Excellent cutter if you follow a few simple steps.
This cutter really works well providing you follow a few simple steps. First, create a temporary platform from books or magazines to the right of the cutting bed that is the same height so the cut paper does not fall as it is being cut. Then when cutting, put substantial force with the left hand on the stack to be cut on the cutting bed while working the lever with the right hand. I got 6 perfect cuts this way instead of slightly irregular cuts. I like the manufacturer's video documentation on how to maintain and adjust the cutter as well as the availability of replacement parts. I keep this on the floor under a desk and slide it out to use. At 45 lbs. it is very heavy to lift and move. Best if you have a sturdy dedicated cutting table that you can leave the cutter on. BTW, each cut saves me a 15 mile drive and a $1 per cut at a print shop. Costs far more than this at national print shops. And I can do a better job than the print shop cutter.

Good, solid guillotine cutter for the money
Good cutter for the price -- even though I'm on my 2nd one. One problem is the packaging -- this cutter is heavy, and the winder on the paper compression bar sticks out. Though there is some styrofoam in the area, it's not enough for this sturdy part to survive rough handling -- my first cast iron handle was broken in half and the 8mm hardened steel shaft was bent -- not sure from what height this unit would have to be dropped to accomplish that, but FedEx managed it. Bottom line, this needs to be a user-installed part. To Amazon's credit, they picked up the broken cutter and I had a new one in less than a week. So save your packaging! until you check out your unit. Other users have complained that the handle on the winder comes off because an inner part breaks in half. It's not broken. Find the two pieces of plastic and put then together in the slot on the winder, then shove the handle back on. It's not the best design, but it works -- just don't pull on the handle, or it will come off. Finally to the cutter. The directions are almost non-existent, and those that are there are a laughable, unintelligible translation from Chinese. A real hoot. Basically follow these rules: 1) Only one set of hands on the cutter, period. 2) Use in good light. 3) Raise the compression bar enough to insert your sheaf, sheets, or book 4) Align the intended cut with the blade 5) Lower the compression bar enough to keep paper from moving. 6) Release the latch, pull on the handle, then re-raise the handle until it latches. Voila. I use this cutter to de-spine books and manuals for scanning. It chomps through anything I can get under the bar -- perhaps an inch-and-a-half -- like butter, and produces a clean cut. I have scanned a hundred thousand pages using this cutter. For the record, I use the cutter without the plastic safety shield -- it's much easier to see what I'm doing -- but reinstall the shield when the cutter isn't in use: the blade is sharp!. I can add that I took the first cutter apart trying to repair it on my own. I liked the engineering I saw. There's nothing "cheap" about this cutter for the price. Good luck with yours.

Heavy-Duty and Solid, But Arrived Damaged & Requires Some Force
You can tell this was dropped before I received itโone of the feet is damaged, so I wasnโt able to attach the protective grip on that corner. Because of that, it doesnโt sit completely level, which affects stability slightly. It does take some force to cut, but this is my first heavy-duty cutter, so that may just be part of the learning curve. So far, it cuts cleanly when I apply steady pressure, though I havenโt tested the full 400-sheet capacity yet. There is also a bit of a learning curve with the measurement guides. Iโve had to double-check alignment before cutting to make sure everything is accurate. The cutter is very heavy and larger than I expected. While that makes it feel solid and durable, itโs also harder to store in a smaller workspace or studio. Pros: Very solid, heavy-duty build Cuts cleanly with proper pressure Feels durable Cons: Arrived with a damaged foot Requires noticeable force to cut Large and heavy (harder to store) Takes time to get used to measurements Overall, it seems like a strong cutter, especially for larger projects, but it may be better suited for someone with more space and experience using heavy-duty equipment. Iโll update after more use.

This Cutter Doesnโt Cut It - Angled Cuts, Rough Results, Scuff Marks.
The HFS(R) 17" Heavy Duty Guillotine Paper Cutter arrived with a minor packaging blemishโpossibly from the Clamping Handle rubbing against the Blade Holder Hood. Setup Observations: - Step #1 suggests placing the cutter on a flat surface. Realistically, youโll need to place it upside down or on its side to proceed. - Step #2: Insert the four plastic feet securely. I used a rubber mallet to ensure a snug fit - otherwise, the cutter will be unbalanced. - Step #3: Two Allen wrenches are included. I used the larger to reverse the Clamping Handle. The purpose of the smaller wrench remains unclear. - Step #5: It is unclear the appropriate amount of tightening for the Clamping Handle to prevent shifting โ overtightening resulted in wrist pain. - Step #7: Pressing the cutting handle too firmly also strained my wrists. Additionally, with each cut, the blade shaved slithers off the red blade pad. Performance Issues: - The Guide Ruler Lock Wheel can detach if turned too far counterclockwise. Reattaching it requires creativity. - The Guide Ruler doesnโt align straight. You must manually hold it in place while tightening, and hope that it doesnโt shift. - Despite all adjustments, every test cut was angled - not suitable for precise 90ยฐ joins. - Cuts are rough and jagged. The cutter also leaves dirt marks on boards that wonโt clean off. Positives: - Cuts medium weight cardboard just fine. - There was an extra plastic foot, and five screws in the box - though the purpose of the screws is unclear. I need a reliable cutter for my current project. This one doesnโt cut it. It will be returned, and my search will continue.

totally awesome paper cutter with little effort
We haven't used the product yet. We did not receive the allen wrench that is required for the reversal of the clamping handle. ***Upon getting a response from customer service telling us to look in the "tool box" where there were two allen wrenches! My apologies but I also got to say that this paper cutter is 100% awesome with little effort to cut 100's of pages at one time!!!!!

