The 1930s Scrapbook (Scrapbook)

Amazing. Bought this as a gift and it is so beautiful to look at with interesting details, I've put other books similar of different eras in my basket, definitely worth buying.

I bought this as a gift for a family friend, as I suspected, like other family members of a similar age, he may not be able to read a great deal and could not think what subject he'd be interested in. I've included several photos which I think this Amazon listing is very much lacking as the photo on the front cover doesn't do the book justice, and this listing only shows that image, so it's very difficult to decide whether to buy the book on the strength of one photo, and I was certainly in two minds whether to buy it. I'm hoping my photos may help others decide if this book is suitable for their loved ones. The topics include such things as: House & garden, domestic appliances, food/groceries, sweets, household products, cosmetics/toiletries, magazines, fashion, comics, toys/games, motoring, holidays, cruising, flying, Christmas crackers, fireworks ... and a few more besides. Surely a conversation starter for any elderly person of that era! I'm very pleased with it as a gift to give to a friend but hadn't given it to him at the time of writing. It came sealed in shrinkwrap but I opened it because I had it in mind for buying someone else of a similar age but wanted to see what the contents were like first. Some pages have a little bit of writing (in a handwriting font), but others are just pictures. It's a big (tall) book though, so may not fit all bookshelves (approx 15.5 inches tall x 11 inches wide). Having said that, the larger size also means the photos are more visible! May very well consider a second purchase in the future. One of the photos shows a list of other book titles in this series.

I was interested in the history of my house, and what it would have looked like inside when it was built, and my search of Amazon led me to this book. It's a large but slim hardback, with hundreds of pictures of products from the 1930s and a tiny bit of background information on the events of the decade. I found it fascinating, as this is an era that I know nothing about beyond watching Poirot on TV and studying the beginning of WWII at school. The history of ordinary people's everyday lives has always interested me more than that of celebrities or politics, so I've spent several hours immersed in this book. I notice something new every time I open it, and the glimpse into the lives of ordinary people through the products they used and the adverts they saw is incredible. I rather like that there is no commentary on the images; the interpretation is left entirely to the reader. Highly recommended if you want to know more about the social history of the UK in the 30s. I'm considering purchasing other books in this series, although there isn't one for my own decade (the 80s) yet.

For the people of the eras these are reminiscent (basically the older generation) why did they use such small handwriting type print in this series that they struggle to see? Other than that they are lovely and bring back a lot of memories for my 86 yr old father. Packed with pics.

I was struggling for a meaningful gift for my mothers 80th birthday and then I spotted this on Amazon....Perfect. It reminded my mother of her childhood and brought back many memories, which ended in hours and hours of conversation after the viewing. My mother was delighted, so a success all round. Sometimes it is the little things that mean the most. If the service supplied by the vendor was anything to go by, I will not hesitate to shop there again for other presents in the future... It’s v interesting . Bought it for my client who is almost 100yrs old .. good talking points in . The only thing is the pictures are quite dark and she can’t see v well.....However I still think it’s great . Thank you

My mom has dementia and loved this book as she could relate to the pictures. I agree with other reviewers as the written material is hand written which is eligible especially for someone elderly.

I bought this recently for my 80 year old grandmother's birthday and she adored it! She wouldn't stop looking through it and telling stories to open the rest of her gifts. Despite being a fan of retro artwork I had a bit of a hard time appreciating it myself. It seems very geared to those who will remember the things inside. Still, it's an absolutely fantastic gift for anyone old enough to remember the things inside! My only warning is that all of the pages are collages, not single images. Some of it is very busy and some of it is very small and hard to see properly. For some people, especially those with bad eyesight, this might be off-putting.

Great memory of the past

I purchased this for my Grandma for her upcoming 80th birthday; I received today and flipped through just to see what the book was about and I was a little disappointed to see that the book revolves around British culture. I didn't see anywhere in the description this was the case. Only when I go back and read some of the reviews do I see this is called out. The other point would be that the font used to provide descriptions is very hard to read. I can imagine my grandma will have difficulty reading. Overall the book is beautiful but I wish I would have know it was more on British culture.
