So far, so good!
I've only managed to play this game for about 3 hours so far last night but I'm very impressed with everything I've done and seen. There are lots of things to get used to which are different from previous GTA games. I've read other reviews on here about people who hate the driving style and I'll admit, it takes a bit of getting used to but it's much more realistic that it's predecessors, requiring you to think more ahead when driving at speed and I've been able to avoid 2 police chases so far without much difficulty. I think, as in real life, some cars handle better than others and I found a car which looks like an M3 that handles really well. The behaviour of the people in Liberty City is great, behaving as you would expect people to rather than one dimensional cannon fodder. They get scared if they see you carrying a gun, they run for cover if you are firing near them. If you crash into someone while driving, they may get out and try to start a fight with you rather than fleeing at the speed of sound as in previous GTA games. I crossed the street early in the game expecting a cab coming around the corner to stop on a six pence (like previous games), but instead he hit my character. The driver then got out and started swearing at my guy, so after a short fist fight I acquired a few dollars and a cab to drive around in. It took me a few goes to get used to the combat system. The targeting system is a significant improvement as is using cover but I can't get used to having a separate button for melee attacks, keep hitting the fire button to punch people. The whole block/counter attack system seems needlessly complicated at this point, but I'm sure we will all get used to it. The cut scenes are excellent and it feels like a proper story is evolving but I'd recommend turning on the subtitles as the heavy accents of the some of the characters can mean you miss some of the things they say. I'm also impressed with using mobile phone as a way to kick start missions and stay in contact with characters as a way to gain access to extra abilities. I love the graphics, which are better than I expected. There are some fuzzy light effects which put me off at first and the way it is properly dark at night can take some getting used to but I think it looks a whole lot more polished and less cartoony now. The sound effects are spot on but I'm a little disappointed with some of the radio stations so far. I used to love the talk radio of the last 3 games but so far the new one hasn't made me laugh as much. Having a TV in your apartment to watch the shows is a nice evolution of the radio station content however. I'd like to see some additional radio station material available for download in the future and I'm hoping I can add custom music tracks to listen to (as in the previous games), which I'm sure is there but haven't checked for yet. I also haven't played the multiplayer mode yet but it does sound very good and I'm sure I'll enjoy playing it. The interface sounds a lot like the one I've been using with the most recent Burnout game, where you can jump right in from the single player game. There are lots of excellent little touches so far, an excellent story and I'm sure the game will continue to show off as I progress to the other islands and harder missions. If you liked the previous GTA games and are willing to accept that some game play aspects will present new challenges, you will not be disappointed.

Next-Gen GTA... ?
GTA 4. Possibley the most hyped-up game EVER?! IGN.com who hadn't given out a 10/10 score in ten years gave GTA 4 a ten. Did it deserve that score? Lots and lots of other critics gave the game the perfect score of 10/10. This suggests that it is the best game ever. It's not. And if you can get that idea out of your head - you will not be disappointed by GTA 4. Because it IS one of the best games available on the Xbox 360. I'll start with the story. No spoilers that you do not already know. Niko arrives in Liberty City to meet his cousin. And for something else too... I found the story to actually be quite interesting. Unfortuanetly the cut scenes don't always spend that much time on the main story. Most of the missions could be classed as "filler" in terms of story since only a handfull of them actually develop the main storyline. But it doesn't matter- its a game, not a movie. I found the story to be quite gripping but I would have liked it too be developed better. I wanted to know what Niko was feeling more often. Niko is a good character though, and probably the best the GTA series has spawned so far. The gameplay has been much improved. You can now take cover, and shoot from behind it. You can blind fire. With a rocket launcher. The shooting is quite enjoyable now and while its no Gears Of War, it could stand in for it if GOW decided to take a day off work. The driving has been heavily critised by the casual player. Personally, I think the driving system is the best I have ever seen in a game. I love the way that when you crash the car actually takes the damage where you crashed. Once you get used to it, the handling is excellent. The movement of Niko himself feels more weighty this time around. But again, I like this change too because it adds to the feel of realism this game has got. The mobile phone is a crucial tool in this game. You recieve mission objectives from it, and you also phone whoever your boss is after completing a mission. If you like interesting dialogue then you will love the addition of the phone. But if your an impatient 14 year old boy then you will probably not like this addition since when you are on the phone you cannot do anything else but walk around. You can also use the phone to call your friends and to ask them out for a drink. You can change the background on it and even the ringtone. My ringtone is 'lesbians'. So all in all, this is a great game. But if you want to buy it too just fly planes into buildings or to just generally mess about... maybe you should stick with San Andreas. But if you like story and good characters- then this is a MUST buy!!!

