GRIPPING FINALE TO A MAGNIFICENT SERIES
In New York the imminent Peace Treaty will surely be the crowning glory of Allison Taylor's Presidency. From all round the world delegates have converged for the signing. Not all are as they seem. Some are intent upon sabotage. Far worse, ruthless dissidents actively plan the city's greatest ever disaster. As ever, it is up to Jack Bauer to save the day. With the odds so heavily stacked against, can even he avert catastrophe? Will this final season see the end of him?Creators confess one or two earlier seasons have been on the fanciful side. This one they ensure has feet more firmly on the ground - the aim a worthy climax for a show that from its very start has set exhilarating new standards. The formula is as before - twenty four episodes each representing an hour, tension increased by a frequently split screen and ever ticking clock. Throughout there are twists that truly stun, a dramatically increasing body count, any key figures who survive almost certainly with lives changed forever. Some may regret certain aspects. When so much is communicated in barely audible whispers, the incessant music track can be a nuisance. The storyline involving agent Dana Walsh may seem unconvincingly contrived. As for Bauer himself! His resilience continues to amaze - he here astonishingly agile despite a savage beating, sadistic torture, two stabbings and at least one bullet.Critics so inclined may well pinpoint these and other possible weaknesses. I am amongst the millions who simply brush them aside, content to sit back and enjoy one of the best television shows ever.Extras include interesting "Scene Makers" about the episodes and an entertaining look back over the previous eight years (eight days actually, when one thinks about it). Understandably emotions are high as filming draws to a close.Kiefer Sutherland has been superb as Jack Bauer, loyal to a fault but remorseless when betrayed - as indeed he is here, a certain death sending him over the edge, he to become a loose cannon bloodily taking revenge. Another great asset throughout the series has been ever-scowling Chloe, she this time round with much more to do.Behind the camera and in front, all concerned deserve praise. They have created one of television's most action-packed shows - the resulting box sets truly a binge-watcher's paradise.

Wonderful!
I've followed 24 since it began, it has been one of the very few things on TV that I wouldn't miss! When Season 8 started, I was wondering how they could possibly top what had gone before. Well, I have to admit that the first hours of Season 8 were a disappointment. It lacked the pace, it was like the writers weren't really interested in it anymore. It also seemed as if budget cuts had seriously limited what they could do.But I stuck with it in the hope that it would improve. It took a while but it certainly did! It appears to have really taken off about the time that it was decided that this would be the final season. The last 10 or so episodes showed 24 at its very best. Jack Bauer kind of "woke up" and the pace, action and excitement accelerated. The last 4 hours in particular were exciting beyond words. It was really anyone's guess as to how they would end it. But when it came to the last hour, well, I have to say that this is without doubt the very best ending to any series that I have ever seen. It had me in tears! It will be sadly missed, although I know a film is planned, it can never be the same. What I loved so much about the whole 24 production is that you never knew what would happen, not for sure. The bad guys got away with it, the good guys suffered, too much sometimes. But the Jack Bauer character was the most remarkable creation of all, a man who stuck to his principals whatever happened to him, he never sold out, he had rare integrity and honour and he simply didn't care how far he went to uphold all this.I highly recommend this as compulsive viewing, TV writing at its very best. I have all the boxed sets of previous seasons and would recommend these highly as well. There are only a handful of TV programs of any kind that I never tire of watching repeatedly, 24 is definitely one of them!

A surprisingly poignant final season
Season 7 was a relative return to form, spoiled from excellence by cartoon villains like Dubaku, the ridiculous White House raid and a disappointing last quarter, but probably due to the continued desire to put the disappointing season 6 behind them, season 8 raises 24 to the greatness of seasons 1,2,3 and 5. Sure there's a bit of rehash which most long term fans will spot but under the format that's really to be expected after eight seasons. The season's last quarter borrows many of season 5's dynamics but Jack's actions take him to a darker place than ever at this point and it is compelling viewing where you genuinely fear for Jack's fate and anybody else who comes near him, and typically there are enough unexpected twists throughout the season to keep you from getting too comfortable. Ultimately I thought that there wasn't a single annoying or tame storyline throughout the season, and I basically liked all of the main characters except Taylor's new Chief of Staff and maybe new CTU boss Hastings, who was more than a little clichéd and over acted.Of course, when you are watching 24 you have to suspend your perception of reality, and in that respect season 8 is little different, but at the same time there is no silly Chappelle-like assassinations by his own men, no crashing of Air Force One, no cougar and no White House raid. Instead, the season's main plot is possibly its simplest and most clear since season one.And as a final selling point, a notorious old foe of Jack's reappears for the final quarter of the season and this character's presence was the cherry on the cake to season 8's most notable feature - unprincipled, opportunistic and self-serving politicians. For the first time in the history of '24-world', the show's producers have provided a more mature and TRULY cynical picture of the sordid corruption which surely dominates politics at the highest level, even if it is maybe exaggerated here for dramatic effect.

Apple Jack
New York City is the backdrop for Jack Bauer's eighth and final very, very bad day. With Mykelti Williamson presiding over the coolest CTU ever, the change of location refreshes the look of the show to great effect. Many old allies and old adversaries return, but there are many new faces too: among them are Anil Kapoor from Slumdog Millionaire [Blu-ray], Freddie Prinze Jr from I Know What You Did Last Summer [Blu-ray] [1997] [US Import] (I imagine I'm the only fan of 24 who saw him in Scooby Doo: Live Action Movie [Blu-ray] [2002][Region Free]!) and Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series [Blu-ray][Region Free]'s space-ace Starbuck. the redoubtable Katee Sackhoff. There's no denying that one or two earlier seasons occasionally went a bit wobbly, but be reassured - the series's final offering is dramatically rock solid. The stunts are still stunning, the twists and turns still startle, the characters still convince and poor old Jack is still put through the emotional wringer. 24 concludes with a reasonable claim to be the most compelling, best crafted thriller ever made for the small screen. The Blu-rays in this collection give us six episodes per disc in 1080p video and DTS HD Master Audio. I noticed one or two nocturnal scenes where the image was slightly grainy, but these added up to only a few seconds over the season's entire eighteen hours and were nowhere near troubling enough to spoil the edge-of-the-seat excitement. I never regretted paying a few pounds extra for the benefit of high-def over DVD.

