Calligraphy (A Comprehensive Guide to Beautiful Lettering)

This book is well written and very interesting. One thing this book has also is practice pages. A lot of books I have read have had examples of each type of calligraphy but only a few letters. This book gives you a few letters while in the chapter, but at the end of the book there are practice pages that are the entire alphabet. Was very thankful for that!

Gave as gift to a Chinese Art student staying with us. He loved it and practiced all the time.

It is an excellent book that can let you learn all about calligraphy. It has practice pages, that you can copy and print out, tells you some of the tools that can be used, and a little bit of extra things to make your calligraphy feel extra fancy.

I found the written portion pretentious, so I skipped it. The actual step-by step instructions were easy to follow and I was surprised at how easily I was able to mimic the letters. I used a 3.8 mm Pilot Parallel pen (supposed to be good for beginners) on thick sketchbook paper and it served my purposes just fine. All in all, very pleased with this purchase and excited to practice more.

This is a beautifully put together book with wonderful illustrations and detailed how-to projects which incorporate calligraphy, illuminated letters and origami for perfect gift giving ideas. The author did a great job of combining learning with creativity, I'm pleasantly surprised and will be buying more to give as gifts for Christmas.

This book with another I have are amazing. Gives a brief history, size nib recommended and more. Highly recommend for those starting out to add to start a collection of books of calligraphy.

Exactly what I was looking for in a calligraphy book. Shows examples of famous works and how to make each letter, i.e. strokes and their directions. As someone just starting to get back into this art form, it is perfect for what I wish to accomplish.

I really like this book tho sometimes the arrows directing each stroke aren’t really what you do, at least to me it seems this way. It takes a lot of practice for each character in each font. So make sure you take at least 20 minutes a day to practice.

Shows very well how to get started. Very good value for money!

This book was a present for my 11 year old daughter and she absolutely loves it. Me too.

カリグラフィーの解説書は、日本で欧米でもたくさん出ていますが、クラシックな書体の解説書は品切れになっているのが多いですね。この本も現出版社では品切れとなっていました。本書は2011年フランス語で刊行されて、著者自身の英語訳は2016年で、アマゾンジャパンで購入したものは5刷のようです。著者のホームページにも作例がありました。フランス語のホームページ方が例が多いようです。 私はカリフラフィーの初心者で習った書体も多くないのですが、元々フランス語で書かれたので、英語圏の著書に見られない例があるのが特徴かもしれません。書体は、Uncial, Celtic, Carolingian, Gothic, French Bâtarde, Humanist, Italic, Copperplateです。それぞれの書体ごとに解説と筆順の説明があり、それらを使った装飾した例とカードなどの使用例があります。ガイドラインは水平線はありますが、斜めの線はありません。三戸美奈子「カリグラフィー・ブック増補改訂版」と読み比べて勉強中です。ちなみに呉竹のZIGペンでも本書の例を真似できそうです。

Beautiful historical book. Love this writer but definately not for beginner or even intermediate. " ya gotta be good". The instructions are very clear and the historical info is detailed. Definately for the enthusiastic. Definately a high quality buy . Pages are high quality . I'm very much a beginner so heading for Calligraphy for DUMMIES. May purchase when I get better. IF I get that far. Was just doing gor fun