laslow saved this game from becoming a massive dissappointment
There are several reviews here that highlight an underlying disappointment that resonates throughout the game. No one has been able to put their finger on it but somehow they all seem to be playing the game with a serious face and not a massive grin. On some levels I would have to say that I agree with them. If looked at as an individual game it's nothing short of epic. The theatrics of the cut scenes, the graphics, the scale of detail throughout the city, the revised handling of cars, the ability to crouch behind walls and pull off various `rainbow six-esque' moves. Its all there and all of it fantastic, you are never lost for things to do in the new liberty city. So, on the whole it all seems brilliant, so good in fact that the disk hasn't left my xbox since the 29th of April, all of which is hooked up to a HD television making the game look even more spectacular. And yet still, I can't find anything wrong with it, but the disappointment still looms there. But then I realised that it doesn't really remind me that much Grand Theft Auto. Sure enough you can still pull people from their cars, beat the hell out of pedestrians and then with same sadomasochistic joy you can run them over, don't forget then being able to shoot a policeman...just because you can. Once again all of it is brilliant, the rag-doll physics when you run people over is disturbingly realistic and so is the damage cars obtain when you crash. But it's all seems very `un-GTA' if you will. Finally I've realised what it is that has left me disappointed with this game, it defies the very thing GTA set out to be in the first place, making crime funny. No question the game is fantastic and I will continue to keep it inside my 360 until I have completed it and play it day in day out. But the reason you bought the previous GTA's in the first place was to enjoy the hybrid of coke dealing, murdering, theft and prostitution with comedy game play and comedy car handling, and GTA IV simply isn't funny. The blood is too realistically coloured and so is the way its spurts from peoples heads when you shoot them. They've brought GTA too close to reality and that was the opposite of what its original purpose was, to be able to shoot someone and run someone-else over and find it funny. GTA seems to have lost its way. This is only in terms of the game play however, the radio stations are exactly how GTA should be, and seeing as Laslow has his own radio station, the game has been prevented from becoming a massive disappointment and just an underlying niggle.

GTA 4 A Victim of its own success.
Since I got this game I have played it almost non stop and am now nearly 50% of the way through the game, I feel at this stage that I can give some pretty sound advice on what you can expect. Firstly does it meet the extraordinary hype, no, well not in my opinion anyway. As I see it there are several problems; - The friends system, this is the one thing I truly dislike about the game. When playing GTA I do not want to have to go running around taking at least 5 people out on activities every other day so that they do not hate me. This is the case in GTA 4 where your 'friends' ring you asking you to go out and if you say no you get a big thumbs down and a less than happy text, GET OFF MY BACK! I dont play GTA to make electrical graphic friends, if I wanted to do that I would play the sims. A truly, thoroughly annoying inclusion. - Lack of interaction with buildings that was present in San Andreas, In San Andreas you could do things such as entering many buildings etc. In GTA 4 there seems to me to be less of this, you cannot for example enter the largest buildings or the statue of 'happiness' which I would have hoped would have been possible. It must be said the places you can interact with are pretty wow. - There are very few shops etc, for a city map this size overall has many, many less interactive locations than San Andreas. - Vast city small scope, this is again a bit of a step down when compared to San Andreas. For all intensive purposes it doesnt really make a difference which island you are on there seems to be no real difference. Other points of interest; - Cannot modify cars - Cannot modify appearance beyond clothes - Cannot purchase property - No airplanes for free flight around the city Please note these are not absolute facts but as I say I am halfway through the game with all islands unlocked and have not found the ability to do any of these. All of these points are really negativities that have been brought on by the pure brilliance of San Andreas and as a game in its own right GTA 4 would have been amazing. Now to how GTA 4 Excels, - Graphics, excellent, this is the step up I would have expected from the next generation of GTA - Missions, better than ever, yes they follow the same pattern but they always have. The game is so lengthy at this stage of play (over 20 hours) I had completed all the San Andreas missions. Some of the missions are truly huge taking as much as twenty to thirty minutes to complete, though they are not difficult so you are unlikely to die at the last minute and have to re-do 15 minutes again. - Car controls, a point of complaint for many is one of my favourite things. All the cars handle differently (and differently in different weather) and trust me some of the better cars handle superbly. I do not understand people who expect the equivalent of a toyota corolla to handle as well as a ferrari. Once you get used to the new driving it is better than ever. - Physics engine, this is great things such as falling off a high speed motorbike actually make me cringe from time to time. - The mobile phone, a super cool inclusion gives you so many options and things to do - Interactivity with objects, from throwing bricks to accessing the internet or police computer systems there is some amazing attention to detail that is worthy of applause - Police intelligence, where before they would walk blindly into your awaiting gun they will now climb ladders etc to get you - Police radar, well done rockstar In previous GTA's the only sure way to get rid of the police was the pay'n'spray now you can see what you have to do to get away all you have to do is do it Theres so much you can do with this game I could go on forever however for your sake and mine I'll end with a final bit of opinion. I must say that I am in the frame of mind that you should buy this game for the missions, story line and graphics and keep your old copy of San Andreas for the free roaming rampaging that so many GTA fans love. All in all four stars its just a shame it had to follow the brilliance of San Andreas. Oh as a side note to the reviewer who gave three stars and said they would give 8/10, 8/10 would infact be 4 stars, any easy mistake to make I just hope your not an accountant. Enjoy.

