David Lynch writes and directs this adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel. Set in the distant future on the barren desert planet Arrakis, aka Dune, where a precious life-enhancing spice is guarded by monster sandworms, young nobleman Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) leads his family and the native Freman people against the territorial designs of his family's arch-enemies, the Harkonnens. However, once on Dune, Paul discovers he is earmarked for an even greater destiny. The cast also includes Francesca Annis, Max von Sydow, Linda Hunt and Sting. Review: The best adaptation - Suddenly realised that this wasn't in my collection, so had to buy it. Still the best adaptation of the original book, IMO. If you haven't seen it and like the genre, you will love it. If you have seen it, get it for the memories. Review: Great film with excellent Picture quality (Blu Ray) and Dolby 5.1 option - An excellent film which has been much enhanced on Blu Ray with both very good picture quality and audio. I already have Dune on DVD but was disappointed with the Audio (Stereo). This Blu Ray release has Dolby 5.1 option and the sound quality, particularly deep bass sounds is very good (I do have a sub-woofer) and which was missing on the DVD release. The audio with the excellent picture quality makes this a very enjoyable film.

Dune
Dune is a sprawling, idea dense novel that mixes political intrigue, ecology, religion, and prophecy across many characters and subplots. This made it hard to fit into a conventional 2 hour movie. There are clear parallels between Dune and Star Wars, desert worlds, prophetic young protagonists, quasi religious orders with special powers, and galactic political conflict. Frank Herbert himself publicly expressed irritation at the resemblances, suggesting Star Wars borrowed elements from his work. Framing Star Wars as a “filmable short version” of Dune helps explain why Star Wars achieved immediate blockbuster success, but this parallel between these 2 films also explains which Dune is such a GREAT STORY ! Great classic film. Well worth watching.

epic, awe inspiring, visonary
i can't say how this compares to the frank herbert book but as a film it is awe inspiring enough in its own right. the production values are outstanding for its time and the acting power is stellar. every frame of this film looks amazing, so much effort has been put into this movie. in terms of ideas and outcome i would say that it compares very favourably to the lord of the rings and star wars. star wars in particular seems to owe a lot to dune, although some things are very different the world of dune is just as complicated and well thought out. there is a distinct touch of game of thrones to this story as there are families fighting against each other and the machinations are vast and sometimes ruthless. it is a brutal world, but fascinating to watch

Great Movie
What can I say. It's a DVD. It works so it's perfect. I love this film, even compared to the new versions.

Dune 1984 release
I would most likely have given more than 3 stars, but for me the whole thing was marred by the fact there are no subtitles, I have hearing problems and at times really struggled to understand the dialogue, visually good though

The movie is obviously awesome. Too bad that there are no subtitles in this DVD edition. This is the reason for 4 stars out of 5.
