Product Description Feelgood blockbuster adaptation of the smash-hit stage musical, with Meryl Streep finding love the second time around on the Greek isles. After reading her mother Donna (Streep)'s diary, soon-to-be-wed Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) invites three of her mother's old flames, Bill (Stellan Skarsgard), Sam (Pierce Brosnan), and Harry (Colin Firth) to the wedding, in the hope of finding out who her real father is. Arriving on the sun-drenched Mediterranean island for the first time in 20 years, the now middle-aged hunks soon rekindle long dormant emotions, causing Donna to revisit her past glories, and, with the help of her two oldest friends, Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski), belt out all those Abba hits with the exuberance of a spring chicken. desertcart.co.uk Review The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia! deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer Review: Just stunning! - My blu-ray disc arrived bang on release date this morning and the picture is stunning! It is crystal clear and the sound is great. I only watched a bit to make sure it was OK as we are having a girlie Mamma Mia! party next week - moussaka, ouzo, dressing up, fairy lights, karaoke and THE FILM! The film is one of the best I have ever seen - if doctors prescribed watching this they could cut down on the valium, as it is a complete joy and the feel-good factor is top-notch. The singing has a reality about it that I like; rather than a professional suddenly bursting into immaculate song, it is much more believable that people just 'fall into' singing following from what they were saying. And it didn't matter to me or my friends that the singing wasn't opera level! The film is funny, and poignant. You'll laugh and you'll wipe a tear! (Well, most will!) And the Abba music is unbeatable. Honey, honey, how I love it, A-ha! Review: Here I go again ... - It's the classic story of girl-seeks-father while the band plays on. It's the classic musical. Sing. Dance. Make Merry. Watch Meryl Streep and her two sidekicks bring the house down. It's a whole load of noisy fun set in glorious Greece. Not only do we get an awesome frolic through ABBA songs, we get James Bond singing SOS. What is not to like, honestly? Well I suppse the story _is_ a little thin, I suppose it's not as believable as it could be. I suppose it's unlikely that a bunch of strangers would _really_ all start singing. But who cares? Watch it. Enjoy it. Hum along at home. My My. How could I resist it? I even tried to make up my own ABBA song Flash wedding party A rhymed, happy abba sings before the music

Good value
According to Amazon they have had to date around 793 reviews of the Mama Mia film on(mostly) DVD and Blu-ray. So it's pretty popular! No point in adding yet another review of the actual film content then, as you can read all the others! Having purchased a Panasonic home theatre system we needed a Blu- ray to test it with. We wanted a fairly recent film that was originally shot in HD with 5.1 surround sound and not a doctored up old one. My wife and I like Abba and since Amazon were selling Mama Mia at a fraction of the original price we thought we would give it a try. The first thing that you notice is that the screen format is in letter box which is a little dissapointing (top and bottom of screen blacked out) but not a big problem. The HD camerawork, coupled with the beautiful scenery in Crete, is very sharp. The sound is good with clear dialogue and well recorded music. The surround sound is not particularly noticeable - so only a nit picking 4 stars! Recommended

Ignore the critics and just enjoy it!
When I saw this in the cinema quite a few people were sniggering at Pierce Brosnan's singing and some critics have been quite scathing. But it's a valiant effort by non-singers and I applaud them for it. There are very few movies that I watch more than once or twice, but I've seen this four times already. It's a hugely enjoyable feel-good movie, full of brilliant ABBA songs and just altogether great fun. So ignore the critics, turn up the volume, soak up the beautiful Greek locations and enjoy. I can hardly wait for the Blu-ray DVD.

Mothers and Daughters
I am so glad that this is the iconic statement of mother-daughter relationships for my daughter and me. When I was growing up it was repressive mothers from D.H. Lawrence novels. I love that Donna and Sophie fight and end up supporting each other on what turns out to be both of their special day. I let my daughter watch all of this although she is only 6 and some of the content is a bit hot. I think the hot bits are only hot if you know anything about sex already, the spicy comments go over my daughter's head. She loves the songs and will get up and dance to almost all of them, so it can give her good exercise on a rainy day as well as a good laugh (excuse for watching it again!). She likes to act out all the characters, even Aphrodite's water fountaining up at the end! Colin Firth plays a gay man very badly; amazing that he went on to do A Single Man so brilliantly, but who cares. The cast is fabulous, the scenery super (it's why I insisted we buy the Blu-Ray version) and the way they do Dancing Queen is my favourite of all musical dance numbers. Oh and those kinky boots ...!