Rather good actually.
Firstly, I think the hype could really do with relaxing, because frankly it harms the product by setting people's expectations ridiculously high. This game neither solves world hunger nor will it make you irresistable to the opposite sex. It does, however, redefine levels of narrative involvement in video games bringing to the table plotting and characterisation not often seen in cinema, let alone video games. Niko's is, in particular, a spectacular piece of social observation, embodying society's vague disappointment with the modern age, and self loathing in his oh too clear knowledge on 1) how it came about, i.e. at the expense of those who cannot afford to keep up and 2) how he came to experience it i.e. through a process that no-one could be proud of. It is a brilliant example of the inevitable disappointment of the 'grass-is-greener' mentality which is so often optimistically ignored. The rest of the cast are (even the real so-and-sos) lovingly rendered and enjoyable to watch and interact with with hammy affectations of movement and speach adding to their vibrancy. On the technical side, I couldn't help but be genuinely impressed. This feels like an actual place. The weather is convincing, the people are varied and, well, human-like and the interaction with it all is of a higher calibre than I have experienced before. The fighting feels much meatier than in the past, well animated and genuinely quite visceral and affecting, especially during firefights. Subtleties in character animation means there is a definite emotional reaction to shooting someone or knocking someone out, further bringing weight to the virtual world. The driving is now much weightier and solid-feeling too, creating a very convincing illusion of a one and a half ton frame of metal with an engine and wheels. This game is an immersive, atmospheric, unique triumph and marks a definite positive event in the evolution of videogames as a medium. It is, however, a relative slow-burner. Whilst it does immediately kick off in style and carry on as such, it does take time to build momentum, giving the player time to grow used to the controls (particularly with the vehicles, which are radically modified from previous games). As an example, it is to San Andreas what Apocalypse Now is to Saving Private Ryan. Not as immediately bombastic but, in the end, infinitely more rewarding.

I don't know... I just don't know.
The most eagerly awaited game ever? Well it's certainly up there in the top five, rubbing shoulders with the Master Chief which ever way you cut it. Does it look amazing? Yes of course it does. More gritty and less cartoonish than it's predecessors, detail aplenty, pop-up and draw-distance problems controlled if not entirely removed, cars that look as good as a racing game, characters that look as good as a third person action game. It's all here. It looks and feels fantastic, but... If you've been there since the beginning there is just a tiny nagging feeling that past all the glitz and glamour, beneath all the media hype it isn't really that much of an advancement from GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. You see, when GTA III came along it replaced a crude but addictive top-down scroller. It took that world and used the newly minted PS2 to blast it into full 3D, defining that platform and ushering in the era of the sandbox game. As I stare at GTA IV in 36 inches of HDMI beauty I simply don't feel quite as excited as I did when I hit the streets of Liberty City the first time. There's a tiny voice inside me that keeps saying that all the glowing reviews in the mainstream media are only written because those reviewers weren't there to see how incredible it was when the series first went 3D. Struggling to come to terms with a form of media that they neither understand nor respect, they are only written because they feel they are expected to crow about how great it is. I try to put my finger on what exactly has disappointed me but it isn't easy. Perhaps it was the fact that Saints Row really made a feature of the car modifying thing, that San Andreas gave you a whole county to explore, perhaps I just like the playlist less this time or perhaps its just one sandbox too many? Don't get me wrong, this still beats most games by a country mile. The voice acting is beyond reproach, as are the character models, the level design, the cell phone system. In short, it oozes quality from every pore and yet remains a bizarrely muted experience. Of course you'll buy it. Everyone will. But twenty years from now, will we talk most fondly about this one? Or will it be one of the previous three?

