Great little home scanner. Worth the price if you have a lot of scanning to do. Back up to 5 stars
My old laptop died that I used to use this scanner on with no issues (I think it was originally Windows 7 that was upgraded to Windows 10). My new desktop has Windows 11 and each time I want to use the scanner, I have to re-install the TWAIN software to get the scanner to work as the software 'forgets' what scanner is attached to the computer. After I finish using the scanner and some unknown amount of time passes, the software 'forgets' again what scanner it is connected so and I have to re-install the software the next time I want to use it. Totally unacceptable and no workaround seems to be available from Canon other than to keep reinstalling the software each time I want to use the scanner. I would have returned the scanner if this has happened from the word go. Put the rating back up to 5 star after I deleted the Canon scanner software on my computer and re-installed it completely. Voila, no more losing the connection between the software and the scanner. Yeah, for all the years I've been using computers, I should have thought of removing and re-installing the software. With that issue gone, it's a really nice scanner especially for scanning significant numbers of pages. I was looking for a printer so I could put several boxes of old engineering paperwork into electronic format. So far, I've been really impressed with the R40. I can scan with my current printer but it's sloooooow, noisy and less than stellar quality. Definitely not a candidate for what I wanted to do. Setup was easy. You have to download the software which is 525 Mb. I missed the note on the download page directing US customers to an download link. My download speeds weren't great but it did come down. Installation went with no problem. Pros 1. Fast. The first time I ran about 4 or 5 pages through it, the scanner was set on 200 dpi greyscale and the pages just whipped through the feeder. I thought both sides could not have scanned but everything was there. Even on 300 dpi color it's pretty fast (max is 600 dpi). Compared to the scanner built into my printer, it's another whole other level of speed. I can't prep the next batch in time to keep up with the scanner. 2. The scanner says it will rotate pages into the correct orientation and overall it does a really good job. I finally found the section in the scanner software that allowed me to rotate a page that scanned in the wrong orientation (having it worked into a right mouse click with some other options would be useful Canon). I want to do some more testing but a couple of tests I did with flipping some pages or putting all the pages in upside down had them all come up in the right orientation (as mentioned, I had some early problems with some scans but that doesn't seem to be an issue now). 3. Handles flimsy magazine paper with no real problems. Ragged edges don't appear to be a problem but any amount of glue from the backing left on the pages and they don't feed properly causing a jam. Any amount of glue is bad. If you run your fingers down the edge and can feel bumps, remove it, trim the edges, whatever. If you can see a flat line of glue, trim it off. Sometimes it will feed, sometimes it won't. 4. Compact, nice small size. With the document feeder installed and extended as well as the output tray, it's about 12" high by 15" deep by 11" wide. Remove the feeder the retract the tray and the dimensions are about 7.5" high by 6.5" deep by 11" wide. 5. All necessary cables are provided. Small point maybe but there's nothing more annoying than getting a new toy and finding out you need to go out for a cable. While many of use have boxes of old cables, that doesn't mean we will have the right one. 6. Return shipping is included if I need to return it or don't like it, I don't think that's going to be an issue. Return shipping can be a nasty surprise. 7. The power supply handles 100V to 240V, doubt I will take it on a trip overseas but it's a nice feature to have. Cons: 1. The software version of the manual is useless. I had pages that were upside down and do you think 'rotate' or 'rotate pages' came up with useful information? If you said yes, you be wrong. 2. I finally figured out how to scan and then get the file written to my hard drive by setting up a one-touch button. Before that, sometimes when I hit 'finish', the file would write to my hard drive, other times it would not or I had no clue where it went to. Drove me crazy at first and really slowed down the overall speed. 3. Does an okay job on pictures but if I was going to scan a lot of pictures, this would not be the scanner I would pick. I didn't take anything off my rating as that was not my purpose in buying this scanner but I'll note it. 2023 comment Last point I'll add is when we came back from a 6 month cruise I decided to save all the daily cruise reports just in case I wanted to go back some time and see what we did on some day. It didn't take very long to scan that many pages, even less when I changed from full color to greyscale which was more than adequate for what I wanted. Full color looks good but does make some big files though that's not much of an issue given the multi Tb hard drives that you can get now.

Great Scanner
This doesn’t print — it’s strictly a scanner — but it’s excellent for documents and very fast. Works well for photos too, easy to use, and definitely recommend it.

