Expedition S

I'm doing a navigation qualification and this was the brand and model recommended by the instructor. It's a great compass and I especially value the romer for different map scales (i.e 1:25K & 1:50K are both on the base plate). The lanyard also has lots of different scales and is a nice touch. Finally, the lines on the compass face are really helpful when finding your bearings (not all compasses have that). All in, I am very happy with my purchase.

Likes - Romer scales; large baseplate, adjustable declination, good grip on compass housing, good needle dampening; 3x silicone feet on the baseplate to help stop the compass from sliding across a map; baseplate markings are embossed so shouldn't wear out as quickly as on some other compasses Dislikes: - The declination adjustment tool is housed in the lanyard and is accessed by opening the housing. This breaks the lanyard loop. Since the housing is very easy to pull apart, the compass doesn't feel secure on the loop. I'll be using a different lanyard. - Because the degree markings (black) are on a dark orange housing, they're more difficult to read than they should be. A lighter coloured housing would be better. - The cardinals are marked in dark orange and are on an dark orange housing making them (almost) impossible to read.

I've used Silva compasses for over 30 years and in the past they have always been the best on the market, So the other day I thought I would treat myself to a new one and thought the latest Expedition compass would best serve my needs, I ordered it from Amazon as they are one of the few places you can buy this compass in the UK, it duly arrived and I was very disappointed to find the orange plastic bezel had a crack in it (see attached picture) this meant the declination adjustment no longer works properly, so I returned this to get a replacement which arrived only for me to find this had two cracks in the bezel (see attached picture) I'm now returning this for a refund as I have no faith in quality of this product and even if I did receive an unbroken version what's the likely hood of it failing in use. Other minor issues I spotted with this compass were: in the product photo the bezel is a nice bright orange/yellow colour but in reality it is a dark orange, the markings around the bezel aren't as clear and crisp as in the product photo and some of the glow in the dark markings aren't centred correctly. All in all a pretty poor show from Silva, and goes to show what can happen when companies move their production to the far east and don't carefully monitor the quality of their products.

Bought this to replace a 40-year old Ranger whose needle list its magnetic directions. Nice compass and I hope to get many years of use from it.