Solid, SHARP & Heavy! Be sure to read the instructions first before assembling.
Pretty straightforward to set up, but could be confusing upfront. Ditch the blue safety guard, who needs safety anyway? The blade is hefty, and the pressure bar is great for aligning paper on the board. So far it looks like the measurement indicators are pretty spot-on. Only a mm or two difference between cuts, but it can easily slice through extra thick stacks. For anyone setting it up for the first time, DO NOT UNSCREW ANYTHING before reading the instructions thoroughly. I unscrewed the black alignment bar from its track like a doofus, and then I had to take a good portion of the cutter apart in order to get the alignment bar back into its mounting bracket, which is held together with tension. If you unscrew it, the bracket will fall to the bottom of its track, and you will NOT be able to reattach it without taking the track apart. The adjustable alignment bar is hit or miss. I don't use it too often, as it feels a bit loose once it's tightened down. I just use the printed measurements and it's treated me well. One thing to be aware of is that the grid on the cutting board is for cm measurements, NOT inches. You need to align your cuts to the two rulers on the board instead of the grid. That might be a little confusing for newcomers. Overall though, the guillotine is fantastically sharp and has held its edge for the month I've had it. Hopefully it holds that edge for a good long while.

Good and Bad
I would have given a 5 star, but could not. All the reviews, good and bad are true. It's a heavy duty cutter, it cuts large stocks of paper easily. But it also leaves a mark and it cuts slanted. The cuts are not straight. I use it for my planner business. And it makes my planner look less professional. I could not return it, I live in the Caribbean. Soo shipping back was not an option. So I never did. So am left dissapointed. I wish I knew how I could fix this problem.

Superb for bookbinding
I bought this for my bookbinding hobby and if you have ever tried trimming a text block with a knife you will understand why. Bookbinding is a very low-cost craft but in my view this piece of kit is essential and it is the only pricey tool you need to get. It works beautifully and is so satisfying to use. My only caveat is that when you first use it you must cut some waste paper initially to remove the oil used for transit. I didn't do that and so ruined a lovely text block. However, that was a one-off. It's a magnificent machine. By the way there are useful YouTube videos on how to adjust and maintain the blade.

Good value, effective guillotine
The guillotine cuts through approx 3cm. It requires some effort but has now done about 30 books of this size without loss of sharpness. Two minor issues I've had to work around: 1. Books tend to warp a little whilst being cut, so I tend to break them into 2 thinner sections to reduce the effect 2. The last few pages don't cut cleanly, hence the scissors in the attached photo. I've tried putting scrap paper underneath the books, but that makes so much mess! Overall, very pleased.

AS DESCRIBED
WORKS BEAUTFULLY, ONCE YOU HAVE EATEN YOUR BREAFAST PORRIDGE TO OPEN AND TRANSPORT THE WEIGHTY PRODUCT, TO YOUR DESK' CLEAN CUT REQUIRING LESS MUSCLE THAN I IMAGINED FOR TRIMMING A 360 PAGE BOOK THE CUTTER FOOLED ME. BEFORE EXECUTING ITS MISSION, THE LOCK BUTTON HAS TO BE PRESSED. THE DOWNSIDE - THE TOOL BOX. SEALED BEYOND MACHINE EXTRACTING PRESSURE. ANS REMAINS SO. THE MEASURING BAR, WONT'S LOCK. SUSPICION FALLS ON INCOMPLETE ASSEMBLY. CAN BE WORKED AROUND, BUT THE PRICE SUGGEST A MORE THOROUGH INSPECTION BE TAKEN BEFORE LEAVING FACTORY. PROVIDING THE BLADE HAS A SATISFACTORY LIFE SPAN, NO INDICATION TO THE SERVITUDE OF CHOPS - THEN I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO A SATISFACTORY RELATIONSHIP. IF NOT, NOTICE WILL BE SHARED ON THIS PLATFORM.

Very happy with this cutter, highly recommend!
Absolutely love this product. Its super easy to assemble, as you only need to slide the lever handle on. I'm a pretty small woman, but the handle is easy to pull down with minimal effort. So far I've cut through a few ~160 page books, and its been extremely easy, smooth, and consistent. It's a pretty large unit, and a heavy one (~40 lbs). The weight itself isn't an issue, but paired with the size makes it a little cumbersome to move around. The blade is super sharp, and cuts beautifully. I haven't had it long enough to experience any dulling of the blade, but I've also read that a good way to sharpen guillotine blades is to cut through tinfoil with it-- something to try? All in all, wonderful product and I'm very happy I invested in this! Sorry for the instagram video, its the only one I had on hand of using this cutter!
