A story of how money corrupts the way people look at one another and how it can almost tear a family apart Vinuta marries Girish, a bank clerk, and starts living with his family in Bangalore. She adjusts to her new family well, looking after her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law Gouramma, not taking to heart her mother-in-law's constant picking. But when Girish's elder brother Chandru, who is in the US, decides to get married, Vinuta has to listen to the constant comparisons made between her and Chandru's wife, the 'Dollar Bahu', whose husband earns the valuable dollars that has brought the family its recent affluence. Vinuta slowly loses her peace of mind and health. Then Gouramma decides to visit her US-based son and daughter-in-law. Once there, she sees how liberating life can be, away from the strict norms that govern Indian middle-class life. But she also begins to understand that mere dollars cannot buy the love and respect that she gets as her due back in India. Does Gouramma forge a new relationship with Vinuta and can Vinuta forgive and forget the past? Review: Good read - Simple, good read. Best for non readers. A novel that grips the reader's mind
I give this book four out of five stars because I much enjoyed reading it. I was not disappointed with the subject matter, nor with the writing style. I liked the language. I found continuity of the story throughout. The beginning was good and the story was gripping till the end. However, the conclusion that Dollar spoils a person is misconceived because the story blames the Dollar for the ills among the characters. It is the topsy turvy exchange rates between currencies, which is the real culprit. The value of money within a country is the real value. The exchange rates are artificial and are determined on the basis of marketability of products. Indian Rupee has the same value in India as the Dollar has in America. But the falsely created rate of exchange between the Rupee versus the Dollar ends up raising the value of remittances of money from America to India, and makes the Indian exports cheaper, and the imports costlier. This creates problems in every deal. In fact the expensive Dollar in terms of the Rupee makes it hard for residents of America to spend Dollars in their own country as freely as they would spend its Rupee form in India. While the same product or service could be purchased for less money in India compared to America makes India a better country to live in. This is why the foreigners are charged 2 to 10 times the price for goods and services compared to that Indians pay in India. And the excess left in the amount remitted leads to quarrel among the members of a household that receives it. There are too many other ills due to the artificial exchange rates.

A nice read!!!
In the story, the real difference in one's nature between the reality and the perfect image created by one's imagination is challenged. The book explores how baseless preferences and favoritism cause unnecessary harm and hurt to their own families. The book has been written in a concise yet beautiful manner that conveys in its entirety the meaning of the work. The style of writing is very straightforward and easy to understand. It is a short book. I would describe it as a domestic drama.

Once again Sudha Murthy had done a tremendous job to satiate my reading appetite in "Dollar Bahu".
Once again Sudha Murthy had done a tremendous job to satiate my reading appetite in "Dollar Bahu". I have realised that I can never go wrong with Sudha Murthy's book. Be it my sad mood, be it my learning mood, be it my mood where it is hard to even pick a book-Sudha Murthy stories suits me all time. ๐ฐGrowing up in an indigent milieu, Gouramma is gobsmacked when introduce to the world of " Dollars๐ฒ", as her elder son Chandru gets a promising job in America. What follows post-Chandru departure is the constant comparison between his wife Jamuna, who stays with him in America and Vinita, Gourmamma's younger son's Girish wife. Slogging all day and night between household chores and her job as a school teacher, Vinita still fails to get even a scintilla of appreciation from her mother-in-law. For Gourrama, money is the new, be-all and end-all. ๐ฐThis kind of disparity is not uncommon in our society, where freedom and glory come to those owning big pockets. But is it right to get enamoured by just one side of the world? Money often manifests itself as the impetus behind the personality change of people. Due to this, most of us start to believe that it is forbidden fruit. ๐ฐAlso, many times we think that money is the only key to happiness and forget about all the tiny things that can be our tiny land of sanity. Sudha Murthy through her story has thought us that love and affection can be more valuable than money.