Rocky start but it gets much better
I was expecting big things from this game and it doesn't dissapoint. When I first started playing I thought it had lost something in the gameplay, but how wrong I was. The more you progress through the game the more you realise just how many side missions there are. It seems at first to be quite linear but after a while when you have met various people and they appear in your phone memory you work out that all the side missions are accessed from your phone and not little icons on the map like previous versions of the game. A nice touch is the internet cafe where you can check emails, browse a make belief web (well funny), date girls (and men!!!), Buy cars from an autotrader type site among other things. This is where you find the equivelant of the old import export missions too. The detail of the vehicles and the whole city is amazing, however the actual graphics resolution is not quite as good as some other recent games. Dont let this put you off though as they are still very good indeed, even if you can only display 720p/1080i as is the case with older consoles. The vehicles handle differently than previous versions but not worse. They seem more realistic than before and won't screech round hairpin bends at breakneck speeds anymore, but with a little prectise you will get the hang of slowing down for corners. I really like the new driving physics a lot. Just jump in a Dodge Charger, sorry, I mean a "Dukes" and hammer the throttle into a bend and watch it drift leaving black rubber marks and tyre smoke while the body rolls around like an old yank should. Or you could try a top heavy Escalade and watch it lean over while the front end looses traction on the tight turns. The main character Niko really comes to life and has more depth and personality than any gta character before him. Any gta fan giving this one a negative review surely has not given the game a chance or played long enough to give an informed review. Nothing has changed except maybe the exclusion of planes (I loved the dodo which CAN be flown indefinately). The game just got better and will live for a very long time before we see anything better.

Could this game be any better?
The short answer to this question is no. Whilst there is always room for improvement in a game, you just can't fault R* for their choices in developing this game no matter how hard you try. The lead character Niko Belic is arguably the greatest protagonist a computer game's ever had. People naturally point to the actual character himself as a way of justifying this type of praise, but equal credit for this fantastic character goes to the actual depth of the game itself. Niko has been - as with EVERYTHING else in this game - generously fleshed out. Its not just that he's such a cool guy, which he is, its that he says so much, he does so much, he's involved in so much. Everyone knows the main thing wrong in previous GTA games was some aspects of the gameplay which were incredibly simple and outdated. Its all very well flying a harrier, mowing cops down with a combine harvester or owning a scarface type mansion. But the simple things like shooting and driving in the previous GTA games were, well, a little lacking to say the least. Half the time there was no rhyme nor reason to your death, other than bad luck because of the aiming system. With GTAIV however, both the driving and the shooting has had a complete overhaul - you are in complete control. The cars are alot more realistic which will put off some of the lesser skilled gamers - go play tetris for the rest of your life if you can't adapt to it I say! The shooting in the game has taken heed from titles such as Gears of War in that it employs a cover system so that you can judge when to shoot the enemy depending on a number of factors. Both these areas of development improve the game immersurably & add some much needed substance to the franchise. Also, you now have a customisable mobile phone which you are free to use to contact anyone you've phoned throughout the game, this is useful in so many ways, mostly for arranging leisure activities such as shooting pool, bowling, going to a strip club or taking one of your many girlfriends out for a meal. Taking your friends and associates out gifts Niko with different assets depending on the NPC, these range from a colleague who'll meet you anywhere at anytime to sell you guns, to a girlfriend who will help get the cops off your back in those more lairy GTA moments. The leisure side of things is a welcome relief from the constant slog of doing missions, its nice to inwind & go watch a comedy show or play some pool from time to time - or why not go home and watch tv in your safehouse? Thats right - you can watch tv too! The missions are generally the same as the GTA games before, although they do seem more original than they actually are due to the new shooting/driving system. Lastly i'll mention the quality of the other characters in the game. I've never seen a cast of characters like this in a game, or anywhere close. Almost as commendable as the improved gameplay is the dialogue & characterisation. You will really feel like you're taking part in a (top quality) hollywood picture on more than one occasion, due in no small part to the superb scriptwriting. The only negative thoughts i've dared conjour up during my GTAIV experience so far has been, "what have I done to deserve this fantastic game" & "I almost don't want to play anymore as it will make the game end sooner". It really is just too much, and too good.
