Does it have to be attached to a tree ?

No, it doesn't have to be attached to a tree. I bought 4 of these as gifts for my two grandfathers, my dad, and my brother. My dad and one of my grandfathers hung theirs up on one of the posts on their back porch. My other grandfather hung his up on the side of his garage so he could see it out his kitchen window. They can be attached wherever you would like it to be.

What is the difference between the standard and the limited edition?

There is no difference and there is no "limited edition" of these as they are all the same. That is an error on the product page.

Can this be put on without being inder a cover such as a carport?

Yes, but it will last longer if it has cover from rain, snow....
