Marathon Man [1976]

Marathon Man (1976) DVD (From the book by William Goldman.) "Paramount Classics" German edition with English language and subtitles, FSK Certificate16. This is one of my favourite thrillers from the 70's, with an atmosphere of menace in the music score by Michael Small...but with savage edits that have, to my knowledge, never been released and seen in any format, since the disastrous second audience screening, when someone shouted out that the film was "sick!"; and others in the audience complaining about the violence - which alarmed Paramount. A whole chunk involving Roy Scheider fighting 2 killers, who murdered a friend of his, amounting to 8.5 minutes, were removed; believed to be for the brutal violence. Author Goldman objected. Also edited, the scene where Roy Scheider provokes Szell into stabbing him with a hidden knife, was, originally very bloody, with gory close-ups; as well, the two torture scenes of Dustin Hoffman, including drilling into his tooth, were heavily edited. I have previously read as much as 25 minutes were excised from the original pre-theatrical, intended release. But knowing this doesn't ruin the film. One critic, expressing his surprise at the edits, said he had seen worse that year, including genital mutilation, in other films he had reviewed! The film ending is different to the book, with some other changes, which I won't spoil, as some may want to read it. The film was a financial and critical success. I never notice any flaws in the acting, or editing. Excellent cinematography, music, action, some humour. But this version has the original wide-screen aspect ratio only from the beginning to where Szells' brother leaves the bank, and near to the end; with in-between being 16 x 9. Highly recommended, and worthy of 5 ⭐s!

Great film although old .

An exciting and original story - packed with thrills.

Delivered on the day stated in a good condition and plays well on all my devices. I had seen the film when it was current and it was a delight to add it to my growing collection. Initially four seemingly unrelated stories all converging into a really exciting thriller. Good cast with some Oscar nominations. For the fashion sensitive the 70's and flairs were the thing then, personally I never wore them. Pleased to have it in my collection at a keen price. My two younger sons who had never seen it before have since commented that they also found it absorbing, tense and a good story.

A brilliant film with great actors great story, they don't make them like this anymore

It's a great film but not a marathon in sight

If only more 4k bluray came out in the UK. I would buy more. Unfortunately many of the best films are USA only. So I wait for a price drop. Marathon dropped sufficiently and I bought straight away. I'll confine my review to the PQ as just about everyone knows what a marvellous film this is. PQ is really good. Hdr is natural and balanced. They have done a great job with the 4k bluray. Highly recommended. But only when the price is right!

This DVD that I bought has English subtitles and I was not disappointed with the quality of sound or vision. I am so glad that I own this classic film! The plot is still exciting and dramatic in its presentation and the acting is solid and performed with conviction. The extras included the original seventies producers documentary and an up-dated interview format with the main stars which was really interesting, particularly in reference to Sir Laurence Olivier. I recommend this DVD as with all classics you will return to it again and again for the enjoyment of the drama, the powerful performances and the dental hygiene.

Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier are fantastic in this thriller of a movie. you will always remember the line "Is it Safe?"
