Great product and easy to install!
First let me talk about installation. It was a pain in the butt! You are asking then, why did I say "easy to install"? Well, when I actually followed the directions (directions?!?, who knew?) it took me about 15 minutes. If you start out following the directions, it is super easy. Before I bought this unit Im bought a unit that was only 60mm. It didn't work. This unit is sleeker looking and also is universal, what a great concept. Once I got it installed and got everything programmed it worked great! It comes default with sounds all the way on but it is pretty easy to mute it (again, in the instructions). I wish it were as easy as waving the card in front of the lock but they added an extra step. Still, a time saver when trying to get in the house with four kids. Make sure you don't lock your bottom lock as well. Bottom line, if you are looking for an rfid door lock, this is your product!

Great Lock, Ease of Use, Tricky to Install
I bought this lock to replace a top-rated digital keypad door lock deadbolt (Sunnect AP-501). The Sunnect was heavier and, I believe a more robust lock than this Samsung. I am not sure if heavier means it's stronger though; we had someone shoulder our door in and the cage portion of the Sunnect Deadbolt was destroyed (since Sunnect is apparently out of business - they aren't answering their phone or emails - I couldn't replace this part). Although lighter, the Samsung seems to have hard metal where it counts. Daily Use Compared to the Sunnect, the Samsung is nicer to use on a daily basis. For example, instead of sliding a metal plate up to punch in numbers on an awkward keypad, the Samsung has a digital touch pad which makes entering the code faster and more convenient. Installation The hard part about the Samsung is the installation. The metal base-plate which is installed on the inside of the door has a mechanical geometry that causes the motor (that unlocks the deadbolt) to be stressed if it's tightened too much. It needs to be adjusted just right to maintain the (relatively) friction free sliding of the deadbolt to the lock and unlock position. This could be improved in the design if the interior base-plate were stronger and less susceptible to bending, which contorts the mechanical action of some metal pieces that work together to rotate the deadbolt. Also, compared to the Sunnect, the interior panel could be more robust in build quality - it's plastic unlike the Sunnect, which was made of hard metal. On the other hand, the unit hugs the door nicely on both sides - better than the Sunnect did. The Alarm on the Samsung is louder than that on the Sunnect. I would highly recommend that you look into Door Jamb Armor (Armor Concepts) if you are concerned with individuals kicking or shouldering-in your door. No matter how nice your lock/deadbolt, if the wood surrounding it (the door and door jamb) is conventional, nearly anyone can break open your door with a hard kick or firm shoulder.

Great Idea. Doesn't last.
Extremely poor quality. The concept is great. As others stated it was not the easiest installation but I was able to get it installed. I loved having the multiple profiles. I loved having both fobs and codes. I just replaced the battery after 3 years. I knew going into it this would not connect via WiFi or Bluetooth but that's fine because of everything else. This gets one star for one reason, it has weathered so poorly in 3 years that it is almost unusable. The plastic is so scratched up that you can barely make out the numbers day or night. The only reason i can use the keypad is because i have a feel for where the numbers are. We do not have kids who abused the device, just my wife and I. I plan to reach out to Samsung to see if they will do something for me but have doubts given the 3 years that have gone by. I would not buy this. As another reviewer said - this should have been glass. I can't imagine how fast this deteriorates in its' true commercial application.

