your fabrics and learn what is what ... a great present for a young person studying fashion as well as an older person studying personal styling ... an expensive book but not when you consider the work that has gone in to making it... it's worth it. Contains loads and loads of little samples of material... lovely to read and feel!

Just for the swatch samples, worth it
When it comes to understanding textiles, touching and feeling the material is everything. When the book talks about the material and its properties, having a sample right there, touch and feel it. Your brain connects all the dots. It has very good coverage on natural and man made textiles as well woven and non woven. Every time I come across a fabric that I felt I wish there is a sample, I refer to this book. Highly recommended

Could do with a few more additions
This is a useful, but slightly overpriced, book. It's a good reference but it could do with a few more additions of commonly used fabrics to make it even more helpful.

Great sample book
A very good source of fabrics, especially for beginners who are struggling to find out which fabric is which and what those are used for. Worth every penny!

A God send. Spend the money, get the book. You'll be glad you did.
Spend the money, get the book. It's definitely worth it. This is an amazing reference tool. I'd put off buying it for ages due to the price. So glad I did. There are so many swatches and an invaluable description about each, i.e. washing, construction etc. Once you have it, you'll never need to buy another again. Can't recommend this reference book highly enough. The swatches are of a big enough size that you get a feel for the 'hand' of the fabric but small enough that they fit many different types within.

Lovely resource. Not only useful but lovely in its own right
I bought this along with the Fabric for Fashion book. What a fantastic combination. I can now be much more confident when choosing fabrics based on sewing pattern recommendations. I didn't even know what a lot of them were before - challis, charmeuse, eyelet, etc????

Really good book for all Fashion designing students
It's a must have book if you want to touch and feel the fabric as it's difficult for one to buy a sample of all kinds from the market.

Excellent book!
I have been looking for a fabric swatch book for quite some time. I sew apparel for myself, and buying fabric online can be a challenge if I don't know exactly what I want. This book gives you actual fabric swatches to feel, and it also gives you the information about each fabric such as what it can be used for. I have been looking at purchasing it for some time, but I was having a hard time justifying the price point when I couldn't see the book. I am so glad I gave in and got it, as it is exactly what I was looking for. 100% recommend for newer sewists just learning about fabric types.
