Perfect bedtime reading for an 8 year old!
My 8year old son has a predilection for action books, the more monsters and fights the better. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of these books too, but they are not always the most suitable thing to read before bedtime. Over the last two years we have sought high and low for 'compromise' stories. Those of a slightly more gentle nature that nevertheless tickle his fancy. The Queen's Nose has been our greatest success so far. The story is lighthearted and entertaining. There's magic and animals a plenty too. Best of all we have been able to have endless discussions about what each of us would do with our seven wishes. We have now branched out and bought some more of Mr King-Smith's books and can attest to the fact that they are all as good as this one!

A wonderfully imaginative and funny classic
This was one of my favourite books when I was 8 years old and has become the favourite now of my own children. 10 year old Harmony isn't allowed a pet of her own, her parents dislike them, so she spends her time imagining that every person she meets is an animal - her mother's a tubby pigeon, her sister a siamese cat. But them exotic Uncle Ginger arrives home from India and gives Harmony a magical coin that she can wish anything on... magic and animals, fantasy and a heroine who's hilarious and ambitious. Just brilliant.

An old favorite
I truly love everything about this story. It's all the fun of a magic story but without (???????) the magic. My sister loves this story so much that she actually ordered a coin like the one that Harmony discovers on eBay! This is a story that reminds us to be careful for what we wish for, and also emphasizes the importance of family. Harmony comes to realize that she has perhaps not appreciated her family like she should, and I love to see how, in the end, she is able to see how much they truly love and appreciate her for who she is.

Dick King Smith Classroom Collection
I have been collecting these for my classroom. We have a reader who visits 3X a week and reads another DKS book. So I like to keep same author books as my students quickly get turned on to the author and want to read more.
