Kayla Miller, the New York Times bestselling author-illustrator of Click , Camp , Act , Clash , and Crunch and coauthor of Besties, returns with a new Olive story! Olive is less-than-excited to be spending spring break stuck with her dad...will she be able to make the most of her trip, or will everything break apart? Spring break is full of possibilities…but not for Olive. This year, Olive is leaving her friends and all of their exciting vacation plans behind to visit her dad at his new apartment in the city. Goober is thrilled to spend a whole week with their father and has a long list of activities for their time together. Olive, on the other hand, still remembers the hurt of their dad moving halfway across the world. She would rather spend time with her friend Bree or scrolling through her new phone to keep up with everything she’s missing back home than catch up with him . As the week winds on, the normally easygoing Olive finds feelings of loneliness and resentment throwing her out of whack. Is there any hope of salvaging the visit—or will Olive’s spring break be a spring bust ? New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Kayla Miller returns with another vibrant and emotional story about the power of second chances and how the fear of missing out can lead to missing out on what’s right in front of you. Good series.
My granddaughter, who's 10, gobbles graphic novels like ice cream from Braums, and this series is no exception. The setting deals with young ladies who share adventures, problems, and resolutions that have a real life feel. The only thing I feel could improve is the graphics--they have a muddled look.

great series
my daughter has read every novel in this series, and re-read them more than once. she says they do a good job of realistically portraying middle-school life.

Quick read but covers so much!!
Olive is torn on how she feels now her dad is back, but spending the week with him sure opens up a lot of discussion, feelings and social media. I think this is a timely read for any kid who has parents who are divorced or separated. I also enjoyed the social media tips for the tweens/teens on social media.

Includes internet safety tips
A quick read that might be the end of this series by Miller. To the adult reader I could see how Olive's reaction to her Dad and dependency on her phone/social media would read as immature, but I actually think Miller captured the essence of egocentric middle schoolers well. No, Olive can't reason through her feelings about her Dad, which really comes down to fear. And of course Olive can't see the deceptive nature of the highlight reel of social media. Olive is a great character but Miller does a good job depicting the angst of this season of life. As always the illustrations are great -- I especially liked the Com Convention. Definitely a wildly nerdy part of Olive's personality and I am here for the nerdy. I enjoyed the story, but I thought Miller's inclusion of internet safety tips was even more important. Kids (and maybe adults too) need to see those in multiple formats. I'm not sure if there is much story left for Miller to tell, but I've really enjoyed this series of graphic novels. They've been a bit uneven and I liked some more than others. I've been concerned about how Miller portrays female characters along the way (Nat!!), but overall I think there is more good than bad in these six books. Happy to add them to my classroom shelves.

Social media pit!
So I love that it shows how much a phone can suck you in and ruin social time with family. Family's are hard and split families leave a lot of pain on the kids. If you make plans stick to them as your children don't stay small forever amd you can permanently harm them with let downs.

Confusing
I love Kayla Miller graphic novels. The main character, Olive is 11-12 and goes through many situations that are common to kids her age. I usually find the development of stories quite smart. In this one though, I have trouble understanding what the author is trying to tell. Olive gets a smartphone and spends a good part of her spring break comparing herself to what she sees her friends are posting online. It sounds a clear enough story about the effects of social media but there are other elements in the story that seem to contradict that and make it confusing. I think the average 10-12 year old reader would miss the point entirely. The last pages of the book are some advice regarding smartphones in the line of “Don’t compare yourself to others”. That to a 12 year old is like telling “Don’t be sad” to someone depressed. Well, if it is a cautionary tale about social media, it is kind of a miss.
