From the self-described 'black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet', these soaring, urgent essays on the power of women, poetry and anger are filled with darkness and light. Penguin Modern: fifty new books celebrating the pioneering spirit of the iconic Penguin Modern Classics series, with each one offering a concentrated hit of its contemporary, international flavour. Here are authors ranging from Kathy Acker to James Baldwin, Truman Capote to Stanislaw Lem and George Orwell to Shirley Jackson; essays radical and inspiring; poems moving and disturbing; stories surreal and fabulous; taking us from the deep South to modern Japan, New York's underground scene to the farthest reaches of outer space. Review: Excellent book - Excellent lessons in life and activism. Review: Still important - This is a very short but powerful collection of essays and papers from the late 1970s to early 1980s. Audre Lorde was an American self-described Black, lesbian, feminist. She was also a powerful poet. The few papers reproduced here could easily have been written yesterday. That says something terrifying. In the paper entitled 'Learning from the 1960s' presented at Harvard for the 1982 Malcolm X Weekend, she states: "... we must recognise that many of our high expectations of rapid revolutionary change did not in fact occur. And many of the gains that did are even now being dismantled." That rings as true today as it did in 1982. Yet these papers also stress unity despite difference, and strength from within. I think everyone should read Audre Lorde. She spoke/speaks sense.

Powerful
Helped raise my awareness and empathy for her particular lived experience. It supported my reflection on identity and racial and ethnic identity. It helped me understand women's anger at injustice and oppression; the importance of hearing and understanding it and understanding its complex, systemic causes and conditions.

Essays for all our times. Revolutionary then and needed now in times of distorted reality
Everyone could benefit from reading these essays. Liberation not empowerment and a recognition that it’s not individual autonomy alone that will make change happen, we need to be alert at all times to the struggles of women and children who have the least privilege; it’s the struggle of the group, of women as a sex class everywhere that needs our attention. Aufdre Lorde understands that it’s system change that needs to happen. And we will keep fighting for that
