INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In his New York Times bestselling book, Discipline Is Destiny , Ryan Holiday made the Stoic case for a life of self-discipline. In this much-anticipated third installment in the Stoic Virtues series, he argues for the necessity of doing what’s right – even when it isn’t easy For the ancients, everything worth pursuing in life flowed from a strong sense of justice—or one’s commitment to doing the right thing, no matter how difficult. In order to be courageous, wise, and self-disciplined, one must begin with justice. The influence of the modern world often tells us that acting justly is optional. Holiday argues that that’s simply untrue—and the fact that so few people today have the strength to stand by their convictions explains much about why we’re so unhappy. In Right Thing, Right Now, Holiday draws on fascinating stories of historical figures such as Marcus Aurelius, Florence Nightingale, Jimmy Carter, Gandhi, and Frederick Douglass, whose examples of kindness, honesty, integrity, and loyalty we can emulate as pillars of upright living. Through the lives of these role models, readers learn the transformational power of living by a moral code and, through the cautionary tales of unjust leaders, the consequences of an ill-formed conscience. The Stoics never claimed that living justly was easy, only that it was necessary. And that the alternative—sacrificing our principles for something lesser—was considered only by cowards and fools. Right Thing, Right Now is a powerful antidote to the moral failures of our modern age, and a manual for living virtuously. Starts strong but then meanders
I enjoyed the first 1/3 of the book very much because it discussed principles of living that have held up over time along with brief anecdotes to emphasize points. I did not find the later 2/3 of the book to be as helpful. The later sections are largely comprised of long stories describing the civil rights movement, women’s suffrage and rights in general, and the lives of various people, including Harry Truman, Mahatma Gandhi, Florence Nightingale, Harvey Milk, and others. Although the author links parts of the stories to the early principles, the stories are too long and quickly become boring. I came very close to not finishing the book in the middle of the Gandhi story. To his credit, the author points out toward the latter parts of the book that the principles discussed earlier can be very difficult to implement in real life and he provides targeted, short anecdotes to describe why. He emphasizes that people often have to make less than ideal adjustments to accomplish a lesser goal. Overall, I recommend the book for its strengths in the early stages, and its occasional useful anecdotes in its later chapters.

I have read all of Ryan Holiday's books... this continues the Stoic Virtues Series. Don't miss it!
Ryan Holiday's "Right Thing, Right Now: Good Values. Good Character. Good Deeds." is a masterful addition to The Stoic Virtues Series. As someone deeply interested in practical philosophy and personal development, I found this book both enlightening and actionable. Holiday seamlessly integrates ancient Stoic wisdom with modern-day challenges, offering a guide that is as relevant today as it was centuries ago. His clear, engaging writing style makes complex concepts accessible, and the real-life examples he provides help illustrate how these timeless principles can be applied to everyday situations. The book’s emphasis on doing the right thing in the moment, cultivating good character, and committing to good deeds resonates deeply and provides a blueprint for living a more virtuous life. What sets this book apart is its practical approach. Holiday doesn't just theorize about Stoic virtues; he provides concrete steps and exercises to help readers incorporate these values into their lives. Each chapter ends with actionable advice that encourages reflection and growth, making it an invaluable resource for anyone looking to improve their character and decision-making. The book's structure is well-organized, making it easy to digest and refer back to key points. Whether you're new to Stoicism or a seasoned practitioner, "Right Thing, Right Now" offers profound insights and practical tools to help you navigate life's challenges with integrity and purpose. This book is a must-read for anyone committed to personal development and ethical living.
