Catchy and fun album filled with amazing songs!
I really enjoyed this album. While Godsmack have moved on from their harder Nu metal sound, they do a modern hard rock album very well. Songs like When legends rise, Bulletproof, Unforgettable, and Under your scars are amazing songs that will be stuck in your head, like most other songs on the album. Great album for anyone who likes modern hard rock with some catchiness to it!

If you're a fan of Godsmacks The Oracle and 1000HP, When Legends Rise is a more energetic and diverse evolution of that sound.
Godsmack returns with their 7th album, When Legends Rise! Is it worth the wait? I have enjoyed Godsmack since their debut record. The band had a heavy hitting metal and unique presence that other bands lacked. There was this tribal and pagan sound to them that had not been heard before. Not to mention Sully Erna's voice is exceptionally unique. Most early fans have whined about their slow transformation to a more hard rock sound since IV, however, I have enjoyed each inception of Godsmack. It's been a good 12 years since we've heard Sully use his deep screams on IV, but their energy is infectious to this day. Most of that is because of the level of musicianship and Sully's vocal delivery, it's hard to deny a well written song. Starting with The Oracle, they have begun morphing into a full time hard rock band. While IV was a bit of transition, The Oracle was the full change and When Legends Rise has continued down the same path as The Oracle and 1000HP. A more rockin sound with catchy riffs and chorus'. However it's not the rinse and repeat, When Legends Rise experiments a lot more than previous albums. Sully and Tony often share guitar duty, but it seems Tony has been exploring a bit more with his leads. There is also notably more use of the signature Godsmack 'Wah' sound to the leads throughout the record. Overall the lead work is much more interesting than on the last few albums and Tony was really experimenting with new sounds Godsmack has not had before. Tony's solo's are also excellent and reminiscent of Faceless. Shannon is rocking out on the drums this album as usual. While it has been toned down to suit the songs, his patterns are very unique and enjoyable, filling the holes of the songs very well with the signature tom laden fills and goblin slamming cymbal work. Shannon's drum tracks have always been energetic and constantly moving which is great. He hits the snare like a man that would weigh twice as much and the double bass is utilized well to emphasize heavier tracks. Robbie delivers some solid bass lines on the record, however he has fallen back into mostly following the guitar rhythm. According to The Making of The Oracle, Sully pushed Robbie to deliver his best bass lines of his career and you could tell on that record. While not as standout on this record, he still has some interesting riffs and compliments the music well, sometimes breaking off in a groovy licks of his own. Sully's vocals are back in full force. While not delivering his deep growls that seemed to have been retired after IV, he has switched to a very high energy vocal performances in their absence. He is still easily one of the most recognizable voices in rock and one of the best vocalists at delivering emotion and intensity and Sully has always had such a great presence and his cleans are top form here. Since The Oracle, Sully has been delivering impressive highs and lows, often going from singing in his signature baritone to straight shouting out the chorus. What else can be said? This guy is legendary and his vocals are simply excellent, if you've enjoyed his performances before, you'll enjoy them now. The front half of the album is a bit more catchy rock riffs and chorus', even breaking down for a ballad on Under Your Scars. Under Your Scars is an atmosphere heavy, piano drive song. Someday also has a bit more of a ballad sound, but a bit more upbeat and faster pace. After Someday though, they deliver some of their heaviest work since Faceless. Just One Time caught me totally off guard with the chugging opening riffs and heavy drum fills. Say My Name and Eye of the Storm follow suit, both heavy hitting, but a bit more fast pace strumming. Let It Out is probably the banger of the album. It has so much musical and vocal energy, fans will no doubt mosh to it if the band elects to play it live. So what about the first half? I started with the back half because it was heavier and I enjoy when Godsmack go heavy. When Legends Rise is a bit of an epic opening track and Unforgettable more anthemic. Every Part of Me has a very Nu Metal vibe to it with the guitar pedal, which is kinda cool to hear. Take it to the Edge could easily be on The Oracle. As with most albums I find the first single, Bullet Proof, to be the weakest track on the album. Not sure why, it's a good song, but compared to the other 10 tracks it isn't as fun.(You should watch the video though, it is pretty funny.) So should you buy the album? If you haven't liked The Oracle and 1000HP, then When Legends Rise most likely won't change your mind. However, if you liked both of those albums, When Legends Rise is a natural and more energetic evolution of those records and has more variety in sounds than both. If you aren't a Godsmack fan and just a fan of hard rock, absolutely check it out as well. If you are a long term Godsmack fan, absolutely check this record out. I really enjoy the record and of course having them release another album is great, even if they are now on four year intervals. Check it out!

Best Since Faceless
The songs that brought me to Godsmack in the first place are the anthemic-type (?) ones where Sully's voice just soars (such as Awake, I Stand Alone, Speak, Saints and Sinners, etc) more than the grittier Cryin' Like a Bitch type songs. I like those songs, too, but I just like the other ones better. So, for my money, When Legends Rise is the best Godsmack album since Faceless. I love the first five songs (When Legends Rise, Bulletproof, and Unforgettable, Every Part of Me, and Take it to the Edge) because of the soaring choruses. They get the album off to a great start and it doesn't let up. Does it sound a bit different from some of their other albums? Yes, it does. For me that's a good thing, though, as their last few albums were getting boring, imo, with 1000hp just sounding stale. They needed a breath of fresh air and this album is definitely it. I highly recommend it.