Ludicrous Mac support
I have a Mac running the current MacOS, Ventura. This OS has been around since October 2022, not exactly new by OS standards. According to the Amazon product page, this scanner "includes easy-to-use CaptureOnTouch scanning software (Win and Mac)." This short quote contains multiple lies. First, the software is not included. No big deal--the Setup Guide in the box told me to get software from the Japanese Canon web site, which merely asks me if I want Win or Mac. After downloading, installing, and a complete fail, it turns out that the software I downloaded from Japan does not work on Ventura. Canon, how hard would it be to update the Japanese site with a sentence pointing out this major problem? It turns out that the US Canon site has software that they say works on Ventura. I downloaded and installed it. It didn't work, probably because of files left over from the wrong software. I looked in the Canon forums, where a guy from Canon named Arthur wrote that I have to uninstall the wrong software; however, Arthur doesn't bother to tell me how many files there are, what the filenames are, which folders they are in, or how to do that; their installer doesn't uninstall like well-written ones do. Then Arthur wrote to install the most recent software. That didn't work either. I then spent more than an hour on the phone with Kevin in support, who was very patient and walked me through many uninstalls, reinstalls, and restarts, many of which were in conflict with the installer instructions. After all this, some scanning was possible! However, the scanner remains unusable and will be returned because it will only complete a 3-page job after 2-3 restarts of the scanner and 2-3 restarts of the software, with the same two error messages recurring.

Huge Time Saver for a Busy Office
I run a small CPA firm, and during tax season we scan a large volume of client documents every day. The scanners built into our multi-function printers just weren’t cutting it—especially when dealing with mixed document sizes and the need for speed. The Canon imageFORMULA R40 has been a game changer. It scans quickly, efficiently, and with excellent image quality, even when feeding stacks of documents that vary in size and thickness. The automatic document feeder works smoothly, and we’ve had far fewer slowdowns and rescans compared to our old setup. This scanner has easily paid for itself in time saved and reduced frustration during peak season. If you’re in a professional office that handles a lot of paperwork, this is a fantastic investment. Highly recommended.

Good, But Not the Best
If your scanning needs are like mine, I can quickly explain why I believe the Canon DR-C225 II is the best scanner for you. I’ve tested the DR-225, this Canon imageFORMULA R40, and the Epson WorkForce ES-400 II. Let me explain how I use a scanner so you can judge the relevance of my comments for your decision. I only use my scanner to archive (i.e., go paperless) and email hard copies of docs. Usually I scan a page or two, but sometimes I'll scan 500 pages or even more. All my docs go to PDF format. I rarely scan photos, but if I do, I’ll use the flatbed on my multifunction printer. (If I have lots of photos I use scanmyphotos.com. They are great.) I do not need wireless. You may think that you’re not going to use a scanner that much. I would encourage you to be openminded. Once you get it, you might use a scanner much more than you think you would. I started with these three scanners because they are in my price range, they are highly rated, and they use TWAIN drivers. (TWAIN drivers are a somewhat important consideration. I will explain why at the end of my review, in the details section.) There are two reasons I eliminated the Epson scanner. One is that both of the Canon scanners have the ability to automatically sense text direction and rotate pages so they are vertical. That means it doesn’t matter how you put the document into the automatic document feed (ADF). Put it in upside-down or right-side up and it still comes out right-side up. This is especially handy if pages are inconsistent, that is, if there’s an inadvertent upside-down page or two. The Epson does not have this capability. So you always have to put the docs into the ADF upside down, facing toward the back of the ADF. Another reason I eliminated the Epson is that it will not copy pages with Post-It notes. Both of the Canons and the Epson can detect double-feeds and you can turn this capability off. I turned it off because Post-Its will signal a double-feed and the job shuts down. Sometimes what I scan has Post-Its and I want them in the scanned document. Or, I will sometimes tape a small pieces of paper to a document I’m scanning. For example, I might tape small receipts, a clip of a spreadsheet, or a business cards to the back of a document. Even with the auto feed detection off, the Epson detected a double-feed and stopped scanning. Once I shut the double-feed detection off, the Canons scanned the pages just fine. Even if I taped an index card to the back. The Epson stopped scanning, even though I tried several times. (Note: I find the double-feed detection unimportant. I had my previous scanner for 9 years, scanned tens of thousands of pages, and just didn’t have double-feed problems.) Deciding between the two Canon scanners was a tough call. One minor consideration is the output tray of the R40. In my test of the three scanners, I scanned the same 300-page document that was a tough test. The doc had different page sizes, different thicknesses of paper, many pages had staple holes, some had Post-It notes, and so on. The output tray of the R40 and the Epson didn’t handle this challenge very well. The pages would clog up, collect out of order, or some pages would be pushed out of the tray. That’s not the case with the C225. I just didn’t have to pay attention to the scan - it just ran. My second reason for eliminating the R40 could have been a fluke. I installed the scanner software, ran it for a while, then a few days later I updated the software on my multifunction printer. When I tried to scan more documents, my computer could not find the R40 driver. I did not have that problem with the C225. So, I just went with the C225. I liked all three scanners. As I said, I’ve scanned a ton of docs over the years and am pretty well paperless. Over the years I have found that the decision-making factors I’ve described here are important ones for my needs. If they are for you, too, then I believe the Canon DR-C225 II is your best bet. DETAILS: I mention that the TWAIN driver is important, not a deal killer, but important. There seems to be some confusion on drivers based on other reviews, so allow me to explain. Drivers handle the interface between your computer hardware, computer software, and the scanner hardware. Through the driver you set the parameters for your scans (e.g., paper size, duplex or simplex scan, resolution, color, scan blank pages). All scanners must have some kind of driver. TWAIN and ISIS are the two industry standards and have been for about 30 years. Canon has a TWAIN driver, which is the most popular by far. Some scanners drivers are proprietary, or closed. The proprietary systems will not interface with as many apps as TWAIN. More important, proprietary drivers tend to become obsolete because they are updated by the manufacturer. After a scanner has been upgraded by a generation or two of newer scanners, the manufacturer probably doesn’t see the need to keep the old, proprietary scanner up to date. TWAIN is a standard and must be kept up to date. I simply cannot imagine any legitimate reason for having a proprietary driver in this day and age of “open systems”. One last thing. My previous scanner was a Canon DR-C125 which I bought 9 years ago. It was the predecessor of the DR-C225 and it’s still going strong. (I gave it to my son.) It was such a great scanner that its performance influenced my purchase of the C225. Here are quotes from my review of my old C125: “6/29/13. I HAVE YET TO EXPERIENCE ONE JAM OR MULTIPLE FEED. For years I've been putting off scanning the contents of 3-ring binders I have collected. They are old. The stacks of binders are 5 feet tall, I'd guess well over three thousand pages. And the paper was not in good shape. I received the Canon DR-C125 yesterday afternoon and began scanning. It scanned this giant pile of paper with no jams or misfeeds! That, to me, is astonishing. It is also the most important attribute of a scanner from my perspective. 8/9/14 Update, one year later. I just received a 100-page insurance policy in the mail. The staples were only slightly smaller than horseshoes. (Staples damage paper and are a big cause of jams.) The post office apparently ran over the envelope with WW II surplus tanks. I pulled the horseshoes out, put the 100 pager in the Canon, started it, and did not have a single jam. As a matter of fact, I do not recall a single jam in the year I've had this scanner. Wow. For me, putting a big document in a scanner and turning to other work without having to watch for jams is terrific. 8/3/17 Update. Here it is more than four years later and this baby works as well as the day I bought it. Yea Cannon. 5/23/21 Update: This scanner is still working GREAT.”

