#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NEWBERY MEDAL WINNER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE’S 100 BEST YA BOOKS OF ALL TIME Dig deep in this award-winning, modern classic that will remind readers that adventure is right around the corner--or just under your feet!Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnatses. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the boys build character by spending all day, every day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are an awful lot of holes. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. But what could be buried under a dried-up lake? Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption."A smart jigsaw puzzle of a novel." —New York Times *Includes a double bonus: an excerpt from Small Steps, the follow-up to Holes, as well as an excerpt from the New York Times bestseller Fuzzy Mud. Review: Great story to read with your boys - Excellent book for 8+ years old kids to read. Review: Reminds you of the things that matter - Louis Sachar's 'Holes' has steadfastly carried forward my strong affinity for children's/young adult literature and the recurring theme of breaking life down to the absolute basics. I relished this story of survival, as I saw it, across stark and harsh environs (because when is life ever dandy in anyone's perspective). In a time when survival has become almost too 'basic' to be grateful for, I loved reading as this book affirmed the importance of a routine, of gratitude, of knowing how to play your cards, acknowledging when fate guides you, guiding yourself through the rest, and standing firmly on your own two feet, not feeling pressure to always sway in the direction of the wind but to stray in favour of your conviction. These are a few themes I took away, not at all eclipsed by the beautiful structure, and smart storyline(s).

Even though it had a few parts that were pretty hard to read, it is a great book for kids at age of 12-16.

One of the best books I have read
I won't write much about it as I want you to read it for yourself. The plot is full of bends and hidden connections, making it a perpetually exciting book to read.

A really good book
Holes by Louis Sachar is a heartwarming, mysterious, and gripping story. Stanley Yelnats, who is the main character, has a poor family and his dad tries to recycle old shoes to make a fortune. The story begins with Stanley "stealing" a famous sport player's shoes. He goes to court and gets two choices. Jail or Camp Green lake. Stanley chooses camp Green Lake. At the camp he had to dig 5 feet holes. For me, the most powerful part of the story was when Stanley makes a friend, Zero, he makes a deal with him. Zero was the fastest digger at Camp Green Lake, but Zero never learned how to read. The deal that Stanley made with Zero was if Zero digs part of his hole Stanley had to dig, Stanley would teach Zero how to read. I thought this was the most powerful part of the book because this is the start of their relationship and it gets better throughout the story. The theme of the story, which is friends stay together, relates to us. For example when Zero got sick Stanley took Zero up a mountain and fed him onions. This book teaches us to never leave a friend behind. I would strongly recommend Holes to third graders and up who like mystery, and adventure stories.

A Timeless Tale of Friendship and Perseverance
Louis Sachar's Holes is a beloved classic in children's literature, and for good reason. This novel is a masterclass in storytelling, combining elements of adventure, mystery, and social commentary to create an engaging and memorable narrative that appeals to readers of all ages. Initially recommended to me by an author of a writing tutorial book, Holes quickly struck a chord with its familiar yet fresh storytelling. I soon realized that I had seen the movie adaptation of Holes, which only deepened my appreciation for Sachar's original work. As the writing tutorial author suggested, this book is a treasure trove of writing techniques, making it an excellent study for aspiring writers. The story follows Stanley Yelnats, a boy who is wrongfully sent to a labor camp where he and other boys are forced to dig holes in the desert. The plot masterfully weaves together multiple storylines, including the history of Stanley's family curse and the mysterious outlaw Kissing Kate Barlow. Through these interwoven tales, Sachar explores themes of fate, justice, and redemption. What makes Holes particularly remarkable is its accessibility. The language is straightforward and clear, making it easy for younger readers to follow, while the depth of the narrative ensures that older readers remain engaged. The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their unique quirks and backstories that add richness to the plot.