A Fantastic End To The Series - No Spoilers.
How anyone can write a review of something before the series is finished is beyond me.. give it a chance!I finished watching the very last episode last night, and as a long time fan of 24, I have to say that this series has been incredible and is a very captivating way to end the show.Series 8 has really given us the fair share of heart pounding, adrenaline pumping moments, and very few shows have that much of an impact on you. I'm going to miss watching 24, as I'm sure will many others.Kiefer.. you rock!!

Excellent ending to the series
Since the action moved to a different city it was the right time to finish the series before it turned into CSI or NCIS and like earlier series it started off with a separate main plot and then Jack and his family, as with many other series, were drawn into and mixed up in the action. The difference this time is that there was a series of no-going-back plot twists this time so that any film would have to be a prequel to avoid being too close to the Bourne movies. In addiction level terms it also deliberately doesn't hook you in straight away but by around episode 10, that's when the rollercoaster starts properly - well worth it, but of course the complete box set generally costs around £50 which is the only reason not to buy this box set.

Fantastic
I love all the characters in this series. It's a great series. It's exciting all the time. I Jack Bauer, Bill Buchanan, Chloe O'Brien, Morris, Tony Almeida and Karen. It's such a fantastic series and I know that Kiefer is fed-up of holding a gun now, but it's only make-believe and I wish he would go back to doing 24, even though Chloe is all that is left. They can't have anyone else doing this series because it will not work.

Still excellent, but not the best of the 8 seasons
24 must be one of the best TV thriller series ever created, anywhere in the world (and I believe America does this better than everyone else in the world). I loved every minute of it! Kiefer Sutherland is just a great actor, and I know of nobody that can play Jack Bauer better than him. If you see only one TV-thriller series in your life, that spans several seasons, this is the one!

Why didn't I watch it before?
I just finished watching all 192 episodes of 24. This was a project that took a lot of time but worth it. I am not sure why I missed it when it was on TV but I am glad it is available on DVD and I have been able to watch it on my own time. Likely I would have missed episodes when it was on TV. The series had great and weak seasons. I think season 1 and 8 are great. The 5th is exceptional. They say season 6 was weak. I guess so but you can see they still put a lot into it. I can see the complaints about torture. Some of it is very violent and gruesome. I think the use of chemical torture was really uncomfortable to watch. This also reminds me of how many have been complaining that Zero Dark 30 endorses torture. I don't think it did nor do I think 24 did. But, that is my opinion. What I do think was representable was their suggestion that those who are Muslims or Middle-Eastern are terrorists. They fixed that in the later seasons, especially season 8. In any event I found Kiefer Sutherland to be electrifying throughout every season. His relentless energy and ability to emotionally and physically act at that level is astonishing. He is a great actor. There were many others I greatly admired especially the weird and wonderful Mary Lynn Rajskub. She became a important part of the show. She seemed never comfortable with herself. Her strange expressions were what made her priceless. I guess my regret is that they killed off so many and some in the same seasons. I never got why they did that. Jack had a lot of great, beautiful women but the poor guy could never get a break. Bad things happened to the three that really meant something. I thought of all of them that Annie Wersching as Renee Walker was breathtaking. I also wish to point out that back in 2001 the show had black president. Not just any black president but a commanding Dennis Haysberth in that role. Then in series 7 and 8 they had Cherry Jones as the first female president. I think that is very interesting and significant. Does anybody but me think Cherry Jones looks a little like you-know-who? Well, they say it will come back in a limited series in 2014. What will Jack be up to? Where did he go? Who will be his next female conquest only for the relationship to go wrong? I cannot wait.

A heartfelt "Goodbye" to the Best Show on Television
Through eight seasons, "24" was easily the most riveting show on television; surprisingly quality for the usual mindless fare presented on the "boob" tube. Season eight of "24" holds the excitement and drama that the previous seven seasons were known for. This is and was the best show on TV. Some shows stick around too long, but even in season eight, "24" has twists and turns in the plot that leave your jaw dropping in amazement.Season eight begins with an all new CTU (in New York), with Jack Bauer in quiet retirement. It changes drastically from episode one on! The plot revolves around a terrorist plan to use fuel rods as a weapon on US soil. There is constant intrigue involving the middle eastern country which purchased the fuel rods (the I.R.K.), the Russian sellers, and CTU desperately trying to intercept the transaction and stop deployment of the rods. On the political front, there is intense pressure for the US to sigh a peace treaty with both Russia and the I.R.K. President Allison Taylor faces her greatest moral challenge, and this becomes a major theme of the season. Season eight also brings the surprising return of former disgraced President Charles Logan. His "Nixon-like" character represents the worst of American power, dirty politics, and moral failure. In contrast, the role of CTU analyst Chloe O'Brian represents the best qualities of loyalty, friendship, and intellect. My only criticism of this season is the tendency to turn Jack Bauer into a superhero character. The things he is able to accomplish on his own are simply too much to believe. That aside, this final season of "24" will leave you in tears, as we say goodbye to the best show on television. With the rise of the mindless reality shows on TV, one wonders if the industry has any interest in creating further quality television as exemplified in "24".kone

Saga epica