Nice scanner that actually works well on Windows 11
Ok I didn’t want to buy a new scanner. Really. I absolutely love my Fujitsu scanner which I have had for decades. It looks it too, plenty of wear, but worked like a charm. But then along comes Windows 11. Well the Fujitsu ( now somebody else bought them) driver works so poorly to the point I gave my lovely Fujitsus away. The new Fujitsu scanners are even worse, they want you to connect wirelessly but are so unstable you need to reinstall the drivers constantly. This Canon solves all those problems. It’s happy being connected by USB and the software is OK even though it looks like a refugee from Windows 3.1 days. But here’s the big plus. The canon never ever feeds more than one sheet no matter how bunched up they are, that’s way better than my old Fujitsu. It outputs the same .pdf format files reliably and flips them around if you fed it upside down. No complaints. I have not tried wireless because I value the little sanity I have left.

The Canon image FORMULA R40 is the BEST!
I have used many flatbed and auto feed scanners over the past few decades in office and home environments and I must say that this one is the best one yet. And when you figure the cost of the unit, it's the best value in the market. It was the easiest setup for my iMac 27". Don't follow the web address on the setup guide, as it no longer connects to the actual drivers. Rather go to the canon.com website and look for the driver. The install was quick and efficient. Once installed it was a breeze testing the scanner with 22 double-sided pages. Be sure to pull out the front tray all the way out so you don't jam the scanner because it is fast. I was mesmerized at the speed and quality of this scanner. Once the scan of the 22 pages was completed, the application allows you time in the event that you forgot a page or an envelope the document was mailed in. Once I scanned the envelope with the postmark date I then clicked on the FINISH field on the App and the entire file was stored beautifully so I could go and rename the file to my liking. Once you are done with your task you can push the from tray back into the unit and the actual footprint of the unit on my desk was tiny. I highly recommend this unit for office or home use. You scan documents, receipts, business cards, etc. You don't need to purchase a receipt version of the scanner, as this one does it all to perfection. Kudos to Canon for this excellent scanner!

A VERY GOOD SCANNER , I LIKE IT .
ITS A VERY NICE SCANNER, I USE IT FOR MY PHARMACY IN CANADA. VERY FAST OR IT COULD BE LITTLE SLOWER TO SCAN IF WE NEED HIGHT QUALITY IMAGE. SCANS ON BOTH THE SIDES, THESE ARE THE PROS AND THE CONES ACTUALLY MY SYSTEM IS FILLWARE AND THEY DON'T CONSIDER IT AS THE BEST SCANNER FOR THEIR SOFTWARE, IT WOULD GLITCH SOMETIMES AND NEED TO CALL MY HARDWARE GUYS TO FIX IT. SO FAR IF IT IS USED FOR HOME OR SMALL BUSINESS , I WOULD RECOMMEND IT.

Equipo muy efectivo
El escaner es muy eficiente y rápido, lo mejor es que escanea por los 2 lados al mismo tiempo, y no pierde el tiempo girandola u acomodandola.