Poorer quality than the SHS-3420 that it replaces
I've been into locks since the age of five (yeah, so I'm a nerd) and I'm an engineer by trade (ok, you knew I was a nerd already and you're still reading so I guess that's OK) and I've worked with locks and alarms and computers more than my fair share. In summary: this Samsung deadbolt does not meet my expectations because it is a functional downgrade from the previous version. Please bring back the SHS-3420. That was a better lock in every aspect except for cosmetics. It had a substantially stronger deadbolt assembly, a less stylish albeit more functional button on the exterior faceplate to activate the lock and engage the deadbolt, an actual dedicated interior lockout switch to disable electronic operations unlike the horrible multifunction lockout button that this model uses, lack of a faux locking cylinder protrusion that begs for an exterior attack, and most critically, the motor on the old one was substantially stronger than on this lock. Let's look at these "downgrades" one-by-one: 1) The deadbolt: As any locksmith will tell you...a deadbolt lock must lock the door and do it well. All of the high security ANSI grade 1 deadbolts out in the marketplace use a strong and beefy fixed backset (non-adjustable) deadbolt. Why non-adjustable? Well, it's better to have a fixed bolt that does the job well with more metal than an adjustable bolt that must accommodate both standard residential and commercial installations and incorporates less metal and less mass. The old SHS-3420 required you to actually order the right deadbolt for your application and it closely resembled the Medeco deadbolts in heft and construction except with the locking springs removed to make the travel easier for the electric motor. Medeco makes a fine bolt and I was happy to see Samsung model (if not copy) their design after this proven, quality American product. The deadbolt on this model...ahem...sucks and reminds me of something more reminiscent of Defiant quality(to the non lockphiles out there, this ain't a compliment). 2) The exterior multifunction button: The exterior button on the old Samsung deadbolt served the dual purposes of wake-up and deadbolt locking. If the lock was unlocked, then pushing the button would lock the lock. If the lock was locked, the button would wake-up the lock to enable the code entry and card reader functions. On this new lock, there is no exterior button but only the touchpad. Since the touchpad consists of twelve discrete pressure sensing areas on an unmarked black plastic faceplate, one has to guess as to where the buttons are and poke until you hit one to activate the wake-up or locking function. All glamour aside, the old-fashioned button works 150% better in reliability than the new setup. 3) The importance of having a disable switch: The old lock would allow you to be flip a dedicated switch on the interior and disable all electronic lock functions, leaving the manual interior thumbturn the only way to lock and unlock the door. Logically, this means that you could leave the lock in the locked or unlocked state without any exterior means of changing that state. Samsung poorly decided in this latest model that the only feature worth preserving was maintaining the lock in the locked state; the multifunction button does not allow you to maintain the lock in the unlocked state. This means that any passerby could press on the screen and inadvertently lock your deadbolt when you mean to keep it unlocked (let's say you want to disable it temporarily for a visitor). The only way to disable the lock from exterior locking is to remove the battery which is a very nonelegant solution. 4) I realize that this lock design was meant to accommodate a manual override keyed cylinder, however this model does not have that feature and leaving this vestige is as ugly as having those extra blank buttons on your car that are meant to accommodate the optional premium features that you were too cheap to buy. 5) The weak motor: this is absolutely the most serious flaw of this lockset. The torque output of this motor is substantially less than the model it replaces. Why is this important? Well, for one the high quality earlier deadbolt was actually easier to throw than the lousy one that comes with this one. So the job is tougher and they put in a cheaper motor? What kind of upgrade is this!? No wonder the other complaints on this lock are about the finicky mounting plate screw tightening! This motor is underpowered for the application and that, simply put, means that it is more likely to leave your lock stuck in either the locked or unlocked position. If you are on the inside, you can use the manual thumbturn to open the lock, but if you are outside your house with this lock stuck in the engaged position with no other means of entering your house, I guess you are left with the options of waiting for thermal variations to warp your door and frame assembly into a favaorable random state or you would have to break down the door or a window to gain entry. This is unacceptable for a homeowner to have to break into his own home due to poor lock design. This lock is less reliable than a $10 home improvement store lock! I would strongly advise against using this electronic deadbolt, whatsoever, because it is unreliable. Go buy the earlier model. If anyone is wondering if I work for a competitor and have a biased review, let me offer that I'm suggesting that the same brand Samsung SHS-3420 (2-3/8" backset) is a much much higher quality lock and it doesn't even take an engineering degree to make that determination. I mean really, who releases a new product is worse in just about every possible way than the predecessor? Samsung, do you really want to follow Microsoft's product strategy?
