First time charging it. 3 Hours and counting and it's approximately 50% charged.

For common sense reasons of electrical safety, I do not recommend playing while charging, it has a large capacity battery of 10000 mAh, which is more than enough time for you to play the game. At present there is no problem in terms of charging, but if you do not use it for a long time, according to experience, do not keep it charged after a full charge

Do these side straps break easily?

Haven't broken mine yet. They appear rugged.

how well fitted is the piece that connects to the actual meta quest its self?

It fits well. Once it is installed, it just feels like it is part of the headset. My kids have used it a ton and had no issues.
