Essential German Language Learning Companion
"Learn German For Adult Beginners Book (3 In 1): Complete Course" by Worldwide Nomad serves as an excellent supplemental resource for learning the German language. Having previously used Rosetta Stone for languages like Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and French, I find this book to be a precise and encouraging guide for those eager to learn German. It kicks off with the basics of grammar, providing clear comparisons between German and English, which I found helpful for grasping the subtleties. Each chapter concludes with fill-in-the-blank exercises and multiple-choice questions as a review of what you learned that reinforces your learning. Additionally, the book presents real-life examples and sentences, offering a practical context that is both engaging and beneficial. I especially appreciated the part on German hospitality and cultural insights, which would be helpful when we plan a trip in the future. The book concludes with short stories in German, paired with English translations, aiding in sentence formation and vocabulary expansion. The grammar portion is straightforward, addressing everything from conjunctive tenses to separable verbs, and as expected, it involves some memorization. The phrasebook is practical, addressing everyday scenarios like locating a bathroom or ordering a meal, and includes cultural notes that clarify why certain expressions are used. The short stories are perhaps the most interesting element, providing a touch of historical context that enriches the learning experience. This book is a solid foundation for anyone aiming to learn German, although using audio resources alongside it could greatly improve pronunciation skills and comprehension.

This is great book and my high school German still works!
This book is great - I took high school German for all four years, plus a semester in college a LONG time ago, and I kind of wanted to test myself with this book. It's so easy to learn from and boy do I wish I had something like this book in school. We just had boring textbooks, not like this book which gets to the point fast and really helps you learn. I am still terrible with grammar, however, so I read that section a little more slowly. I loved the inclusion of the short stories to read in the back of the book and entertained those in my household while reading aloud in German while also testing myself on the translation. 5 stars!

Very Technical
For seniors, this is very technical and confusing. Not recommended. Example: Average person wants to learn words they recognize and can utilize. This book jumps right into grammar & how to construct verbally correct sentences without any explanation on how or why. But it does tell you that these rules are not absolute, but this just confuses the student. Then there are the exercises, โ Guess Work for the Beginner โ, and I so far havenโt found any answers to tell me if Iโm right or wrong.

Competent and Dry
Language books are tough. Without the benefit of any kind of audio/visual component, and no way to teach the reader by judging his own creative output (i.e., "writing" in a class context), it's the rare volume that isn't a grammar manual with some vocab thrown in. And that's what this is. Mostly. The 3-in-1 aspect of the book is that it contains the grammar manual, but also a beginning phrasebook, and a few (very) short stories with English translations. The grammar manual addresses what you'd want it to address, and it does so in a straightforward way, but there's no getting around the rote drills required to master the conjunctive tense, separable verbs, or conjugation. The phrasebook, too, has what you'd expect -- finding the bathroom, ordering in a restaurant, asking for help, etc. -- with a few notes about the culture and why certain things are said in certain ways. The third part of the book is the most interesting--the short stories (although I'd characterize them more as short writings, I guess) with English translations. There are some errors that should have been proofed ("Jewish" is repeatedly spelled with a lowercase 'j'), but things are mostly polished. Although dry, I thought the history theme of the chronologically ordered texts was an interesting way to bring a bit of three-dimensionality into the exercise. All in all, this is a solid-enough introduction to the German language. Just don't expect any new ground to be broken. Four of five stars.

Good for Beginners
I got this book as a total beginner in German and I actually liked it more than I expected. Itโs simple and easy to follow, not confusing like other books I tried. I liked that itโs not just grammar, but also phrases and short stories, so you can actually understand and use the language a bit. Itโs nothing complicated, just a solid and practical book to start with.
