Today, the works of Vincent van Gogh (1853โ1890) are among the most well known and celebrated in the world. In Sunflowers, The Starry Night, Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, and many paintings and drawings beyond, we recognize an artist uniquely dexterous in the portrayal of mood and place through paint, pencil, charcoal, or chalk. Yet as he was deploying the lurid colors, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms that would subsequently make his name, van Gogh battled not only the disinterest of his contemporary audience but also devastating bouts of mental illness. His episodes of depression and anxiety would eventually claim his life, when, in 1890, he committed suicide shortly after his 37th birthday. This richly illustrated introduction follows Vincent van Goghโs story from his earliest pictures of peasants and rural workers, through his bright Parisian period, to his final, feverish burst of creative energy in the South of France during the last two and a half years of his life. Good overview of his work
Nice overview of his work and life. A good size, fast delivery and good conditions. It makes you search for more of his life, since not all works are here but it contains the main ones. I like the quotes by him, on each page. What are misunderstood genius.

Very interesting and well illustrated
There is still the debate about Van Gogh's health, was it epilepsy, bipolar disorder or episodes brought on by absinthe. There is still the stigma of mental illness in our society, so to go with epilepsy (as thought by the unqualified doctor all that time ago), seems to be the correct diagnosis for some. The author of this book sides with the epilepsy theory, which might not agree with everyone's beliefs. But what matters is Van Gogh's artwork, and that would be what he'd have wanted to be remembered by. Like all of Taschen's 'Basic Art' series, the book is very interesting and well illustrated.

Brill but...
Brilliant book, great illustrations, but...not the complete works by any means. The complete book is pretty huge! You will get a very good overview of Vincents' work from this one. Probably all you need.
